“Grand hotel, grand time!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 2, 2013

Stayed at Grand Amrath, Amsterdam for a long weekend in mid-July. Very well placed for finding the hot tourist spots. Let me just say at outset - the negative reviews for this hotel are misplaced. It's a wonderful old building with lots of original features from it's shipping house days (including the ticket office on 2nd floor) so if you are used to/expect modern/contemporary then it's not for you. Truly beautiful. We stayed in a superior deluxe room (upgraded from basic at €30 per night and well worth it) which was HUGE with electronically controlled curtains and a canal view. Separate WC and the shower cubicle was big and very, very clean. Robes were provided as was free minibar and free wifi which was a huge plus. Staff were very friendly and helpful, bar stocked an excellent Chablis Premier Cru and the one night we ate there the food was very, very good. Restaurant wasn't open although we couldn't quite understand why and we only had breakfast once (American buffet) but thought the €25 rate was good value as you could quite happily have eaten for a couple of hours. Spent a couple of hours on our last morning in the spa. Pool area extremely clean - had 3 sauna cabins and a steam room. Would have liked to have sampled a treatment but didn't think ahead! Overall would recommend this hotel and we would definitely return.

Room Tip: Canal rooms very quiet - didn't hear any noise from other rooms either.

As part of a bachelorette weekend, we stayed at the Amrath for one night and booked the Vespa arrangement. The rooms were spacious, clean, all one needs. Mini bar was included. We received a pick nick basket with our Vespa which contained fresh sandwiches, champagne, chocolats and fruits. Hotel breakfast was fine, not as extravagant as in the Krasnapolsky hotel. The hotel spa was a nice treat. All in all, we had a great stay at the Amrath. Price vs quality ratio was excellent. Would certainly return.

We had an excellent stay at the Amrath. Beautiful building and excellent customer service. The room was spacious, elegantly decorated, clean and equipped with everything (and more) you could possibly need. The spa was luxurious - beautiful place to relax at the end of the day exploring the city. The hotel is in a perfect location - central and close to most attractions/amenities.

We extend our appreciation to Mo, who worked behind the bar - he made us feel most welcome, and provided considerable help and assistance during our stay.

We will be recommending the Amrath to friends and family intending to visit Amsterdam.

Room Tip: Superior rooms are value for money.

Would stay here again, on arrival we were upgraded to a super deluxe room. Complimentary bar and coffee facilities which were stocked up every day. Lovely helpful staff. Breakfast was very nice, lots of choice. Leisure facilities small but nice after an exhausting day site seeing. Would definitely go back again.

Thinking that this hotel would provide a comfortable base for a 10 day stay in Amsterdam, I booked this hotel for myself and my boyfriend many months in advance. I read all the reviews, and emailed the hotel asking for a hotel room with a canal view, or at least a window that opened, since we'd be staying in mid-July. Despite an email confirmation, there was no room when we arrived, and even though we were told that if we packed our bags we could move to a different room, the hotel staff told us there was a mistake and we would not be able to. After keeping our bags packed for two nights, we returned to our room to find BLOOD on our pillow! Finally, we were moved to a second room (in the middle of the night, with NO help from the hotel. For two days we were literally woken up by the smell of sewage. After complaining twice to two managers about the blood and feces smell, they moved us to a beautiful room overlooking amsterdam--except that there was NO hot water! While the room was gorgeous, it was insulting that they were so unresponsive and simply did not care that our stay was a complete nightmare. This hotel does not remotely meet the qualifications of. 5-star hotel, none of which include cleanliness standards, anyway. Avoid this hotel if you want ANY relaxation on your vacation. This hotel is an insult to the wonderful city it is in.

Room Tip: Do NOT stay here!

The Hotel Grand Amrath will appeal to people to people who like Art Nouveau style architecture, love the sea and in a great location. As a shipping house built between 1912-1916, it is the first building fully constructed in the Amsterdam School style. I loved roaming from floor to floor checking out the seafaring decor theme. Not only is this hotel candy for your eyes, they are so proud of their beds that they ask you how you like the bed.

Room Tip: Some rooms have a small step up into the bath room. Be careful in the night that you don't trip.

My wife and I stayed here for our first time in 'Dam, the hotel is nice but very expensive. The location is excellent, cross a bridge and through a small gap in the houses and bang, you are in the red light district!

The mini bar is re stocked every day and free, and there is a spa on the ground floor which seemed good. We didn't eat at the hotel due to it being to expensive, plus there are loads of food joints to choose from just a stones throw away.

If we went to Dam again then I think we would stay somewhere cheaper, but if you are after a luxury break then this is the hotel for you.

I recommend the 'canal view' rooms, 3rd floor or higher, as you get a beautiful view and you are not facing the busy road.
