“Ruuuuun!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed January 9, 2013

This hostel is not a good deal! First, we had to wait 2 hours to have our room. After 2 hours the guy told us that the room we booked (8 bedroom) was not free so we have to sleep separately or the some matress on the floor... But we paid for the 8 bedroom...
The bathroom is the worst I have ever seen! It was very very dirty! And the floor of the room too. I dont know if they clean the bathroom!
Then in the middle of the nights some guys were screaming (I think it was the guys working there and some other guys).
At the end, there was a problem with the deposit you give for the key (10 euros)...

So please dont go there!

Arriving at the hotel was pretty easy and simple, the chap at the desk was helpful and nice, but that's where the plesantries finish. On the second night of our stay we were awaken too what we believe too be 5 turkish or middle eastern men demanding we pay for room damage, smoking in the room and for assaulting and scarying off the four cypriot women who were sharing the room with us. So €250 and a new hotel later, we got the cops envolved who were able too tell us that the women were still in our room and had no idea what was going on or why we had left. The management then changed their accusations against us too a damaged sink and wall, which the police were able to confirm was false. All in all please do not stay at this hotel as something is seriously wrong with the managment in control there.

The cantankerous old goat at the desk honestly turned a good weekend into a bad one. This guy would have trouble using the toilet on his own never mind running a hostel. It took him 25-30 minutes to type three names and addresses in the computer. I honestly thought he was winding us up at one stage. He insisted that i had booked for 3 nights even though i was only staying for two. I argued with him for well over a half an hour until i logged on to my email and showed him the dates for the booking. Instead of apologising he starts cursing at me in Arabic and waving us out of the reception area. I could not believe how rude he was. Got to the bedrooms after 1 hour and 30 minutes on top off several hours looking for the place.

they made us sleep for one night and almost two days until they switched on the heater. and evry time we said "it´s not working" they told us "go up! it is working now. i just switched it on"
very small an dirty...it´s defenetly not worth the money they took from us. if there is no other oppurtunity, then just sleep unter the bridge. it´s much better

We arrived at the Amigo Hotel and had to leave and go stay somewhere else. Upon first arriving you are greeted by some stairs that are literally vertical like a ladder (thank goodness we left our luggage at the train station) - all the stairs are like this and the hotel has many floors. We are fairly young (30's) and fit and we had serious problems getting up them! The guy at the front desk was very nice and tried to be accomodating, but he was the only nice thing about this place. The whole place reeked of smoke (of all kinds) and looked very dirty. When we got to the room (we had booked a four-bed room with a private bath) we weren't expecting too much but on seeing the bathroom decided we had to leave - it was miniscule with no separate shower - the shower head stuck out into the area in front of the toilet - so where you walked with your street shoes and went to the bathroom was basically the floor of the shower - yuck. Oh, and then the toilet wouldn't flush.

The location is actually really good, with some nice restaurants and bars right around the corner. And we are not picky - we had stayed in hostels all over Europe on our three week trip, but draw the line at dirty, smoky and dangerous (those stairs really could kill you, and I hate to think about what would happen if there was a fire there!)

It was really our fault for not researching the place more - but we do want to warn people NOT to stay here unless you are a bunch of guys who are 18 years old and just want to sit around and do drugs the whole time you are in Amsterdam!

The location of the hotel is nice; accross Artis and near public transport.
But the staff was not friendly, came knocking on our door during the night (???) and was not willing to give us towels. The room was dirty and there were holes in the curtains. The television did not work. The shower was so dirty that we didn't use it. Finally the breakfast was nothing and the second day we want to the bakery accross the street.
