This was our first trip to Amsterdam and we were looking for somewhere that gave value for money and relatively well-positioned to the city centre to stay, hence why we chose the 'Brooklyn Hotel'.

Although it looks far out from the centre, a 10 minute ferry ride - which is free - takes you straight to Amsterdam Centraal Station, which you can either walk through to get to the city centre or can get a train to pretty much anywhere in the Netherlands, or even Paris, Brussels or Hamburg.

It was very nice being on the north side of the city, as it did give you the feel of escaping and being able to relax a lot more, with only a 10 minute journey back in again. The ferry was very easy - walk on, walk off - and was much better than if we had stayed in the south of the city, the same distance from the centre, where we would have had to have got a tram in, which would have been a lot more hassle.

The hotel itself was very good. It only opened in March, so was still very new, and the staff were still getting used to everything when we were there; the result being that check-in was very slow.

We arrived at the hotel early, so they put our bags in a safe room and then, when we returned later, they had already put all of our baggage in our room for us, which we thought was very considerate.

Although the rooms were slightly on the small side, the view from our corner, sixth floor bedroom was fantastic, and the room itself comfortably accommodated three people, whilst still having a enough room to walk around, and being able to access the desk. However, they had not fully catered to have three people in the room, so there were only enough toiletries (plus slippers and bath robes and cups/glasses) for two people, however we had brought most of our own things anyway, so it didn't particularly bother us.

When we went, the restaurant was still being built, however the breakfast on offer was good value for 5 euros, although there was a pastry shop by the ferry terminal which sold similar things for a cheaper price.

We were given a map upon arrival of the main city part of Amsterdam, and the lady told us where the points of interest were, which was very useful. However we would have liked more information about what we could do in Amsterdam-Noord (where the hotel is), as there were a couple of restaurants/cafes nearby, as well as the Greenpeace Boat. Some history of the area would have been nice to have known about as well (i.e. why there was a half-sunken submarine by the ferry terminal).

The hotel was very clean and the cleaners were very prompt at cleaning the room whilst we were out each day, however didn't always replenish the soaps, etc.

On our final night, there was a festival nearby (we walked up and had a look; it looked very interesting, lots of families, however we didn't stay) so there was noise, however we were very impressed that we couldn't hear any of it in our room. Do bear in mind that the windows do not have reflective glass on, so you can see slightly into the lower down bedrooms when the curtains and netting are drawn back (you can still see out and get plenty of light if you leave the netting closed though).

As said before, the hotel didn't have a restaurant when we went, but we survived very well just eating out in Amsterdam - there is a really nice organic restaurant called La Place down one of the main shopping streets which we ate at twice. The ferries run late into the night (last one 11.30pm; there is then a night ferry, apparently, until about 2 o'clock in the morning). Due to the public transport from the hotel being so good, we did spend the week without a car as it is very easy to get everywhere in the Netherlands, and beyond, without one. Getting from the airport is also really easy, as you just get the train from Schiphol Airport to Amsterdam Centraal, then go out the north entrance (follow the signs with a ferry on) and catch the ferry to the hotel - this takes less than half an hour.

It would have been nice to have received an acknowledgement from the Hotel with regards to our comments on their feed back form.

Overall, we were very pleased after our stay at the Brooklyn Hotel, and plan on returning sometime in the future, as we still have much of Amsterdam to explore.

Room Tip: Request a room on a higher floor (e.g. the 6th Floor) at the front, so that you get views over the r...

If you're looking for a run of the mill hotel experience this is not for you. Sited on what was the old shipbuilding wharf, a 10 minute (free) ferry trip from the main centre of Amsterdam, there's an almost post apocalyptic feel about the area. It's not pretty nor manicured. It's raw. Now, you could take that as a negative. We found it exciting and edgy. Lots of "creatives" have homed in on the area, some working out of shipping containers, so you're quite likely to find a dancer throwing a shape or someone in yogic pose as you stroll by to the Brooklyn. An industrial crane nearby houses three luxury suites with jacuzzi. Vessels of every possible type are constantly passing - a ship spotters heaven. Great restaurant, Pleqq, nearby is also made from containers and recycled palettes abound... you get the picture. The Brooklyn was very comfortable, designer bathroom was fun. Breakfast was expensive - 4 x the price at Pleqq where I had big bowl of yoghurt, pile of fresh fruit and granola for less than 5 euros. My only moan was that our room on the first floor had zero view - just a bit of warehouse roof. I'd have loved to catch the view over the water from high in the building. Staff were very smiley and friendly. This feels like a place that is about to "happen". Right now it's on the fringe (a bit like Lidl ten years ago) but my guess is it will be mainstream before too long.

Room Tip: Ask for a high room but be aware - they wanted to charge something like an extra 30 euros per night...

