“I disagree with the others”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2013

Yes, the hotel is very conveniently located to Central Station, and just far enough away to escape the crowded streets.

We found this hotel to be in a great location. The room was huge! The mini bar was stocked daily, the electric curtains worked, and the staff was very helpful! True, there is a lack of air conditioning and this is the only negative I found. There is some kind of fan system, but it could have been cooler. Our roomed was cleaned every day while we were out by putting the "clean room" hanger in the door knob. Funny story though, I could not find the toilet! It was in a small WC across from the main bathroom. I had to call the front desk to ask where to find it!

I only had coffee in the dining room and was not charged for it. I think the food in the restaurant was too expensive and never ate there, but then again, you have to expect that from a hotel. All hotels seemed to be the same.

I would stay here again without a doubt!

Room Tip: Book a deluxe room with city view, you will not be disappointed!

We ate an incredible 4 course meal at the hotel and they gave us a walking tour. It is the most beautiful hotel I have ever seen. It is very near Central Station and the cannal it sits near is my favorite area Oude Kerk. I can only imagine how nice the rooms and service in them are...and if for no other reason than to behold this beautiful building it is well worth a visit.

The hotel is conveniently located near Central Station. A beautiful building and that's where the praise stops; reception staff have no smile on their face, managers are 'title' only and incapable or unwilling to assist, very hot rooms, no air conditioning, small rooms [even the mini bar fridge would not open as obstructed by the bed], gym extremely basic, spa facilities have no staff present and very very basic - even the Jacuzzi water was cold. Asked for the hotel manager and was told by the duty manager [Linda] there is no hotel manager. very expensive - might as well stay at cheap hostel and you'll get the same service. World Hotels advertise that you'll get Flying Blue points but in fact you don't UNLESS you book directly with them and not through an agent, such as Expedia...I call that false advertising. Finally, you pay 25 euro for breakfast...my advice spend half that and you'll have a feat else where. Overall...disgraceful for an allegedly Deluxe hotel. Here is the punch line - the room was so hot and no air conditioning and the excuse is that the hotel is old and has internal air only not air conditioning...I was told to close the curtains and sit in darkness until sunset and further, I was offered a fan and bucket of ice to cool the room

Room Tip: make sure you ask for a cool room...in my case, I was told to close the curtains and stay in total d...

The building is amazing and we were upgraded from a junior to a two room suite. The room was amazing but a few things like the electric curtain not working and having to chase up housekeeping at 17:00 to clean just took the shine off.

In saying that staff were friendly we used the spa, bikes and bar and all were very good.
The hotel is in a good location close to neuwmarket.

Had a wonderful 3 nights in Amsterdam. The hotel was something else oh so different from other 5 * hotels. Had lots of features from its past uses all put to good use. The reception in a room with chairs and desks was brilliant compared to the usual Long reception desks where you stand in line. Can thoroughly recommend this as a an alternative 5* experience.

The Grand Hotel was a fantastic place to wind down after each day we spent in the hustle and bustle of central Amsterdam. A 10-15 min walk from Centraal station was a relief after a crammed (albeit for only 15 mins) train journey from the airport.

Check in was efficient, but please be aware they take a 100 Euro deposit from a credit/debit card at this stage. They use this to take city tax and any charges made to your room.
The concierge will help take your bags to the room, and I must recommend this, as the hotel is a real rabbit warren.

As promised, the twin beds were converted to a king size by Room Service shortly after we arrived and was perfectly comfortable. The room was on the small side and had no view, but was very quiet. The bathroom and shower were clean and worked well. We made full use of the complimentary mini-bar stocked with various soft and alcoholic drinks, and this was replenished by the time we arrived back each evening.

On our last day, we checked out, and got refunded the 100 euro minus city tax of approx 5 euro per night. As our flight was not until the evening, they held our luggage securely for us so we could enjoy the last day of our trip. A massive plus point in my eyes.

The Wellness Centre downstairs was a non event. Small pool, limited seats and not alot going for it. Almost felt like an add on to fulfill a 5* criteria.

Overall a great hotel, with real character and very helpful staff. The size of the room a minor disappointment, but as we spent most of our time in the city, it made little difference to us! And the leisure centre in the basement which was not worth the elevator trip down!

We spent 4 nights in this impressive former shipping company building. It was interesting simply to walk up to the several floors and admire the Art Nouveau style. Our room was comfortable, although we had no view. It was quiet which is so important to me. Nice touch to have a free minibar. The shower was powerful but hard not to get water everywhere Enjoyed the pool too. Wifi was slow but I wasn't there for business. The staff were friendly and informative. It's a great location as so handy to walk to the Central Station which has all the tram links to the major sights and also easy to walk and explore the canals.
