“a nice kindergarten hostel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 15, 2008

We were sent there by St. Christopher's at the Winston. The hostel is more hotel-like, very big and brand new. We had a private room for a reasonable price (32 euros per person). Very clean, great bathroom, nicedecoration, very kind and helpful staff but a little far away from the centre (10-15' by bus or taxi) but there's a night bus and bus stop is very near to the hostel. Warning: it reminded us of a place that schools stay in-LOTS OF CHILDREN. So it wasn't what we expected of a "young travllers' "hostel. Apart from that, it was very nice. Also big breakfast included. What we also found helpful were the big lockers that you can rent per day.

  • Liked — veeey clean and new
  • Disliked — far from the center, "school-hotel"-atmosphere

Good points: The stayokay is massive and obviously caters for very big groups. It has large shared rooms with comfy beds and there is a light above each bed. Breakfast is included and there is a huge selection. Most importantly it's clean. Not so good points: While there are lockers they are located on the ground floor which is really inconvienent. There is only 1 power point in a 7 bed dorm which is realy annoying when everyone wants to recharge their phone/MP3/camera. The location is not great but easy enough to get into town by bus or tram. This could be a bit of a hassel for those wanting to go out at night. Most frustrating is the internet which is rediculously slow. All that said I was happy enough.

I've stayed in the Stayokay Zeeburg for 5 nights in August 2008.

The Hostel is located a little bit outside of the centrum, but it is easy to reach by tram No. 14. It takes you about 10-15 minutes to the city center.

I've asked the reception, if there is somewhere a supermarket in the surrounding. The woman at the reception desk gave me a map of the neighbourhood, where the tramstation, a supermarket etc. was drawn in. This was very helpful.

In my room were 6 beds. 4 beds downstairs and 2 beds upstairs. I think the rooms are ok, just for sleeping. There was a small table and 2 chairs in it. The toilet, the shower and the beds were quite clean. The bed linen was packed in plastic, but the blanket and the pillow were dirty.

The hostel offered a fair breakfast. 3 kinds of toast, croissants, honey, jam, Nutella, ham, cheese, cereals, coffee, juice...

The hostel is open for 24 hours, and you get a key card for your room when you check-in.

A further thing i have to citicise is, that there were no lockers in the dormitory rooms. There were some in the entrance hall, but there you have to pay € 2,00 for the whole day, to lock something in it, and there aren't enough for everyone.

I think I can recommend this hostel, because in overall it was really okay!!

I went on a tour with efcollegebreak and they booked this place for us. I really loved this place and Amsterdam. The staff was really friendly to me. They all spoke English which was great. They have internet but it is a bit expensive. The guy at the front desk told me not to tell the other guests but told me where a cheap internet cafe is and it was cheap indeed and also very close. As you walk out of the stayokay you just go straight and it will be on the right side, there is also one at the first road you come to you take a left and there are two across from each other. The stayokay is new so it is nice. I stayed in a 6 person room. We were not there much so it wasnt much of a problem. It was 3 sets of bunk beds and only one shower and toilet. The breakfast was not my favorite but atleast you get something. The location is not too bad. It isnt that far from the bus stop which is really easy to get around on. Its nice there and I felt safe to walk around at night. They do also have a bar in it and all kinds of other stuff to do there. Feel free to contact me.

I only have one thing to say and that is BEDBUGS!! Ugly, horrible, nasty little bedbugs. Luckily, I always check my mattress and the actual bed before I sleep and I was able to spot the little things right off the bat. My friend who had stayed the previous night was not so lucky and awoke to horrible little red bites all over his body. ABOSUTELY DISGUSTING! Bedbugs are hard to get rid of and not only that, but you can easily carry them home. I also found the staff to be extremely ill tempered. I did find the building to be okay compared to other things that I have heard about the Stayokay Zeeburg....however bedbugs and rude staff have made sure that I will never go back to this hostel.

Hallo! I stayed in this hostel at the begining of february 2008. In one of the last nights, the night guard came in to the room and stoled one photo camera (canon 300d), an tripod foto camera, one baterry grip and some other few things. In total, the Stayokay Zeeburg night guard stoled aprox 700 Euro in objects. obvious, I informed the Police and hostel management.
The stayokay manager show me one tab with all the entries in the same wing with my room, and, except me, the only person who entered that winh in the period of rubbery was the Stayokay night guard. Even the manager told me that he is sure that the rubbery was commited by the night guard, but he can't do anything, because he has no other prove except that tab with all the entries in that wing of the building.

I stayed here in Oct '07. I think it had just opened and there was still a lot of work being done on the place - staff not really ready. They were hiring out the dining/bar area for some sort of exhibition - which led to a clash of dressed up people at the bar and some backpackers in pyjamas (they had something stollen from their room and they were all talking to reception).

There was a constant droning of air conditioning towers all the time (we were in a dorm on the top floor). And you woke up and came out of bed to look across at office workers in the building across the courtyard. Strange. Not in town but not that far by taxi or tram. It may improve.

  • Liked — Its newness and uniqueness of being an old school house
  • Disliked — Strange organisation/service but it may improve
