“Fabulous suite in an old townhouse”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 24, 2010

Stayed here for one night in November but wish it could have been longer. Grand suite on top floor was spacious and tastefully decorated. Great, sociable breakfast in the kitchen. Good central location and only a short walk to the galleries or city centre. Alex and Sharmila were extremely helpful and friendly.

Stayed on the first leg of our Honeymoon and it was a great place to start off! Fusion Suites has beautiful rooms, the bathroom was pristine with a lovely free-standing bath and we appreciated the refrigerator full of wine and beer. Alex and Sharmilla provide first-class hospitality, service and personal attention. Couldn't recommend a stay here enough to anyone visiting Amsterdam.

Our 1st European trip was taken in April to celebrate a special anniversary and birthday. We started in Amsterdam and upon Trip Advisor's recommendations, chose to stay at Fusion Suites Number40. Every complimentary review describing the attentiveness of the owners Sharmilla and Alex, pale in comparision to the care we received from them during our stay. Yes, our suite was roomy, clean and comfortable with a lovely bathroom to match. We had champagne waiting for us in our room which was decorated with lovely fresh orchids, as others have mentioned. The location was near the museums, best shopping area and within walking distance to tour buses and canal boats. All those things were great but the charm of this small bed and breakfast hotel is truly the owners. Breakfasts were expertly made by Sharmilla and eaten in her lovely, large kitchen where we got to talk over our plans for the day. Alex and Sharmilla's suggestions helped us see the best of Amsterdam and they even made it possible for us to visit the small town where my mother was born. We can never thank them enough for the many kindnesses they extended to us during our visit and we look forward to seeing them again.

Our journey had a breakpoint with all BA flights being cancelled from London to Amsterdam. So instead of reaching on 18th, we reached on 19th Dec 09. When we reached we were upgraded to the Grand Suite and were made to feel most comfortable. Our hosts - Alex and Sharmila were right there and took us through the house and amenities available. The daily breakfast was ofcourse the best start to a day. Mostly we felt like we were meeting friends in a place where we had none. The description of Fusion Suites is exactly as described by all reviewers. If you plan to blend in to amsterdam, there is no better place to start than Fusion Suites

We thoroughly enjoyed our trip in Amsterdam staying in the Grand Suite at Fusion Suites. Alex and Sharmila made us feel welcome, our room was tastefully decorated with a very comfortable bed and bathroom. Breakfasts were home made and delicious and the free wireless internet access was very useful. The building was impressive and the location of Fusion Suites just a ten minute walk from the museums and shops etc was ideal!

My expectations for my stay at Fusion Suites were very high after reading the reviews on Tripadvisor and, I have to admit, I was a bit disappointed. Don't get me wrong; it's a very nice bed and breakfast but, in my opinion, the reviews overstate its attributes.

On the positive side, the old townhouse is charming and in a good location. Alex and Sharmila greeted us at the door when we arrived and, throughout our stay, Alex asked if we needed anything. The breakfast that Alex prepared each morning was delicious: hot pancakes, eggs, cheeses, breads all wonderful. The classic suite was homey and the adjoining bathroom was large and attractive. It was wonderful having free internet access in the room and there were some nice touches like fresh flowers, refrigerator with complementary bottle of wine, water, etc.

On the not-so-positive side, if you're expecting a first-class hotel, Fusion Suites is not for you. It's a very nice bed and breakfast. There is no lobby or sitting room for guests to use outside of their own suite. In fact, the room where you check in has a reception desk and a set-up for a beauty salon (which, we were told, is Sharmila's side business); I though it was a bit odd to see a chair, sink and other salon equipment in the main room, and it certainly detracted from the first-class image they are attempting to portray. There is no guest dining room; breakfast is served in their small, attractive kitchen at a table for six guests about a meter away from the stove. Our classic suite was not really a suite, but a good-sized bedroom with a small sofa, ottoman, and coffee table. The room was well-insulated from street noise, but the interior walls are paper-thin, so guests talking in the hallway sounded as if they were in your room. The claw foot tub in the bathroom was charming, but getting in and out of it to shower was an awkward and slippery adventure; I wondered how an older or physically limited guest would deal with this.

Two particular things bothered me, although they are not major. First, as I mentioned, Fusion Suites offers complementary wine, beer, water, etc. that can be found in the in-room refrigerator, which is a nice touch. The problem is that, once you use something, it is not replaced. We drank a bottle of white wine our first night and did not see another; we bought our own bottle the second night. For the rate they charge, I thought this was a bit stingy.

Second, part of what Fusion Suites is selling is first-class hospitality and personal attention; contrary to the majority of the reviews, I thought they fell short. Yes, throughout our stay, Alex asked if we needed anything. However, at breakfast, the time that B&B owners usually connect with their guests, Alex was more concerned about completing breakfast service than chatting with us and the other guests. We attempted to engage him, but didn't get too far. After our arrival, we never saw Sharmila again. At breakfast each morning, we were told she was wasn't up yet. In my opinion, if you're in the B&B business, you don't have the luxury of sleeping late when you have guests in your home. I think they missed the boat; instead of feeling special and welcomed, we felt the opposite. It would have been a good opportunity to learn about Amsterdam and their experiences living there. I recognize that this is contrary to most of the reviews, but this was our experience.

In the end, I would recommend Fusion Suites so long as you know what it is and are willing to pay the price. I think it's expensive for what you get. To be honest, for my next visit to Amsterdam, I will try to find a hotel that is a better value.

We stayed 2 nights, had rooms 1 and 2. We were traveling with 3 small children and a grandparent. The rooms are large and beautifully appointed. Alex and Sharmilla take great care in providing a quiet, but luxurious setting. Our arrival was very early, but the room was ready and this was very welcomed after an overnight flight with a 7, 6 and 3 year old child. Alex got us quickly registered and we were able to take a morning nap to get over the jetlag. He kindly recommended restaurants and local bike rental. Breakfast was fresh eggs, pancakes, Dutch cheese, fruit, and ham. Everything was made to order. The beds, linens, and decor are of the highest quality. Even the rollaway beds for the children were very comfortable. We appreciated the refrigerator full of juice for the children and wine and beer for the adults. I would absolutely recommend this to anyone visiting Amsterdam. I plan on returning one day, too!
