“Fantastic Service and Stamppot”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 1, 2013

I wanted to try stamppot and read in the guidebooks that this was one of the places to go. I was a little apprehensive given it was a recommended and thought it might be a bit too touristy. I have to say it wasn't.

When we arrived a charming chap showed us to our table; we were then offered drinks by a Scottish lady. She was very friendly and took time to answer our many questions about the food and drinks on offer. She even recommended a very nice beer for my partner to drink.

I had the stamppot with cabbage. It was lovely! There wasn't too much or too little; it was perfect. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

The staff were very friendly and never rushed us, even letting us stay for an extra beer after we finished our food.

“Want fine dining go elsewhere, want good wholesome food this is the place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 31, 2013

We booked our table online two days before we arrived in Amsterdam and were very pleased we did. We booked our table for Friday at 6pm and got a table near the window. It was quite busy when we arrived. I had pea soup with Dutch sausage and bacon and my wife had shrimp croquettes, for main I had game stew with mashed potatoes and veg, my wife had the oven stockpot with fish. Both were piping hot. Good selection of Dutch, Belgian and German beers and a reasonable wine selection.

The decor was great Old Dutch style. By the time we left the place was packed (several rooms with different decor)

We would visit again

“Classic Amsterdam Meal”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2013

We were looking to experience one traditional Dutch meal and looked up a few restaurant menu's from restaurants we found highly rated on Trip Advisor - were very happy with this choice. Enjoyed a hearty meal of soup, sauerkraut mashed potatoes and meatballs with a great beer menu of local selections. Prices were reasonable and food was delicious.
In addition - enjoyed they brought us a wedding drink for good luck on the house from the staff when they heard we were on our honeymoon - super friendly and would definitely go back.

“Great food & atmosphere..”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 27, 2013

First night & first time in Amsterdam (stayed in the Jordaan area) - went to explore Jordaan & Nine Streets areas for somewhere to eat (as recommended by our apartment host) and came across this lovely place - friendly, efficient staff, homely food, well presented, great selection of local beers. Would definitely eat there again!

“A really lucky find”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 26, 2013

We were looking for a restaurant that we had visited on a previous visit to Amsterdam and stubled upon Haesje Claes. What a lucky stumble! Located at the foot of Spuistraat (the end furthest from Central Station) it is a maze of rooms, corridors, steps, nooks and crannies and MUCH bigger inside than the relativey narrow frontage would suggest.

The first night (Yes! Of COURSE we went back!) we started with a pickled herring dish accompanied by red beet, pickles, a sauce and wonderful dark bread. To follow, we had rare veal (Yes, I know. Not everybody approves of veal.) accompanied by veggies, chips and wonderful mashed potato. The veal was perfectly cooked and I never thought I would enthuse over mashed tatties but these were mmmmmmm. A bottle of water and a Penfolds Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz and the whole lot came to 79.80 EUR plus the tip.

The waiter was charming and took time to ask where we were from and tell us a little about the area.

On our last night, we went back! Same starter (difficult to improve on perfection). For our mains, my wife had a confit of duck, reminiscent of many such meals in France and I had the cod - plus of course, the mashed potatoes. Our server, Natalia from Venezuela, gave us more local history, including the fact that Haesje Claes is the given and surname of a lady (1475 - c1544) who founded the Amsterdam Municipal Orphanage not far from the site of the present restaurant that now bears her name.

I recommend that you book. We were lucky the first night but on seeing how busy it was, with locals and tourists in equal mix, we did book for the second occasion and were glad that we did.

When we got home, we rushed to our local deli to recreate the pickled herring and red beet starter and (almost) did. We're still working on it ..............
