“although not in the city center, yet very lively”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 9, 2014

The former shipyard area in which the hotel is located has an youthful and vibrant environment with restaurants, improvised beaches, art manifestations etcetra. There is always something new going on. The distance to the city center is no problem. In front of the hotel is the jetty from which several times per hour a ferry leaves for Amsterdam Central Station. It's free of charge and the trip by boat 10-15 minutes) provides stunning views of the harbor and city. If you book a room with a harbor view, you will have similar beautiful views from your room. The rooms are not large but comfortable. The bathroom is relatively large and well equipped. Friendly and professional staff.

Room Tip: Choose a room with harbow view because of the stunning views

Stayed here for 4 days in June and it was great! Super comfortable bed and very friendly hotel staff. Perfect location right at the ndsm dock. A 15 minute free ferry service takes you right to Centre area of Amsterdam! Would definitely stay here again!

This was our first trip to Amsterdam and we were looking for somewhere that gave value for money and relatively well-positioned to the city centre to stay, hence why we chose the 'Brooklyn Hotel'.

Although it looks far out from the centre, a 10 minute ferry ride - which is free - takes you straight to Amsterdam Centraal Station, which you can either walk through to get to the city centre or can get a train to pretty much anywhere in the Netherlands, or even Paris, Brussels or Hamburg.

It was very nice being on the north side of the city, as it did give you the feel of escaping and being able to relax a lot more, with only a 10 minute journey back in again. The ferry was very easy - walk on, walk off - and was much better than if we had stayed in the south of the city, the same distance from the centre, where we would have had to have got a tram in, which would have been a lot more hassle.

The hotel itself was very good. It only opened in March, so was still very new, and the staff were still getting used to everything when we were there; the result being that check-in was very slow.

We arrived at the hotel early, so they put our bags in a safe room and then, when we returned later, they had already put all of our baggage in our room for us, which we thought was very considerate.

Although the rooms were slightly on the small side, the view from our corner, sixth floor bedroom was fantastic, and the room itself comfortably accommodated three people, whilst still having a enough room to walk around, and being able to access the desk. However, they had not fully catered to have three people in the room, so there were only enough toiletries (plus slippers and bath robes and cups/glasses) for two people, however we had brought most of our own things anyway, so it didn't particularly bother us.

When we went, the restaurant was still being built, however the breakfast on offer was good value for 5 euros, although there was a pastry shop by the ferry terminal which sold similar things for a cheaper price.

We were given a map upon arrival of the main city part of Amsterdam, and the lady told us where the points of interest were, which was very useful. However we would have liked more information about what we could do in Amsterdam-Noord (where the hotel is), as there were a couple of restaurants/cafes nearby, as well as the Greenpeace Boat. Some history of the area would have been nice to have known about as well (i.e. why there was a half-sunken submarine by the ferry terminal).

The hotel was very clean and the cleaners were very prompt at cleaning the room whilst we were out each day, however didn't always replenish the soaps, etc.

On our final night, there was a festival nearby (we walked up and had a look; it looked very interesting, lots of families, however we didn't stay) so there was noise, however we were very impressed that we couldn't hear any of it in our room. Do bear in mind that the windows do not have reflective glass on, so you can see slightly into the lower down bedrooms when the curtains and netting are drawn back (you can still see out and get plenty of light if you leave the netting closed though).

As said before, the hotel didn't have a restaurant when we went, but we survived very well just eating out in Amsterdam - there is a really nice organic restaurant called La Place down one of the main shopping streets which we ate at twice. The ferries run late into the night (last one 11.30pm; there is then a night ferry, apparently, until about 2 o'clock in the morning). Due to the public transport from the hotel being so good, we did spend the week without a car as it is very easy to get everywhere in the Netherlands, and beyond, without one. Getting from the airport is also really easy, as you just get the train from Schiphol Airport to Amsterdam Centraal, then go out the north entrance (follow the signs with a ferry on) and catch the ferry to the hotel - this takes less than half an hour.

It would have been nice to have received an acknowledgement from the Hotel with regards to our comments on their feed back form.

Overall, we were very pleased after our stay at the Brooklyn Hotel, and plan on returning sometime in the future, as we still have much of Amsterdam to explore.

Room Tip: Request a room on a higher floor (e.g. the 6th Floor) at the front, so that you get views over the r...

If you're looking for a run of the mill hotel experience this is not for you. Sited on what was the old shipbuilding wharf, a 10 minute (free) ferry trip from the main centre of Amsterdam, there's an almost post apocalyptic feel about the area. It's not pretty nor manicured. It's raw. Now, you could take that as a negative. We found it exciting and edgy. Lots of "creatives" have homed in on the area, some working out of shipping containers, so you're quite likely to find a dancer throwing a shape or someone in yogic pose as you stroll by to the Brooklyn. An industrial crane nearby houses three luxury suites with jacuzzi. Vessels of every possible type are constantly passing - a ship spotters heaven. Great restaurant, Pleqq, nearby is also made from containers and recycled palettes abound... you get the picture. The Brooklyn was very comfortable, designer bathroom was fun. Breakfast was expensive - 4 x the price at Pleqq where I had big bowl of yoghurt, pile of fresh fruit and granola for less than 5 euros. My only moan was that our room on the first floor had zero view - just a bit of warehouse roof. I'd have loved to catch the view over the water from high in the building. Staff were very smiley and friendly. This feels like a place that is about to "happen". Right now it's on the fringe (a bit like Lidl ten years ago) but my guess is it will be mainstream before too long.

Room Tip: Ask for a high room but be aware - they wanted to charge something like an extra 30 euros per night...

This is a really nice hotel. Very nouveau. Restaurant serves breakfast and apparently starting tonight, serving dinner too. Love the fact that they will give you a bag to take on the go. Service has been at a premium. I guess I am comparing it to US hotels, which are pretty more upscale than what I have seen around here. The food was good. Rooms are very clean. I love the bed. I heard some thought the beds were too soft though. I hear checkouts are very long....which seems odd that they haven't learned how to expedite the process yet. To get to Amsterdam/Central Station you will take a ferry about 50 yards away, and it is a short 15-20 minute ferry ride. I recommend!
