“Unique hotel with luxurious service in a great location!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 6, 2013

This hotel is a must stay! An excellent location within walking distance of the main downtown area. Excellent service 24/7 with a fantastic restaurant right on site! The pool and spa were clean and relaxing. The rooms were generally clean but a little dusty. Breakfast was AMAZING!!! I wish I was eating one of their croissants right now...

This hotel is beautiful and in a great location for the city. The rooms are really spacious, and the beds are super comfy. The spa is great and we really enjoyed our time there. The hotel staff were really helpful and polite and happy to help you with any request.
However a word of warning do not eat at the resturant, we had a very traumatic experience there and I would not like anyone else to encounter the aggressive and rude waiter who nearly ruined our trip.

Grand Hotel Amrath occupies a magnificent building and is situated very close to Amsterdam central station, making access to and from the hotel with bags, very easy. Overall our experience of the service was extremely poor except at our 'French' breakfast, where the waitress was good. On arrival, only two people were available to check guests in and out, and whilst the people at the desk were charming, it was quite a wait in the lobby. On our first day we arrived at lunch time and had tea and coffee in our room before setting out for the afternoon. When we returned at 21h00 we found all the used cups etc as the room had not been serviced. Perhaps this is standard, but in a 5 star hotel I would've expected more. We also asked for more coffee cream / milk which never arrived. We made our booking on Expedia and had to cancel the last night of our stay. Although we contacted the hotel two months before our stay, they were unwilling to refund some or part of our third night. This is probably standard practice but highly disappointing given we were able to give them such a long notice period.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room.

We loved the hotel, its beautiful and grand in a great location. The bed was the comfiest I've ever slept in, the free mini bar was great (although they were haphazard about refilling it) and we enjoyed the spa. The restaurant was horrible, poor food and worse service at extortionate prices. We complained after our meal and this felt like a battle (apparently the customer was 'wrong' at the Amrath' and this reflected on the whole hotel and stay for me, which is sad. If you go to the effort of training your cleaners to be polite then surely train your managers and waiters in basic customer service.

This hotel is well located and in easy walking distance of Amsterdam's Centraal Train station. Rooms were large enough and beautifully decorated. Nice bathroom as well, but did not include a makeup mirror. The mini bar was a plus, especially considering that breakfast was very expensive and not included in the price (approximately 40 USD). Coffee could be made in the room and orange juice was in the mini bar, replenished every day, without charge.

Reception staff was very helpful and friendly. Concierge could have been more helpful, especially since we had to get to the port on Queen's Day when all roads around the hotel were closed. Since we had a lot of luggage, that we did not feel we could pull all the way to the port, we asked for assistance from the concierge and he was unable to help us, even though we made the request a day ahead of time. Apparently since it was a holiday, there were no extra porters on hand. To my mind, this is not the level of service expected in a 5-star establishment.

Stayed for two nights Amsterdam city break. Amrath is within 10 mins walk of Central station and is pretty conveniently placed. Nice room (although the view was not good at all) nice bathroom and good housekeeping service. Mini bar is a nice touch as you do not pay any more for the drinks in it (you've paid enough to stay there already - right!). Really nice spa facility and excellent massages. Eat breakfast outside rather than pay 25 Euro per person.

Main restaurant: We had dinner on our second night, cannot fault the food and wine, it was superb. But come desert time we ordered the soufflé, our server told us it would be 10 to 13 minutes, no problem with that. After nearly half an hour we enquired and they said it was just coming up, then 5 mins later, they admitted that it had not been ordered even and would take another 10 to 13 mins to be ready. We were not inclined to wait that long having by now finished our wine and water so had to cancel desert.

All other aspects of the hotel are OK, they will take care of your bags if you arrive early or are flying home after check out time.

Overall, a very pleasant stay, just the hiccup with dinner service.

Room Tip: Book a city view room if you don't want to be looking at pipes and brick walls.

This hotel has old world charm, with modern comfort. The room was lovely, extremely comfortable, and the mini-bar, including liquor, sodas, water, peanuts and candy, was free and restocked daily! Every evening a maid knocked on our door and asked if we needed anything. We felt we got great service! The location was fabulous! Central Station was less than 5 minutes away and there were dozens of great restaurants, cafes and shops in the neighborhood. Breakfast is not free, but their "French breakfast" included warm bread, croissants, the inevitable cheese slices and cold cuts, juice, coffee or tea, and an egg, cooked the way you wanted, for 13 Euros. Given that, apparently, coffee shops in Amsterdam do not typically open until 9 am, we found the hotel restaurant convenient and a decent value. (We did not try their buffet breakfast. It was 25 Euros and after looking it over, we decided that it was overpriced for a bunch of stuff we wouldn't eat anyway.) We did not use the spa facilities, but several fellow guests said they were great. If we were to go to Amsterdam again, we would stay at the Amrath.
