“Fine for us”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2012

We got this hotel on a blind 5* booking so we only paid @ £360 for 3 nights, which in hindsight, was an absolute bargain for last week in August.
It is on the edge of town really, just to the right of Central Station on the map, but Amsterdam is so small compared to London that this was no problem for us, although we are enthusiastic walkers. The hotel is a 5-10 minute stroll from Central Station.
We were greeted by a porter on the steps of the hotel when we arrived. We checked in and although we had arrived before check-in time, once they had checked that the room had been prepared, they were happy for us to use the room straight away. The hotel reserve E300 on your credit card so be prepared.
The porter then explained and/or showed us the hotel facilities and then, our room. I didn't pay top hotel of the world price so I was more than happy with what we got. The room was big, the bed, huge, a good en-suite, ample storage, a seating area, plenty of hotel info, a big t.v with a couple of English channels to keep up with the basics. We didn't have a view but we did get exactly what we asked for....a quiet room. We didn't eat at the hotel, or use the spa, swimming pool, bars or anything other than in-room facilities, so cannot comment on these.
The bed was very comfortable with plenty of pillows. The en-suite had a very deep bath and a separate shower with a choice of drencher or ordinary shower-head. There was a full range of toiletries.
The in-room temperature was perfect even though we had every type of weather in our 3 night stay. There is a lovely coffee maker and nothing is rationed so a quick call to reception will get a top up on anything. Not long after we arrived, we had a knock on the door asking what we needed more of so we didn't even need to call them as they kept what we used topped up. There is a complimentary mini-bar which includes a bottle of red and white wine, spirits, beer, soft drinks, mixers and nuts which is refilled every day. Also, little things like an umbrella, guide book, safe, hairdryer, kettle, it was all we needed.
I would recommend this hotel to anyone. I'm not used to 5* star city centre hotels, so it didn't bother me that there were a few imperfections maintenance-wise here and there and that the decor in the room was horrendous. It was clean and had everything I wanted.

I spent 4 nights at Amrath Hotel in Amsterdam and I'm very satisfied.
Very central hotel, just in front of Central Station where arrive trains from the airport and near touristic bus station.
Exellent service.
King's size bed!!!!

We were looking forward to stay at the Amrath in Amsterdam. It was supposed to be a 5 star hotel but it was not even a 2 star hotel !! The only nice thing about this hotel is its location if you need to go to the train station.
At our arrival, we were told that we had been upgraded even if the reservation had been made 3 months before. We ended up in the basement with a partial view of the sidewalk and cars parked by the window. It was just awful ! The TV did not work and there was no bottle opener to as least have a pop from the complementary hotel bar. Finally, there is no air conditioning and there was no fresh air in the room. They gave us an oscillating pedestal fan !

My mother and I stayed at this hotel for 7 nights and had an overall very good experience. It is definitely not a 5 star hotel, but there were a few things that were 5 star quality. First and foremost, getting there from the train station takes 7-10 minutes to walk. As soon as you exit Centraal Station and you're facing the city and trams, turn left and walk along the canal. You will see the Floating Chinese Restaurant, another hotel, the library, and the NEMO Museum. The hotel faces all of these sites. You will see flags around the building and this will be it. Be careful when you cross the street. While the lights say GO, beware of the overzealous bikers and the very silent trams. They are everywhere here. I can't stress this enough. Look both ways several times before you cross.

When we checked in, it was raining, as predicted. The lobby area is VERY SMALL and cannot accommodate that many people, maybe 6 at the same time. So be prepared to wait outside of the building, especially if you are checking in at the same time as the large tour groups. There are steps and no ramp and the doormen seem to be nonexistent when you need them since they are busy helping others. There is no signage so you'll be wandering for awhile. The check-in counter is the office on your left as you enter the building. There are probably 2 on staff at the same time. The wait time to check in is approximately 10-20 minutes. When we checked in at 1pm, the room was NOT ready and they made us and several others wait for the rooms to be cleaned. Not so fun when it is raining and you just got off an international flight! They don't recommend where to go either, oddly enough. When I mentioned that I had to use the restroom, they escorted me downstairs to their spa which I will describe in length later.

The room itself is exactly how others have described it in their reviews on this site: high ceilings, art deco decor, free minibar and espresso machine...The 5 star aspect of the room: the bed and pillow is the MOST COMFORTABLE and you will sleep well here; the free minibar includes the alcohol and we took plenty advantage of it as well as the chocolate bar and peanuts; the espresso machine spoiled us with its incredible tasting coffee; free wifi; quiet. The less than stellar aspects: the bathroom marble is not exactly clean, in fact, it looks dirty with stains; there are NO HAND TOWELS, only washcloths and body towels; there is no soap dish; Lanvin does not supply their bath products anymore and it is a company called Ritual; while the bathtub is large enough, the shower is handheld and actually falls out of the holder while you're showering; the drain doesn't drain well; in terms of lighting, it is VERY DIM in the bathroom, so for you ladies out there, be prepared. The bedroom can be lit by opening the curtains during the day so at least you can see yourself in the mirror.

