“Fun in Amsterdam”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 31, 2014

This is a beautiful apartment in an ideal location around the corner from the Rijksmuseum. It is in a charming alley and I definitely plan on going back. The information provided prior to our visit by Martin was very helpful. It easily explained everything I needed to know to navigate the wonderful city of Amsterdam. This was my first trip to Europe and this apartment was my favorite hotel of the visit. The Holland people are very welcoming and it is an exceptional place to visit.

Really nice apartment in a decent location, 20 mins or so from the centre and close to the museums and vondelpark. Apartment was very clean, warm, comfy bed, coffee etc provided. Really nice touch having it's own little outside space (very small but still!).

Martin was exceptionally helpful and funny, advising places to go and what to expect. Amazingly managed to clock that my partner was into horses and recommended going to the hollandsche manege to stroke a few massive horses. Unfortunately we were there just before a big exhibition.

Only negatives would be that the double bed was actually two singles pushed together so you have the little crack down the middle, and that there was quite a lot of noise from above - only footsteps mind.

Room Tip: We were in the basement and it was a little noisy above so may be better to have an apartment on one...

We enjoyed our stay at Kien B&B very much. It was clean, modern, well cared for. The beds were comfortable, the kitchen had all the necessities, and we were given clean towels every day. We did not take the breakfast option, but Martin showed us on the map where all the local supermarkets are. He was very helpful, and even let us leave our luggage in the apartment until our evening flight, since nobody was checking in that day. We were there in August, in the middle of tourist season, but did not hear any of the noise that some of the other reviewers complained about. It's a great location - close to the tram, museums, Heineken Experience - yet on a quiet, residential side street. We had a ground floor studio, with a little garden in the back.

My wife and my recent visit to Amsterdam was made all the more memorable by our stay at Kien.
We found the place easily thanks to the clear instructions we were sent, and were suprised to find it located in the centre of Asmeterdam but quietly tucked away in a quiet, picturesque neighbourhood. There we were greeted by the charming owners who I must say were very helpful and did everything they could to make us feel comfortable and welcome.

The name Bed & Breakfast doesn't do the place justice. What we got was a fresh, clean and modern studio apartment. The kitchen had a stove and dishwasher, and the breakfast was already provided for us to prepare when we wanted. We were also pleased that the owners were happy to cater for my wife's lactose intolorance, something we've found problematic at other establishments throughout our travels.

The location was perfect, with everything's just a stone's throw away. Our room was looked into everyday while we were out enjoying the city, with clean towels provided and breakfast supplied. All in all, we couldn't have hoped for better service and value for money, which (we know can be somewhat of a rarity in Amsterdam). The owners were wonderful (we even enjoyed a tipple with them on our last night!), the studio was clean and spacious and had everyhting we needed. Full Marks!

Although listed as a Bed and Breakfast, I think it should be classified more as an apartment, with or without the optional food. The apartment was very clean and up to date. Comfortable bed, and kitchen with all the necessary appliances to make your own breakfast, lunch, or dinner. The location is great, within 2-3 blocks of hundreds of restaurants, just west of the apartment. Also 10 minute walk to the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum. The streetcar stop is just a 2-4 minute walk.

Interestingly, there is a small dining table/room at the front of the apartment which we never used. I think a small sitting area would have been more useful for us. Shower and toilet are within the apartment and very clean. Caretakers would make the bed daily, and bring fresh bread, pastries, fruit, eggs, prosciutto, and cheese. The refrigerator was stocked with Heineken, juices, and milk. We couldn't ask for much more. It costs 20 euros more for the food option, and I think this was worth the convenience.

My wife and I stayed at Kien for a couple of nights at the end of a cycling tour. We were delighted to have a bright, comfortable place to stay that was so close to Museumplein. Though centrally located, the street is quiet and friendly with many children playing and families going about their lives. The apartments are very close to Albert Heijn and an organic grocery and we enjoyed making dinner in the full kitchen. Towels were replaced daily, and the bed was made every afternoon. Martin and Joyce were accommodating of our last-minute reservation request, and even let us delay our check-out because they didn't have any new guests coming in until the following day.

As others have noted, a pair of ear plugs may be useful. We overheard a bit more of the upstairs guests' comings and goings than we would have liked. However, the location, amenities of a studio apartment (with dining room!) and reasonable price make Kien an excellent value for Amsterdam.

This is the third time we have stayed at Kien and we have stayed in 3 different studios. Each one has a slightly different décor which keeps things interesting. Martin ( and Joyce) cannot do enough. They ensure that your stay is as comfortable as possible. There was a very small amount of noise when we stayed but it's a small cost to pay when you are staying in such a nice area, in such nice surroundings with such wonderful hosts.
The studios are very centrally placed and have good access to travel around Amsterdam.
We won't stay anywhere else when we go to Amsterdam!

Room Tip: All studios are great!
