“Great price for the location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 26, 2014

As a college-aged couple, we spent two nights in Amsterdam. The location of the hotel is definitely the biggest asset: every major attraction that you can think of is within a 20 minute walk of the hotel. A tram stop on the 1-2-5 route is no more than a two minute walk from the hotel, too. Based on what I was looking at the time of my booking, and what I experienced in the city, I can't imagine a more affordable hotel based on the location you are getting. The room that we had was a little small, but comfortable and quiet. Our room didn't get cleaned since we were there for only two nights, other than getting new towels dropped off. Breakfast was very good and had plenty of options. The men at the front desk were also extremely friendly and helpful in terms of providing information about getting around, free attractions, and allowing us to print tickets off. There are also a couple of cats that room the breakfast area and lobby, so it was a very nice, cozy feel.

I am fussy! Very clean room and spotless bathroom. Super double bed. Adjustable heating.
Breakfast was simple and plentiful. The room was not very large but perfectly adequate.
Now for the staff - this was where the standard was well above the usual level. The housekeeping was super in rooms and breakfast area. The reception managers were absolutely superb and helpful and on a Sunday found me a doctor in a hospital clinic to attend, and organised the taxi to get us there. Brilliant.
The location was very good and there was a little guest noise as usual from younger people but very peaceful after about 11.30pm(This is Amsterdam after all!) Would revisit.

Please treat this as a hostel not a hotel.

We stayed for 3 nights on a city break. This hotel is definitely more suited to stag parties and the like. You can hear every coming and going in the room (shouting, running, doors slamming), really is not easy to sleep.

Room smells like it has just been painted, so relatively clean. Holes in the sheets, safe not working, bed is very uncomfortable (springs are broken in middle).

Breakfast could be served for longer period (currently 8-9:30 exactly).

Best thing is location.

The best we can mention is that the hotel was very well located in the heart of Amsterdam and the breakfast service was ok but too short, only from 8 to 9:30. The room we got was in the basement, with a freezing bathroom that had no warming system and extremely small. The bed was awful, with a sagging mattress. On top of that, we had no remote control for the TV because "previous guests" had taken them (that was the explanation we got). So, we had to change channels the old way! Housekeeping was at 6 or 8 p.m., not before, and it meant replacing the towels and emptying the trash cans. The bed was never made during my three-night stay. I could call it a dump. I paid the same rate for a hotel in Florence and the results were dramatically different. I would only recommend it to young people who are more interested in partying than in comfort.

We booked the Downtown Hotel as we found a good deal and after reading a few reviews on here we weren't expecting much. The instructions to the hotel from Central Station were very clear and one of it's best features was the fact that it was very close to a tram station. The area surrounding the hotel was nice and quiet. When arriving (quite late at night after a late flight) we were warmly welcomed by the man on reception who was extremely helpful throughout our stay. He had a great knowledge of the surrounding area and could answer all of our questions - an asset to the hotel. All the receptionists we dealt with were polite and helpful. Our room was fantastic (considering the money we paid, we weren't expecting such a nice room) and clean. The free wifi 24/7 was great to keep in contact with family and friends back home, the television had a range of channels and all in all it was just what we needed. Breakfast was good however didn't suit us as we aren't used to continental! The house cats were lovely and made it feel like I was at home. There was a range of information leaflets at reception as well as many discounts for many main attractions. Only downside was where our room was situated - it was right on the stairs so were heard everything on the stairs as well as from above but it was to be expected. We will definitely be back to Amsterdam and when we do we will not even think about booking anywhere but here!