The building itself is a MAZE. Walk around. It is beautiful and historic but the room configuration is very confusing. So when you check in and they insist on a bellhop to assist, agree to it. Also, there is 1 WORKING ELEVATOR which accommodates 6 people only without suitcases. The sign says 2. If you are older, ask for a room close to the elevator. In terms of room assignment, request a room higher than the 1st floor. The view, whether you're facing the courtyard or the street, is much better. No one wants to be on the street level or lower. Unfortunately, I noticed a Chinese tour group was booked in the basement level and I can't imagine what view they had.

The spa: The pool you see in the pictures is actually very small: 15 strokes long and 5 strokes wide. The jacuzzi can accommodate only a couple and there were MANY couples lining up for this. It also is NOT HOT at all. In fact there is cold water coming out of one of the spigots. There are 2 showers. There is 1 wet sauna which doesn't quite work-the steam rises and you're seated so you don't get the steam. There are 3 dry saunas which I would consider 5 star-the heat generated was amazing. But make sure there isn't a couple making out or a naked man laying in it as we had humorously encountered! There is a small gym with a TV and if you want to work out on your vacation, you can do so until 11pm.

Finally, when you check in, they will put a hold of approximately 100 Euros per night on your credit card for incidentals, which is typical of most hotels. But be forewarned, when you check out, they will assess you a city hotel tax that is mandatory, and that is around 10 Euros per day, and this is on top of what you have already pre-paid.

The location of the hotel was within walking distance of most of the trams and busses gong to the major tour sites. You are right behind the Red Light District and Chinatown. There is a fantastic bakery called De Bakkerswinkel close by. Try not to eat at the hotel since it is overpriced and there are so many other wonderful options, including La Place in the Library across the street. The hotels provide umbrellas so you don't have to pack one. They even have converters in case you forget yours. You just leave a deposit and it will be refunded at the end of your stay.

The male concierge staff was incredibly helpful; the cleaning staff work very hard; the bellhops were super friendly.

Room Tip: In terms of room assignment, request a room higher than the 1st floor. The view and the noise level...

My family decided to go to Amsterdam for a long weekend. We were very impressed by this hotel. It was a lovely art deco building and lobby. The breakfast was great. The rooms we had were very luxurious as were the bathrooms. The minibar was free which was a big bonus! The health centre was good my only tiny complaint was that the pool was a bit cold but it looked nice plus it had a good sauna, steam room and a Hugh jacuzzi. Amsterdam is a great city to visit, with lots of nice places to eat but sadly the restaurant the concierge recommended to us was below parr.

My wife and I just returned from 4 nights in Amsterdam where we stayed at the Grand Hotel Amrath. It is conveniently located a few blocks from Central Station. It is located in an old building with a lot of character and the rooms are quite modern and beautiful. The ceilings in the room must be 25 feet high and there are huge windows covered by remote controlled drapes. We had a third floor room overlooking the canal and the view was amazing. I gazed out the window in the morning watching various boats floating down the canal. The sound proofing was spot-on and we heard no noise from our neighbors. The bed was the most comfortable I have ever slept on and after long days of walking throughout the city I fell into a deep sleep in great comfort. The free mini-bar was a nice touch. Although my wife and I aren't drinkers we made use of the free bottled water and peanuts and candy. The breakfast buffet was amazing and was as good as any we have eaten in the US. The service and food selection was exceptional. The 3 concierge's we dealt with all were extremely professional and helped us to plan our days and find nice restaurants for us to enjoy dinner. I recommend going to the windmill town (I forget the dutch name) for a day trip as it is a short train ride and the views of windmills was just amazing. It also was a nice break from the craziness of the city. Do watch out for all of the bikers in the city-they come out at you from every direction. I didn't give 5 stars as we had a few minor complaints. The room had no hand towels -just bath and wash cloths -I know I may be nit picking but we could have used some. Also housekeeping could use a refresher course. We ran out of tissues and toilet paper and these items weren't restocked until we asked. Also we arrived the first day at the hotel very early at about 8:00 AM and our room wasn't ready. We were told to come back in 2 hours and we waited until 12:00PM to come back and we still had to wait another hour and a half until1:30 to get into our room. I know check-in isn't until 2:00 officially but I didn't feel as if the reception people were too sympathetic as we had been up all night traveling and were exhausted. Perhaps a few rooms should be set aside for early arrivals where they could freshen up and change their clothing. Another early arrival had the same issue as us the day we arrived. All in all it was well worth waiting for our room as we really enjoyed our stay in the hotel and in Amsterdam.

Room Tip: Get a canal view room.

We had a beautiful time at this hotel. It was very clean and provided all extras expected for a 5* such as shaving kit, dental kit etc--important if only travelling with hand luggage. The location was great not too near to the noise but close enough to walk to and enjoy!!! The breakfast was good and offered all expected hot and cold food, We had a 3 course meal at the hotel and this was beautiful. The spa facilities at the hotel are a treat and we spent 2 hours on our last day relaxing in there before we caught our flight. As it was our wedding anniversary the hotel kindly sent us a bottle of prosecco and a lovely card--a lovely surprise we also received an upgrade on our room. Overall a beautiful old mixed with the new hotel in great location offering fantastic service.

Room Tip: We had a city view which was far nicer than the other side
