“Free mini bar”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2013

Very good location, room large clean. It did take a long time to check in, they did hold luggage while we went out. Our rooms were not cleaned til after 4pm everyday we were there. But the mini bar was restocked every morning. No ice, had to get ice at bar, they suggested room service, I have no patience for room service. The hotel was history, I asked for a rooftop viewing, needed to get permission from management. The spa offered rooftop massage, I was just nosey and wanted a look from above. The manager who took me up there seemed indifferent to my curiosity and enthusiasm. I thought the hotel was a great piece of history and was looking for some history, but I guess she was just too busy with management to be friendly. The hotel is within site of the train station with good connections to all places in Amsterdam. We did not eat at the hotel. The outside of the hotel looks like a model for Disney or other monster type films, just great. The only thing about checkout is that they added a tax, which we had a prepaid bill and they were not supposed to add anything else. I discussed this with management of the hotel and they insisted they were within their rights to bill this amount. The booking agency we used disagreed with the management and refunded us. Our booking clearly stated all was prepaid except meals, spa services and parking. BTW don't park a car there I heard it was 50 euros a day to park.

Hotel Amrath is a rather odd combination of marble art deco industrial design. The location is great, walk 3 blocks to the train station. We stayed in a room overlooking the canal, large room with a comfortable king bed. Maybe the best thing about the hotel is the very cool swimming pool and spa area. A swim and sauna was just the thing after a long day of walking and sightseeing. Breakfast is expensive. I didn't eat in the restaurant. Staff was very helpful, I really enjoyed my stay.

Room Tip: Ask for an upper floor, there are rooms on the first, on heavily trafficked halls you want to avoid...

The building in itself is a marvel. Apparently it is more than 100 years old and was converted into a hotel around 7 years back.

The hotel for sure has an old world charm and is far away from modernity in all aspects. The rooms are quite huge and the junior suite was like two drawing rooms put together.

Well located in the city centre, this place offered decent value for money in comparison to the other branded 5 star hotels around.

I will say that the architecture of the hotel is beautiful and with more attention to the decor, this would be a stunning hotel.

I cannot complain about the service here. Yes, check in and check out were slow and I felt there could have been more staff helping the queues of about 7 people at any one time, but the staff were friendly, attentive and helpful. The bar staff were also lovely.

For a 5 year old hotel the carpets are worn and laid badly, lending a very shabby air to a building that deserves better. Our room was basement - almost street level which we didn't mind but if it's your first time in Amsterdam make sure you ask for a canal view.

The bathroom was clean, but a tiny cubicle shower with a zero water pressure waterfall head is not 5 star. The beds are exceptionally comfortable and I had no problem with the cleanliness of the room. The free mini bar was a good deal!

The wellness centre is fine. Again, not 5 star but clean and very handy. The gym is one running machine, one barbell and a bike.

I would stay here again if I could get a good deal on Expedia etc, but my expectations will be much lower next time.

after spending a long day travlleling as part of a business trip, i arrived to the hotel late to discover they had sold my room...and this wasnt a once off mistake as a couple arrived shortly after to me to be told their room was also sold. the hotel had clearly overbooked in the hope that there would be some cancellations. this is a disgraceful way to do business. i wouldnt expect such tactics from a one star hotel, let alone a five star
they had me transferred to another five star hotel, although it felt more like a four star. The room i got here was considerably smaller than the one i had originally booked with the amrath

Room Tip: book a different hotel

I had checked out this hotel on Trip Advisor before I left. The reviews were dead on! The hotel is a 4 star hotel and the negatives - poor lighting and limited drawer space - were very accurate. Despite this, the hotel is very clean, modern and the bed very comfortable. The location was excellent as it's right near the train station, Initially we walked everywhere, but on our last day decided to take the tram to the Van Gogh museum during the day and the Concertgebouw in the evening. It was so easy as there is much information at the train station and very easy to purchase a daily tram ticket to travel around the city. One thing we learned from a visitor was if you go to the Concertgebouw you can show your ticket on the tram and you can ride there for free on the day on the performance.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2013

Stayed here three nights in early September. Reception area is very cramped and inefficient. Staff tried hard but the cubbyhole they work in makes it difficult for them and guests particularly if there is more than one or two checking in at the same time. A curious layout to say the least.

The main complaint is that there is no air conditioning in this hotel - how can a 5 star hotel not have air conditioning? Our room was overly warm and when I tried to adjust the thermostat settings to cool the room it quickly became apparent that the device on the wall was cosmetic for that purpose. When I phoned the front desk they offered to bring us a floor standing fan! A fan in a 5 star hotel - unbelievable.

We then asked if the window at the top of the room could be opened to get some air circulation. Since the ceilings are 20 feet high a long pole had to be used to pry the window down - except the window was stuck in the frame and despite the employee literally hanging on the end of the pole to force the window down it didn't budge more than a few inches. While this provided some humorous entertainment it did nothing to cool the room. We ended up running the fan throughout our stay.

Since we had prepaid the room we had no choice to stick it out for the three nights. Fortunately the weather was cool but good luck if you stay there during a hot spell. Aside from the lack of air conditioning the room was only adequate - certainly not five star quality - a high three star maybe.

On the plus side the hotel is centrally located, quiet and the breakfast was good. Staff are very friendly and courteous.

Overall a very average hotel with a very pretentious 5 star rating. .
