“If you'd like a Dutch experience in Amsterdam, stay here.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2009

On the other hand, if you require all of the New World conveniences of an American hotel, you're better off someplace else. I booked a weekend at The Golden Bear at the last minute, when my Dutch friend became seriously ill and unable to host me at his flat. The bed was comfortable, the room was clean, and the decor was cheerful.

I've read the complaints about the stairs, and find them laughable. Anybody who has spent any amount of time in Amsterdam homes and canal buildings understands that steep stairs are a way of life. Ditto on the breakfast: it's a Dutch breakfast. If you want an English breakfast, there are plenty to be found in England. If you need an American breakfast, stay at the Mariott.

The Golden Bear is a well-located,hospitable establishment run by courteous staff.

My partner and I traveled to Amsterdam last August to attend the festival which went on for a week. We stayed at the very old and quaint Golden Bear Hotel, a gay hotel, and we were treated like one of the family. The staff and the owners couldn't do enough for us. The room was cleaned everyday and overlooked the street and the breakfast was cooked as we waited in the delightful dining room. I wasn't used to the old style staircases but soon mastered it and it became a joke with us as we climbed the stairs each night. The staff were very helpful with directions to locations and the information they had in their office was ample for our trip.

The GOLDEN BEAR a great place to stay for the gay crowd.

This is a great local hotel, great location, historical building, sadly a vanishing breed. We have stayed at the Golden Bear for 30 nights over the years, and every guest we talked to liked it, and there are many repeat guests. This is Amsterdam, not Miami Beach or Club Med, so everything is unquely Dutch. The spiral stairs are typical of these old houses, and the staff will help you with your luggage if you are not sure how to get it up the stairs.. The rooms are small and neat, typical of the Netherlands, and were very well cleaned, daily. When booking, ask if your room will have a bath or is it down the hall. The staff is multinational, unique, and thoughtful, with lots of suggestions for clubs and touring. The cozy (gezellig) breakfastroom enables you to meet other guests easily. The breakfast is typical Dutch --- breads, cheese, meats, and orange juice, coffee, and tea. The owner, Theo, is readily available if you have special requests. If you want American space and facilites, or want to be waited on hand-and-foot, this is perhaps not for you. If you want a small and cozy B&B, the Golden Bear fills the bill and is ideally located on a quiet side street near busy Leidseplein. It's our home away from home in Amsterdam.

This is a simple hotel - the rooms are fairly large and the entire place is very clean. The staff is friendly and you get to meet others staying at the hotel during the breakfast (which is nothing special -- just nice). The hotel is very centrally located and near gay bars and the gay sauna. The "coffee" shop next door, The Dolphins, is lovely. The hotel is also near shops and restaurants and all tourist attractions. There is a great market 1/2 a block from the hotel that sells fresh fruit, cheese, sandwiches, wine, etc. If you aren't looking for anything super-fancy, this is the hotel for you. We have stayed here twice and look forward to coming back to The Golden Bear again!

Good location and that is really the only postive attritube that can be attached to this hotel.
Frst the stairs are very difficult to climb regardless of age, the room was small, badly designed, poorly ventilated and smelled of what apperared to be dampness, the room was cleaned regularly and coffee and tea refilled and the towells were changed also.
The major issue was with the attitiude of the staff,, frankly from reading the previous reviews i am astounded that the staff are labelled friendly. This hotel is not the cheapest and as well travelled man customer service and politeness goes a long way. The management are cold and very abrupt, a smile helps and yes its nice to be important but it is more important to be nice!! especially to guests who are paying a high price. The breakfast was very basic and the same ham, cheese and rye bread rolled out each morning in a very unpleasant atmosphere. I would not reccomend this hotel for value for money, good accomodation or friendly service after all in this global recession hotels should trying to excell themselves as it seems this hotel which is really a guesthouse stopped trying a long time ago

Stayed 3 x nights, had a single ( queen sized bed ), clean & cosy, at side, view of back gardens quiet enough, although it was a cold weekend in Amsterdam, room was ok, bit chilly in the night, breakfast simple, coffee / bread / ham / cheese / juice, briefly saw other guests in passing, as they finished their breakfast, I think it was a quiet time as they offered me another room at additional cost, staff polite, been many times to AMS so didn't need to ask them anything, location good, I'm sure you can find better hotels for the same price ...

Just returned from a 3 day break at the Golden Bear and would say that I would give it a bit of a so so rating really.
Good things - location makes walking to all major points of interests a maximum of a twenty minute walk away, the staff who are friendly enough.
So so things - room (top floor rear) was clean, shower reasonable power, good TV and DVD with good selection of channels.
Bad things - the breakfast is a real let down (no cereal, fruit, or even fresh milk) just toast and ham and cheese with coffee and orange juice.*There is a great coffee/snack shop around the corner giving great muffins and snacks at a reasonable price so go there instead*, the price (over £100 pn for a Sunday to Tuesday night seems a bit steep in November but Amsterdam is an expensive city for hotels).

Overall though the location will be the main selling point of this hotel (although if I stay here again I will not be taking a big suitcase as the stairs make getting it up a strain and getting it down if you are on our own terrifying).
