“Great hotel in centre of amsterdam”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2013

My partner and I had three nights in this splendid hotel situated right in the centre of Amsterdam. 5 minutes from the central station and in walking distance of all the best of amsterdamn. The staff were friendly and efficient. The hotel was very well appointed and clean. Excellent facilities. We will definitely be returning next year. I cannot recommend this hotel more highly.

This is the third time I have stayed at this wonderful Hotel, and I would never stay at anywhere else in Amsterdam.
From the time you arrive to the time you leave you are made to feel really welcome.
From the reception to the bell Station and the bar everyone is so nice.
Thank you all again for a great stay.

Room Tip: Make sure you don't get a room on the lower ground floor

Agree with the reviews that this is not a five-star property but overall we were pleased with our five –night stay in late July. Hallway carpeting needs to be replaced and room furnishings had a fair share of scuffs and scrapes. Bedding was comfortable and room temperature adequately cool on very warm days. The location is convenient to walk many places and easy access to trams for the museum area. We had asked for a quiet room and were in the back overlooking a quiet courtyard. We had plenty of canal views during the day and were happy to have a peaceful place to return. Bathroom was roomy with double sinks, separate shower and tub. Free mini-bar a nice plus at the end of the day. The building has a rich background—if you ask the concierge they will give you a printed history that leads you to explore other parts of the building. Staff was extremely helpful and friendly. Breakfast was included in our stay and had many choices with some variation each day. We did not have time to use the spa or gym. Three of our five nights we had dinner at nearby Ristorante Italia Oggi which we found on our own but I’m sure the concierge could provide recommendations as well.

I and my wife stayed in this hotel for 3 nights and it was really an excellent choice to make. Specially when the wife is happy with the hotel :)

Snapshot
1. Hotel Location: I think it can not be better, Centraal station 3-4 mins walk, right beside canal, red light district- 8-10 mins walk, city center square 10-15 mins walk, excellently connected to trams, canal bus, train, airport 20 mins drive.

2. Property- Very interesting, it was a old shipping office building, very well converted into a hotel though you feel the office like maze inside the hotel like finding elevator is a trick but fun there were lots of things which reminded you of an old office, like the reception, it's in a room like corporate employees sitting and working in their cabins, we were standing in front of it still were unable to find it, but no complaints the front office representative saw us came out and made us comfortable. The building from outside is very interesting and impressive and is one of the tourist sites in the bus and boat tours.

3. Room- Very comfortable, spacious and full of amenities. Bathroom was with 2 sinks separate shower area and bath tub, luxurious toiletries. Bed was extra comfy and selection of TV channels were good. We were delighted to learn that fully stocked mini bar was complimentary to use and replenished every day. We loved it.

4. Service- "Outstanding" that is the only word, special compliments to reception, breakfast and concierge staff. Concierge people were very accommodating they gave us detailed explanation about everything and literally guided us like a baby in the map, that was very helpful indeed. Breakfast staff was the best I have ever seen in many extensive experience of staying in the best of the hotels. My wife is vegetarian and the serving staff saw her confused at the buffet as there was not much options for her, the guy approached her and asked if she is vegetarian and offered her a fresh vegetarian sandwich, outstanding really. Even next day when went for breakfast he recognized her the sandwich was on table in no time. The day of our check-out we were running late to catch our flight, so we were having the breakfast in a hurry and serving staff approached us asked us if we are in a hurry and offered us to pack the sandwitches for us so that we can eat it calmly at the airport. This is what I call the world class experience.

Overall, I think it is one of the best hotel to stay in Amsterdam.

Thanks Grand Amrath for making our holidays truly memorable.

Room Tip: May be canal view but understandably comes with a premium.

Booked this hotel due to the 5 Star status and the reviews the hotel has had including pictures the website had posted on Expedia!

The hotel from outside looks nice! However, inside, was rather run down and did not look like a 5* hotel! The reception was placed in a rather odd location and was not ideal for people checking in and out of the hotel. We arrived around 12pm/1pm to check in earlier but our room was not available at the time! We paid for a deluxe room and was upgraded to the superior room as we were elite members. We left our luggage with the concierge and popped out! On return, our luggage was taken up to our room. The corridors to the rooms were gloomy and dull and needed some refurbishments. We were told our mini bar would be free of charge and would be replaced every day, which was handy!

The room was spacious. Bathroom was spacious with the shower, bathtub and bathroom.
Felt the housekeeper could of been better and cleaner! The towels were disgusting as there were yellow stains in the towels - yuck! Generally, the towels felt old and smelled of chlorine!
Wifi was free however the speed and coverage was so poor it was unusable. We received 20% off additional food, which we did not use. The hotel was central and walkable distance to areas, which was handy!

Spa was OK pool was small and thought the spa area would of been bigger and included treatment rooms!

We asked if it was possible to checkout late as we were elite members- we were told there would be an additional costs, which would be charged by the hour! That was ridiculous!
We decided to stow our luggage and collect in the evening!
Generally, the staff were friendly and helpful but in terms of 5* I would not rate it. The hotel is old and shabby and needs work done. Next time, I would consider staying elsewhere as it was not worth the price!

Room Tip: Choose the Double Tree Hilton across the water

The service is great, from everyone practically. I like the location as it is the no. 2 stop of the hop on hop off red bus and the hotel connexion bus stops here too.
If you are travelling with someone more mature, who cannot or dont like to walk alot, it is not so great as the nearest food locations are at about 100m away. To go anywhere, you will need to take the taxi. But concierge will book the taxi service and it is very efficient. There is a 2nd exit which has a small elevator type platform for visitors who cannot walk up the stairs. oh ya, the main steps leading to the hotel dosent have railings and the step is pretty steep The concierge will run over to the 2nd door so no issue.
The minibar, nespresso wifi is all free which is nice. If you like strong tea, you may need to bring your own Tetleys or Lyons as the tea is nice but flowery and light.
Even though they say free mini bar, sometime, the bottle opener is not in the room and you will need to request for it and the ice bucket of course.
For those who prefer twin beds, they are actually 2 single which are placed together.and they are the slim single type of beds. I do like the pillows and the duvet and bed as they are of very good quality.
Breakfast is Euro25 per head, but they sometimes have promotion in that if you book the breakfast the night before, it is cheaper at Euro 19.+
One reviewer mentioned that the room lights are not bright, I do tend to agree with him.
After a few nights, here, I would stay here again on my next trip.

Room Tip: I was happy with the Ground floor rooms.

The hotel was welcoming and we were ushered to our room which we found through the corridor maze. A none functioning tele - the cleaner had dislodged the lead in the back - and a broken hair dryer lessened the wow factor but we were still impressed with the general ambiance and location.

After 3 nights stay, ( where we toured the city and ate at wonderful restaurants), the trip was over and we waited in reception for the shuttle to the airport. 10 minutes after it's due time I approahed the the receptionist who informed us that they didn't really recommend the shuttle as its time keeping was variable (news to us- they suggested and booked it) then she chased up the shuttle and informed us that a taxi would take us to the airport for the same cost. The cost turned out to be more than twice the price and guess what - the Amrath didn't want to know.

Room Tip: Ask fro a canal view. The scenery can be inspiring - Amsterdam is very attractive,
