The location, 5 star standard and opinions from other travellers were the reasons for choosing this hotel. This being our first trip to Amsterdam choosing accommodation was a bit like sticking a tail on the donkey, but overall I felt pleased that we had decided to stay at the Grand Amrath. The booking was made through last minute .com. The whole reservation process was smooth and easy, payment made prior to arrival. There is a quirky reception room to check in on arrival, the staff were very cheerful friendly and helpful.I paid an extra £25 per night for a room upgrade; this gave us a queen size bed and a huge, fabulous bathroom. A priority for me when staying away from home is to equal the home comforts or better them if possible. Next on the list is to have peace and quiet and undisturbed sleep. The bed was the most comfortable hotel bed that I have ever slept in. The room was immaculately cleaned and the maid service first class. One of the pleasures of staying was to have full use of the contents of the mini bar included, replenished each day free of charge.Use of the substantial room safe was also complimentary. We stayed on a room only basis leaving the hotel in the morning returning later in the evening. Breakfast is 25 euros each, an evening meal looked to be around the 40 euro each. Walk until you are opposite the railway station, staying on the same side of the road as the hotel and you come to an excellent breakfast bar. Double egg on toast with all the trimmings costs 7 euro. The only disappointment I had with the hotel was the actual location of the room. It was situated on the first floor in the middle of the building; the view from the window was of a wall and a flat roof with sky lights. Daylight entering the room was limited. I did request a high floor; quiet room with a view when booking with last minute.com. I also asked at reception if we could be moved to a room on a high floor with a canal view, only to be told that would only be possible after the first nights stay and if we chose to move rooms there would be an extra charge of 40 euros. I felt this was sharp practice and as we were only staying three nights using the hotel purely for a base it was not worth the hassle. Hence my rating of four stars not five. Viewing the exterior of the Hotel canal view rooms are obviously at a premium. There are a vast amount of rooms facing a busy main road, something to consider when making a reservation. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Amsterdam. A fascinating city. Plenty to see and do, warm, well mannered friendly people. Watch out for the cyclists, they appear at break neck speed from every direction.
