“Excellent hotel - remarkable environment”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 17, 2013

The Grand Hotel Amrath is an amazing old building, with beautiful decor and lovely rooms. Most comfortable hotel bed I've ever slept in, and my room was large and airy with a great bathroom. Service is well ... it's Dutch - precise and efficient, if not overly warm. Bars and restaurants are excellent and the food is of high quality. Great wellness centre too, with a pool, spa and saunas and a small gym. Close to the city, and the Central Station as well. Would definitely return.

I can't say enough good things about this hotel! Everything about it was top notch, high quality and over the top superior. We had some of the best food we've ever eaten in their restuarant; had the best service from a waiter we've ever had; and had the biggest, most beautiful and most comfortable room ever! Fantastic location; wonderfully helpful conceirge and the most unique and beautiful old building I've ever seen. Highly recommend this hotel!

Room Tip: I would highly recommend upgrading to the Superior Deluxe Room. It was definitely worth the extra...

First of all, I would like to recommend all the staff who work at this hotel, because they made our stay so pleasant. From Mohammed in the bar to the girls at breakfast and the staff in the wellness centre, they all deserve a special mention. As do the concierge and the reception staff. The room is fabulous appointed, Rituals products in the bathroom, free minibar and espresso machine and WiFi. The bed linen is excellent and breakfast was impetuosity. If you want to stay in the heart of Amsterdam, there not many places better! We loved it!

My friend and I stayed at this hotel during July 2013. The location was great. It is very close to the rail station, restaurants, and shopping. The room was small but adequate. I enjoyed the free mini bar. We really did not see many staff members. The reception area was very unique. It was just a room with two desks. That said - it is a impressive building. I would very likely stay there again if I am ever in Amsterdam again.

We arrived from our trip to Ireland looking forward to visiting Amsterdam. We were only going to stay @ the Amrath for two days as we already booked another hotel our last 2 nights which turned out in an awful location (thanks Priceline). The individual at Reception told us he could honor the price for all four nights, but might have to change our rooms. We were fine with that as we really didn't want to change hotels because it gets to be a pain. So we come back from a nice day and our key is not working. Ok, so we assume we will just have to move rooms. The lady with Black Hair ( I wish I could remember her name) was basically turning her nose up at us saying she can't honor what her colleague had said and was just very rude. Especially, talking Dutch right in front of us knowing we are Americans. Well my wife knows some German, which has some similarities and she was basically talking trash about us. We were very nice to her and she couldn't even smile once when we first came in to the reception area to talk to them about the room.

So unfortunately we paid for the room because we were tired of moving hotels throughout Ireland and now here. Really put a bad taste in our mouth for Amsterdam. You would exoect more from a 5 star hotel.

Oh and $25 Euros for a breakfast buffet is not worth it unless your going to offer Mimosas or something. Concierge and everyone else was very nice just the Reception was not. Maybe they need to have a counter to stand behind instead of sitting at a table. The table was not very inviting I must say, not sure why it was set up like that.

The free mini bar was nice, I have never seen that before. I guess if you drank everything then you make up the difference in price of the hotel with some others.

In the end, if she wouldn't have been so rude, it wouldn't have been that bad to just pay the extra $. It was vacation and we weren't going to let a little money ruin our trip, but she sure did not help. So they got the $200 euros extra and left a bad taste. We would never stay here again all because the reception people were rude and don't honor a commitment.

I almost forgot, they didn't even provide the wake up call we asked for, luckily we always have a 2nd alarm set as we didn't want to miss our flight home and when we mentioned that as we were checking out the reception guy didn't even apologize. Even at the crappiest hotel in The US they would at least apologize for not making the wake up call.

Oh well, a nice city, but won't be rushing back anytime soon.

Our room in this hotel was lovely, high ceilings, gorgeous bathroom. It had a very grand feel. The room was clean, beds comfortable and I enjoyed the free mini bar. The rest of the hotel I did not like so much. It had the feel of an old boarding school, and felt slightly cold and eerie. The location was also a little farther than we usually like to be, although the walk is good exercise! We got a good price on the hotel and I am glad I tried it as I have been wanting to stay there for a while. However, it would not be my first choice for future stays. Definitely a good hotel, just not a favourite.

As expected the general settings where up to the expected level. The Room was good and the spa clean and well kept. However when looking into the details the hotel was only partly up to the standard, which you would expect from a 5 star hotel. While some may say, that these are only small things, you might want to remember that the delux room is around 230€.
Plus Side:
- Competent and Friendly concierge service
- Quiet and nicely decorated room
- Spa with clean hot tub, steam bath, 3 saunas and pool

Depending on the day
- Friendliness of the Reception varied greatly during the stay. While we were welcomed to an extremely cold atmosphere on arrival, the one on the second day was very friendly and immediately called the room service to have our one big blanked changed against 2 single ones when asked.

Down Side:
- Breakfast was nothing special and prepared very loveless. If you don't get it as a special offer included in the room price, don't get it.
- The room had many dents on the furniture. While non of them dangerous, they were noticeable and not the kind of scratches, which would give a nice atmosphere.
- The cleanness of the room only reached the visible area. The hair dryer was very dusty, and below the faucet of the bathtub, noone had ever cleaned, which is extremely bad as it is visible if you sit in the tub. The bedside drawers were also rather dusty.
- 300 € safety deposit!!! The room was booked through the amex platinum service and prepaid. However the policy is to take a 300 € deposit in case you use services and then disappear.

All in all I'd say only the price, the spa and the concierge is 5 star. The rest is missing the details which turn 4 or 3 into 5 stars.

Room Tip: Rooms towards the train station might be louder.
