“Nice Hotel Central Location.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 27, 2009

Hotel Decor is cool, fabulous building really loved the interior very impressive architecture while old style clean and fresh. Now for the downfall, felt the reception was very unwelcoming.. the reception is in a room off the main lobby, I was standng at the porter desk for a min or two.. before I realised, while the very aloof receptions sat at their desks, I thought it was the accountants office or something until I poked my noise in. I dealt with a few laddies in reception none of them made me feel welcomed.. very aloof, very of annoying.
BTW avoid the room service pizza- worse ever. But if you can get over that.. its a lovely 5 star hotel. Hopefully the hotel management will read this review and teach there lady receptionists to lighten up and smile and take that frozen crap pizza off the room service menu.

I would have loved to stay at this hotel but they rang me the day before I was due to travel to say they did not have a room for me, although they had e mailed me to confirm in December. They offered me another hotel which they said was 5 star and said I could have the complimentary mini bar. I queried price and was told it would be the same. I agreed because I was at work and worried about having nowhere to stay. When I got home I didn't like the hotel they had offered and the price quoted was more than 70 euros extra. I cancelled the hotel and made other arrangements. I was very annoyed about being 'bumped' I had made the booking over two months before and to be cancelled the day before was very bad management, the alternative hotel did not have a pool so it was not 'like for like'. All in all for a hotel that supposedly prides itself on customer service I was definately short changed.

We are just back from the Dam and stayed in the Grand Amrath Hotel. It was absolutly amazing. There was a doorman for starters who was really polite and showed us to our room whilst giving us a quick demo on the hotel which was very useful and impressive.

The room was huge, with a free mini bar with a great choice! Also the bed was really comfi you would lie there all day :) The bathroom everything was top class!

It is so central to everywhere central station is across the road and the RLD is just 5 mins away!

The staff was so friendly and could not do enough for us. We hired a dvd during the night which was free of charge, great bonus :)

I would strongly recommend this hotel to others!

Just back from 3 nights. Really loved the hotel. 5 mins walk from Central Station, 5 mins from red light district and millions of bars/restaurants but a real oasis of calm. We have stayed in lots of A'dam hotels but this was one of the few with no noise from sirens/trams or street cleaners late at night/early am.
Renovation has been thoughtfully done and preserves real 1910 type feel. Lovely stained glass, marble, ironwork. Loved the quirky preserved and working "paternoster" lift. The thought of jumping on and off a lift which is on a continuous loop and never stops and has no doors is a bit scary - good job it now only operates for show!
Rooms have printed 1910 deco like wallpaper and curtains. Curtains were electric - ceilings very high so I presume that if you had to pull curtains by hand you would have wrecked them in no time. Bed very comfy. Great nespresso machine and well stocked free mini bar with good mix of wine/beer/spirits and loads of soft drinks and nuts and a choc bar.
Flat screen TV with plenty of channels and 2 free (rather raunchy) porn channels.
Bathroom nice with lovely Lanvin toiletries and good quality tissues and loo roll. Dressing gowns and slippers, sewing kit, postcards, writing paper, umbella, magazines etc. Brekky included and was nice but wouldn't pay the 25E each if it was an extra charge.
Pool/sauna/jacuzzi area great, although quite small - although there was only one other couple there when we were there.
Very helpful and friendly concierge who gave us an umbrella on the one day it was raining and we hadn't brought one down from the room..
We had no trouble checking in and getting our room at 13.00 - we were given an upgrade of room category, which was much appreciated especially as we had booked with another agent (1800 hotels) I take the point a previous reviewer made about the small check in setup - basically 1 or 2 people who check you in at a small ante room off the lobby. Later on Sat night there seemed to be a big influx of guests and quite a queue ( the key cards weren't working on the day we arrived so we had to be escorted to the room so this might have been resource intensive for the staff - we had been to the pool and I was in dressing gown and slippers and had to get through the queue to get someone to escort me to the room and open our door - felt a bit of a prat! )
Overall great stay and would go back and recommend to others. We did get a great rate which helped!

My husband and I stayed at the Grand Amrath for 3 nights last week. Overall the hotel was nice, and we were happy with it. We like having the free Internet and the free mini-bar in the room was a nice perk, it had mostly beverages in it: orange juice, water, sprite, coke, beer and some nips of liquior.
As others have pointed out, my husband also totally liked the automatic curtains that have a remote control.
Very close to the train station, one reason why we pick staying here over other places. We took the train in from Brussels and literally walked about 5 minutes to the hotel. Also took a daytrip to Delft by train and also the train to the airport, so in that sense the location was very convient for us. Also the area was nice, close enough that you could walk to the Red Light District, but not be staying directly in it, close to restaurants, for the price we were pretty happy. Room was rather large, had a cool coffee/espresso/tea maker, and the bathroom was a decent size, and also the bath tub, very large for Europe, although the shower was this strange little glass cube that we had never seen before. Overall good hotel

My partner and I went to this hotel on Honeymoon. The website promises "light spacious rooms". Whilst the bathroom was very spacious the bedroom was not. The bedroom was also dark even with all the lights on. In fact to read my wife had to leave the curtains open and sit next to the window to avoid straining her eyes.

The bathroom was fantastic with a lovely walk in shower.

The level of service was probably the most disappointing. Whilst no one was rude no one was particularly welcoming or friendly. Whilst we were checking in the receptionist answered 3 or 4 telephone calls and left us waiting.

We took our car to the Amrath and they did offer valet parking but no where to actually unload your car whilst you got out. When we arrived we had to park in a busy bus lane with the hazard lights on whilst we unloaded. When we were loading the car to leave the car was completely blocking a side street with a police car waiting to get past!

The room did have a complimentary mini bar which was great. One night we had already drank our free drinks so went to the bar for a relaxing drink before going to bed. There was no barman there and we had to wait 10 minutes whilst there were 3 members of staff within view of us chatting in the deserted restaurant. When the barman did arrive there was no apology for the wait. I ordered a Gin and Tonic and was told that there was no Gin. I find it hard to believe and laughable that a 5 star hotel had no bottles of Gin that he could have opened. I had a barcardi instead, didn't enjoy and left most of it un-drunk.

I've stayed in a fair few 5 star hotels, costing around £80 - £200 / night.

This was one of my favourites.

Given the £ to Euro exchange rate it was towards the top of my budget but was worth it.

Will try to avoid what others have covered but cannot resist saying how interesting the building is, inside and out.

Enjoyed the very personal check in service. Hotel seemed quiet but maybe you don't see many people due to the maze of corridors.

Free wireless internet is always handy and the free minibar was excellent. 2x wine, 2x beer, 5x shots, various mixers and water. Not sure why people did not get their's stocked up every night, we were told on arrival (without asking) that it is restocked fully every day and it was (around noon). If it is not restocked then just tell them.

I found the staff excellent, they seemed rightly proud of the building and pleased to be working there.

Wellness centre is very pleasant and was quiet whenever I used it. Pool is small, steam room was out of order, 3 good saunas and an OK hot tub. Had a decent sports massage.

Bar / Restuarant / Breakfast all fairly quiet but I never normally use these facilities anyway. Had breakfast one morning out of laziness, E25 is not cheap but it was very pleasant. Was surprised the hot food in particular was of high quality given that it was quiet.

Hotel allowed me a 1pm checkout at no extra charge, this was much appreciated.