This is a really nice hotel. Very nouveau. Restaurant serves breakfast and apparently starting tonight, serving dinner too. Love the fact that they will give you a bag to take on the go. Service has been at a premium. I guess I am comparing it to US hotels, which are pretty more upscale than what I have seen around here. The food was good. Rooms are very clean. I love the bed. I heard some thought the beds were too soft though. I hear checkouts are very long....which seems odd that they haven't learned how to expedite the process yet. To get to Amsterdam/Central Station you will take a ferry about 50 yards away, and it is a short 15-20 minute ferry ride. I recommend!

While the hotel is brand new and the location is a great alternative to out-of-the center hotel which require boring public transport transportation, instead of a ferry boat sea trip…our 4-night stay experience was spoiled!
It's the first time we were not able to get a transformer plug for the 'English plug" in a hotel! We've travelled all over Europe and it was never a problem - that is why we were never bringing one of our own. But in Brooklyn we were requested to BUY it for 10 EUROS! I begged to ‘borrow it for 5 minutes’ and was granted a permission which appeared the one time deal. The next morning I was informed that only plastic wrapped (new) plugs were left, and therefore take it (EUR10) or leave it. Shame, really...it was supposed to be a 4 star hotel...
Also, it was our first time in…maaaany years that we were requested to leave a deposit of 100 euros for possible room damages and actually it did cut us on disposable cash. The credit card activation was delayed by the bank and we explained we’ll leave the deposit later, using the card, but the receptionist insisted on getting the money here and now. We were not informed of such procedure upon booking, prior to our arrival…
Generally the service at the reception was clumsy and slow, the receptionists were getting irritated with the customers, cause they could not cope with the requests promptly and were etting nervous about too many questions asked (and the staff talked all the time to each other in front of the client in a language, I suppose, most of the customers do not understand (at least we did not) – very rude; or ask a client to wait cause a receptionist trainee needs and explanation about using the front desk management program). Once, the reception desk was even empty and I've been waiting 5 minutes for someone to come at last. And lastly - we've requested a wake-up call on our departure day. Never got one, even with some delay. We were close to losing our flight because of this unacceptable negligence.
Disappointing service…

Dear Luliia U,

First of all we would like to thank you for your constructive feedback.

We are delighted to read you enjoyed your ferry trip!

I am very disappointed to read that we were not able to give you a true “Brooklyn” experience. On behalf of the Brooklyn Team, we would like to apologize for these discomforts. I appreciate it that you shared your concerns with us, and it is our genuine hope that you will give us the opportunity to better serve you in the near future.

I am sorry to hear that you felt this way during check-in. It is our standard procedure that our guests pay this amount as deposit for extra charges like room service and minibar.

I have taken your remark very seriously and shared it with our team.

I hope that you will not judge us solely on this experience and that we may welcome you again in the near future as well to guarantee you we take your comment seriously and we would like to let you experience our improvements.

If you are planning to visit Amsterdam again in the future please contact me directly for your reservation thru nick@brooklynhotel.nl, and we will ensure you will get the real “Brooklyn experience”!

Kind regards,

Nick Weijers

Our room had a plush carpet, modern furniture and fittings, good WiFi, fridge, a modern bathroom and an enormous flat screen TV with lots of English TV channels. Our coffee and tea making facilities even included a Nespresso machine and there were floor-to-ceiling windows with magnificent views. The bed was super comfortable and the shower was fantastic. The staff were very helpful and friendly and our room was spotlessly every day.

We spent hours on the internet trying to find reasonably priced accommodation in a good location in Amsterdam. The Brooklyn Hotel is only 3 km away from the train station but the catch is that it's a 10 minute ferry (scenic and free) ride away across the IJ River in the old docklands/warehousing district. The area immediately around the hotel is very industrial with warehouse buildings, cranes and concrete car parks. There are a few eating options but they are a little pricey so it's cheaper to eat in town.

It's really good value - it was going to cost us more money to stay in a windowless box near the Southern train station! This was a fantastic option for us - a much better location and a much better room.

The hotel is lovely inside and out. My family and I had a good time during our 5 days in Amsterdam. Free ferry to reach to hotel but beware the ferry service wont start till 930am in the weekend which was a bit nightmare to us for catching our flight early .

Staff was very helpful and attentive. However, staff needed to explain more clearly about charging us €250 for our 2 rooms when we checked in to hotel. There WAS NO explanation why and if the money was going to refund to us when we checked out from the hotel.

When we were checking out from the hotel, a male staff dealth with us, he wasnt very patient and I only asked him when I am going to get my €250 back, he attitude wasnt the best and he was talking to other member of staff about I kept chasing about my money back and i think this Was TOTALLY Unprofessional. VERY DISAPPOINTED, it actually ruined my whole holiday at the end! He needed to understand why customers kept asking about the money because there was no explanation why they were charging me at the first place!
