“Stay somewhere else...”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 12, 2014

We stayed here for 3 nights at the end of our trip. We'd previously stayed in hostels and camping in tents. This was by far the worst place we stayed at and cost around twice the price of any hostel we stayed at.
The room by first appearance was clean, but with further inspection you can see it is not that clean. As mentioned in other reviews the steep climb to the upper floors with heavy luggage is a bit ridiculous.

My girlfriend also got really bad bed bug bites due to the sheets/linen in the hotel, which required her going to the doctor and getting medication for.

This place is central, which is about all it has going for it. Other than that, I found this to be a very terrible and overpriced hotel that was worse than any budget hostel we stayed in.

Stay somewhere else.

Me and my girlfriend were Interrailing, and in our haste to book accommodation in Amsterdam we made a last minute booking at the Damrak Inn with it's central location being the key attraction. We were given Room 51 on the top floor, which seemed reasonably nice despite the awkward climb up to it through the narrow stairway. We settled down for bed and the nightmare began. I was awoken at 4.30am to an unusual rustling sound from several areas of the room. It soon became clear that multiple mice were present when we saw them scuttling over our bags. We immediately left the room and complained at reception and the chap placed us in another room for the remainder of the night and ensured the room would be cleaned and examined. We went out and explored Amsterdam the following day and on our return to the hotel we were informed that the room had been checked, cleaned and de-miced. However, on inspection of the room several mice droppings remained on the floor. Despite this, we settled down to sleep and within minutes we heard the scratching of mice from within the walls in several corners of the room. We tried to ignore it, but soon enough they were out among our bags and belongings again. We immediately packed our things and headed for the reception. In response to our demands to be re-roomed, we were told that the hotel was full and that if we wanted to stay we would have to spend the night in a shared dorm. Having spent €193 on our booking for 2 nights in a private room, I found this unacceptable and requested to speak to the manager who, rather predictably, wasn't there. I asked for a refund for our night's stay which was also refused so at 12.15am we walked out of the hotel and went to a nice Mecure hotel which didn't have mice! Avoid this place at all costs!

booked & paid with expedia, arrived mid afternoon to be told no rooms available & to " go try elsewhere " . Hotel was Very noisy , seems to be opposite a building site , didn't look too clean either , blessing in disguise maybe. Expedia have been no help what so ever .

Room Tip: Don't stay , not nice people.

This hotel has mice. They said to us don't take any good in the room. However my friend took a diet supplement which was vacuum stored powder shake in a bag in his case. During my last night at around half 4 I awoke to a mouse running across the room and holes in the shake bag. The friend and I went down to confront the receptionist and he decided to blame this incident on us. I do not advise staying here....

*Do not trust this hotel* We got to the hotel to be told that they had cancelled our booking and given our room to someone else because the price we were quoted on hostelworld was wrong. They told me that an e-mail had been sent to inform me, i later found out that it was sent the evening before we flew out. They had taken it upon themselves to book us into a new hotel at a much higher price than we had agreed to pay at damrak. Asked for deposit back but tehy said its nothing to do with them

Room Tip: Do not stay here

The access to the rooms in the building was extremely difficult. Many steep stairs that were not even straight up. With heavy bags it was really a problem. The evening sleeping was not very good as there are doors in the hallways that the other guest were shutting all night. If you opened your window to get some cool air, we heard men talking like they were in our room with us. Not a good night sleep after a 20 hour trip from the US.
