The flavors of Amsterdam abound at the Saturday Noordmarkt. Smells of fresh bread, raw milk cheese, cured meats and charcuterie, pastries, and honey waft through the air; much more intoxicating for the foodie traveler than the smell of pot that permeates the Red Light District. We arrived in time for lunch and were overwhelmed at the choices of handcrafted, local foods, made with love by the beautiful Dutch men and women working the stands. Everyone was very helpful as we purchased the makings of a picnic lunch, their English skills better than those working many farmers market stands in the US. Our simple lunch of crispy artisan bread, goat cheese spread, Gouda, sausage, liverwurst, and chocolate was award worthy. We found a park bench nearby, enjoyed our Noordmarkt goodies, and watched couples and families go about their Saturday routines. If you are lucky enough to spend a Saturday in Amsterdam, make sure lunch at the Noordmarkt is on your itinerary.
