“Outstanding Dining Experience in Amsterdam”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 19, 2013

If you like Japanese food and are in Amsterdam this Restaurant is a must for you. Superbly presented food which was authentic and delicious. The restaurant is kitted out in traditional Japanese style and the staff dressed in costume. Fantastic service.

“quite a memorable experience, at a price”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 13, 2013

It is indeed an outstanding restaurant, in terms of the pursuit for quality, organization. And price. I had a seasonal menu for 115 eur. The meal lasted for 3.5 hrs, meticulously supervised by 5 waiters. The service was very friendly, yet superficially chatty and indeed overly adapted to European taste; one of the waiters had bad breath.
The food was copious, exquisitely served. The quality varied from very good to average, some seafood- and cabbage-rolls had pronounced taste and chlorine-like smell which is indicative of improper preparation or processing and definitely had nothing to do with freshness. The meat dish was very good.
A fine sencha was served free of charge in any amount.
Of important note is that the food did not taste as if it was overly "enriched" with glutamates--a good sign indeed.
Yet throughout the meal I was constantly reminded of the European food identity rather than that of the authentic Japanese one.
My rating for food is 3.5.
It is a good restaurant by the European standards. If the price level is acceptable for you, you are likely to return!

“a real experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 4, 2013

We had one of the best dining experiences ever when we went for sushi here last week. The moment you sit down you're already impressed with the high level of service. The restaurant itself looks very nice and the view over the garden and water makes it a nice setting. The sushi is freshly made for you but you don't have to wait long for it at all. Ms. Inoue .y. explained everything very well and showed us multiple ways in which you can eat the different types of sushi/sashimi/tempura. All of the staff is very good and friendly, but ms. Inoue .y. really made our diner a success and an amazing experience!

“No excellent just because of the price”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 31, 2013

Great restaurant. I love Japanese and this was excellent for a restaurant outside of Japan. Staff were very good and all seemed Japanese. The view over the water and the garden was very pleasant. Maybe a little open for my liking but still very good. I have to say the prices were high and you need to be prepared for that but for Japanese you cant really expect it to be good quality and cheap. I went twice while I was there so cant be bad can it.

“'... one expects more from its pedigree"”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2013

In actuality we'd give this place 3-and-a -half, but definitely not a 4, because quite honestly a lot of items we ate that night, were 'disappointingly bland' ......
Going for the 'seasonal' menu (€115 excluding drink), as many items 'hit' (mackerel sushi, bream sashimi, quail) as 'missed' (steamed soup, tempura, squid) whilst service between courses was 'excruciatingly slow' as the restaurant was 'pretty full' ...
even the 'amuse' flopped - what was described as 'watercress' was in fact chinese 'tanghow' leaves , inadequately seasoned... 'fish soup served in teapot' was lacking in flavour, pumpkin tempura hard and flat, kingcrab lotusroot lacked flavour, enzovoort ...
With so many 'little dishes, one hoped for many 'mouthfuls of delight', which at the end failed to materialise ...
Certainly no fault on the waitresses - charming and helpful - while the ambiance -- well, the back room is bland and 'flatly lit' so that it hardly reflects the usual charm of an 'elegant japanese restaurant' ...
Having eaten in 'proper Japanese restaurants' from Paris to Melbourne, I have to say this one 'disappointed' , especially when a 'michelin star' is involved .... one expects rather more innovation and taste than what one got..
