“Unique hotel well located, not 5 star”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 7, 2013

Positives:
- Historical look
- Close to many attractions and central station, has water view
- Free unlimited WiFi, free mini bar, free coffee machine
- Pool

Improvements:
- Old Hallways
- Ease of checking in/out
- Revolving front entrance door (the only main one), hard to push luggage through it

Close to:
Chinatown, Royal Palace, Old/New Church

Stayed in Nov. 2013

- Very close to Amsterdam Central Station, Chinatown, numerous attractions
- Historical building, sit-down check-in inside front office, halls are little old fashioned looking, but pairs well with the building's exterior
- Spacious rooms with free mini bar (restocked daily) and free coffee machine, as well as free WiFi, remote controlled curtains (functioned properly for us, but many commented on something weird with the curtains which I won't mention here)
- Great swimming pool with man-made starlit night sky, as well as a gym and saunas
- The staff are very nice and professional, overall

This hotel lived up to it's 5 star status. A lovely big room, large comfortable bed, strong free wifi internet signal, plus the best, warmest hotel swimming pool I've ever experienced. I would be more than happy to stay here again.

We booked this Hotel as it looked Grand and we loved the personality and location. We were not disappointed. Historic building that has been refurbished with great thought keeping details that are unique.
As we approached we were greeted by a red carpet and a team of smiling professional staff that were attentive to detail.
Our room was spacious with very high ceilings. The windows so enormous we had to have electric curtains to be able to close them - A novelty that my husband too control of.
Bed was comfortable as the rest of the room which was well kept by housekeeping that came in and made sure everything was perfect before our return in the evening.
The decor in the room was not my taste but grew on me as the days went on.
Bar was excellent, Restaurant very good. Food superb. Location great and easy to find.
All in all an excellent city break with style. Loved the umbrellas by the door as we did need them as we did see a lot of rain.
Look forward to returning one day.

I took a chance on this hotel as I normally stay at the Renaissance when on business in Amsterdam. The plusses: (1) truly remarkable architecture (2) very spacious rooms (by European standards) with amazing vaulted ceilings, a comfortable bed and ample bathroom space. (3) Free mini-bar (4) lovely indoor swimming pool.

But what "makes" a five star in my mind is impeccable service and amenities and in this respect the hotel falls short. The staff are "typically Dutch", which is to say strictly focused on policy versus guest satisfaction. They were unwilling to provide an early check in, even though there were clean rooms available in my class - instead they were focused on trying to up sell me to a suite. Most true 5 star hotels would provide the upgrade if space was available.

During my 5 day stay, no member of staff greeted me upon entering the lobby, checked to see if there was anything they could do to be of assistance or showed any interest at all. These are simple things - but they are what define 5 star hotels.

The gym is unacceptable - one broken, old bow flex machine and a weight bench with a couple older cardio machines. Truly not 5 star quality.

The common areas need some refurbishing to make them more luxurious - though there was a note advising that new carpeting was on the way - which would make a positive difference.

Bottom line - I paid a 4 star rate and got a 4 star hotel, so I am satisfied. But I will likely return to the Renaissance as they have better service standards and a lovely gym.

Stayed for 3 nights in a superior double with a city view room. We asked for a high floor (obviously this is relative in Amsterdam as they do not have particularly tall buildings) and we had great views over the roof tops towards the city. The room was spacious and you could sit on the window sill with a beer (other drinks are available) and watch the sun go down. Bed was very comfortable with big feather pillows. The free mini bar is also a really good concept - clearly they have worked out how much people use it and it is built into the room rate but we still think it is a great feature. The staff were all very pleasant and helpful. We had a snack in the bar one evening - which was good quality and tasty - however we did not have breakfast or any other meals in the hotel so don't know the quality. The spa was very good. Pool, steam room, sauna x 2, hot tube. A small gym as well. The location is great - just a 10 minute amble to the old town with its interesting window displays... We are always a bit confused by ratings of hotels but to us this was a very good four star - not a true five star. But don't let that put you off. Would stay again.

Beautiful redone old shipping building near train station.Easy walking distance to restaurants and boat trips along canal. The hallways are somewhat dark.,and almost maze like .Our room had a canal view, it was very big! The bath accessories were great, along with the fluffy robes they provide.I must say the bed was incredibly comfy with a nice downlike comforter. The breakfast was very nice ,and included many items you don't see often. It was about 25 Euros. The mini bar is complimentary. It is restocked each day, although popcorn was the only food item.Would recommend highly!
