“Great Brunch”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 21, 2012

During our stay in Amsterdam, we were looking for a nice place to have a Sunday brunch. After having a couple evening drinks at this place, we decided we liked the old art-deco style and made a reservation. Better reserve because we saw it fully booked after 12:30.
They claim in their ad that this is a Jazz Brunch. OK, live music, nice, but that is not exactly true for jazz.
The room is very large, with high ceilings, art-deco decoration, a lot of brass, If you like it modern and funky, that's not exactly your place. This is an old, traditional restaurant, where many people, but not all, still wear a jacket.
The Prix Fixe brunch is at 37.50 euros. This includes two glasses of Italian sparkling wine and opulent buffet.
To start with, there is Station 1 with all the starters, fish or meat, vegetables, fruits, croissants etc...
Station 2 offers a wide array of entrées.
Station 3 opened much later, with a fantastic choice of desserts.

All in all, this brunch will keep you busy for 2 to 3 hrs. Very good value for the price.
We enjoyed it a lot, and it will be a must for us when we go back to Amsterdam.

“Worth a peak at the decor, but don't eat here”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed May 17, 2012

We had read some fairly positive reviews so were surprised at how poor the meal and the service were at Cafe Americain. The dining room is grand but looks very old and faded, past its prime. The Tiffany light fixtures (which at one point were dimmed to the point of plunging us into darkness) are lovely, but don't compensate for the poor service and meal. I ordered the rack of lamb which arrived with two pieces of lamb the size of a walnut half and the neck of the lamb - yuk. My husband inquired about the fish of the day and was told that it was Dover Sole for 57 Euros!!! Our waitress who seemed to speak English well, couldn't explain how the meals were prepared. After our meal was delivered we didn't see our waitress for nearly 45 minutes, no refills of water, etc. The table next to us was complaining about their burgers being nearly raw, so there are obviously problems in the kitchen as well as the dining room. We were so disappointed with our meals that we didn't feel up for dessert even though I was still hungry. This might be a great spot for afternoon tea, but I wouldn't eat dinner there.

“OPULENT & BREATHTAKING”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 7, 2012

Even if you don't eat here, you have got to see this place. It is off the charts in terms of classy elagance .The indoor cafe is huge and opulent~ dripping with old world charm. Grand Piano, Huge florals, wood & stained glass~ just beautiful!

We had lunch outside overlooking the gorgeous fountains. Onion Soup was quite acceptable and the Club sandwich was very good.

Wait staff a little aloof but very efficient which really added to
the charm of the place.

Would definately return.

“Art Deco at it's finest”

The Cafe Americain is in a fabulous building. The Art Deco decorations are amazing. The food was tasty. The staff were efficient but not overly friendly.
