“I hope you like coconut...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 17, 2013

Prior to our trip, we heard that Indonesian food was a must while in Amsterdam. Kantjil & de Tijger came recommended, so off we went on our second night in town. A rijstaffel for two seemed a little much, so we both had two of their smaller Rames plates with eight items each. The various items ranged from very good to what-is-this-doing-on-the-plate? -- all of which seemed to be infused or flavored with coconut. The plate was filling with some neat flavors, but not really memorable.

“Excellent good Service needs serious improvement”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 15, 2013

Visited recently this winter, must say the food was excellent but the service was nowhere to compare the food quality. In fact if they do not improve they will have a great food get wasted.

“Didn't live up to my expectations”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 12, 2013

I expected quite a lot of our visit to Kantjil & de Tijger. We tried to have dinner at the restaurant in summer but didn't manage to get in without a reservation. I had already tried Kantjil's food on a canal boat tour a few years ago and I had an Indonesian rijsttafel at a restaurant in Utrecht last year. But it was the first time for my 2 teenagers to try indonesian food. We made a reservation well in advance and we were looking forward to a great dinner experience. The place was packed but we got a very nice table in a corner. We were greeted very friendly and we were asked to order drinks as soon as we sat down. Since we are not experts in Indonesian food, we asked for some explanation of the menu. We opted for the rijsttafel with chicken and fish (Euro 32 per person) and a bottle of the red organic house wine. Barely 15 minutes later the food arrived - all of the food: yellow rice, chicken satays, beef curry, mackerel, eggs, green beans, shrimp satays, pumpkin curry, fried chicken, ... My family loved it. For me, it wasn't what I had expected. The food was only luke warm when it came and as it was not placed on table warmers the food got cold very fast. Also, I had expected to spend at least 1,5 - 2 hours at the restaurant, but we were in and out in about 1 hour. If we return, we might choose different dishes instead of a rijsttafel and have it served as separate courses. The atmosphere in the restaurant is lively and the service is quick and friendly.

“Delicious and lively”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 5, 2013

Friends had recommended Indonesian food as the don't miss cuisine in Amsterdam. Really? Indonesian food? Intrigued, we hunted for restaurants and reviews, but Indonesian is not really a standard filter when searching for food. Still, we came upon a few results, and this place was bright, bold and packed.

Taking it as a good sign, we got a reservation for 30 minutes later and squeezed into a narrow table for two with other tables on each side. While a bit cramped, the food was great. I can't say whether it's traditional or typical since this was our first foray into Indonesian food, but we went with a plate that had a variety of curries and dishes, and it was very tasty. It was around 15 euros for the main dish and 5 euros for a 1/2 bottle of wine. But, most of the menu seems Tapas style where you can order a la carte if you knew what you wanted.

Upon reading other reviews, I can see how this is a touristy place, but we had delicious food and good service that wasn't a far walk from our hotel.

“Best Indonesian in the city”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 4, 2013

I have known Indonesian food is great in Amsterdam. This restaurant holds true to this fact. I recommend the Smoor Babi and the Beef Rendang
