“Perfect Location, Almost Perfect Hotel!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 7, 2013

Have just returned from a 3 night stay at NL Leidseplien and would definatley recommend it to anyone planning a break in Amsterdam!

On the whole the hotel was great! As mentioned in some other reviews to location is perfect, just behind Leidseplein, walking distance to all the main attactions and areas but also just far enough away from the hussle and bussle of the main leidseplein square. I would also agree with previous comments on how friendly and helpful the staff at this hotel are. Over our stay we came across 4 different staff members on reception and each and every one of them when out of their way to helpful, polite and make sure you had everything you needed, be it directions, advice, whatever! We booked a room with a canal view and would also recommend this. The room was beautifully decorated and a good size with great views of the canal.

I want to respond to 2 of the main criticisms I'd seen on reviews before travelling. Firstly, the stairs, yes they are steep - you are in Amsterdam, staying in a townhouse! If your so against steep staircases I suggest you consider another city! Secondly, the bathrooms, Yes there is no curtain on the shower and yes there are only glass doors seperating the room and toilet but these are frosted and although this may not be to everyone's taste have stayed in many other european hotels that adopt a similar approach. If you're staying in a double room with someone you should really be comfortable enough with each other to get over this!

A couple of slight quibbles stopped the review being 5 star. On our 2nd day we had an issue with our hot water. In the morning it was only luke warm but didnt think too much of this as we were late up after a heavy night so just thought the tank may be refilling however by our evening showers it was stone cold.We reported this to reception who called a plumber straight away and normal service was resumed for the following morning! My only other quibble was with the tea and coffee facilities in the room, this only gave powdered milk rather than normal - just my personal taste though!

On the whole though a great little hotel! If your looking for somewhere with character and the personal touch rather than a generic chain then definatley book here!

Room Tip: Choose a canal view room - we had room 12 - perfect!

Staff very friendly and helpful but the superior canal view room we booked had already been given to another couple! Initially shown to a tiny, back facing room but then moved to a slightly larger one and given 10% discount and free breakfast to compensate for booking error. Breakfast was good and hotel spotless. Really weird bathroom in both rooms with glass window doors which don't close and separate the toilet from the bed literally next to it. Not at all ideal or romantic when squeezing out a poo!

We stayed for 5 nights at this hotel. The staff was very friendly and the room was nice however the hotel and the rooms have some downsided. starting with the good things: the location is not bad, it's about 4 minutes walk from Leidsplein, where you can find a lot of restaurants, bars and also public transport to the Central Station and the Dam area. The staff of the hotel was very friendly and helpful. The room was clean and tidy, we had bottles of water when we checked in, and a Nespresso machine. Upon check in we got upgraded to a regular first floor room for free instead of getting the basement room. We had a window with a view to the canal which was great. Now, to the downsides- The staircase is like in every house in Holland- really difficult to climb, especially with luggage- we had to climb only one floor (approx. 25 stairs), can't imagine what it's like to be on the second floor... The shower was the main thing that bothered us. First of all it has no doors so everytime you shower the whole bathroom floor is flooded. Second the stream was very week and we couldn't manage to get the shower head to stay up so we had to hold it. All in all it was OK, But I'm not sure if I will stay there again.

Room Tip: the view from the window is nice, ask for a canal view

This grand, old hotel is situated right in the heart of Amsterdam, just around the corner from the famous canals. The staff are incredible friendly and helpful and nothing was too much trouble. Some of the rooms have had a re-vamp. Given the history of the hotel, the ultra modern decor of these rooms doesn't feel quite right! They are very comfortable however and also very clean.

This is a great hotel if you're on business or just visiting the city of Amsterdam as a tourist. Would recommend.

We were only in Amsterdam for a long weekend to celebrate our Ruby Wedding Anniversary. This hotel may be small in size, but is HUGE on hospitality and customer service. On arrival, the gentleman on reception could not do enough to help us, he was very friendly, helpful and had a great sense of humour.

Our room was on the first floor. The room was small but not cramped, we had all we needed including tea/coffee making facilities, t.v. and hairdryer. The room itself was tastefully decorated and spotlessly clean. The bedding and towels were snow white and soft, The bathroom was also spotlessly clean and we loved the glass doors, we found them quite quirky.

After a days sightseeing we arrived back at the hotel to find that a tray of chocolates had been placed in our room, we found this to be a lovely gesture. A different gentleman on the reception desk booked a restaurant for us, this was so kind of him.

The cost of our stay was 300 euros, very good value for money.

We only spent 2 nights in this lovely hotel, but we will definitely return. This hotel was perfect for our needs, but most of all the hospitality and service we received that make it such a pleasant and memorable experience. A huge thank you to all at the NL.

Room Tip: Rooms on the upper floors at the back are quieter.

Having stayed in the city on half a dozen occasions my husband and myself have never had an issue with any of the hotels we have stayed in, this particular hotel however changed all that.
When we arrived we were led down what could only be described as the stairway to hell, the steepest descent i have ever personally encountered for stairs and with no hand rail and suitcases in tow we were lucky not to have broken our necks before we even got to our room.
The stairs were the nicest part.
The room was like a dungeon. Dark dingy and reeking of damp and urine.
It had plastic floors, was cold with no working heating and had a barred in window looking out to peoples feet on the street.
The bottom of the walls were covered in rising damp, even with every light switched on the place was still dark.
The "bathroom" barely located a foot from the bed did not even have a door but a glass partition which meant that i personally had to hold all bowel movements for our four day stay as the room being tiny as stinking as it was who wants to take a crap while their husband is sitting a foot away from you on the bed.
The bed, what a joke that was, was the lumpiest and most uncomfortable thing I've ever had the misfortune to lie upon, but that was the least of our worries considering the fact the sheets were ripped, the cushions had unidentified stains on them and there was a centipede living on my bedside table, not to mention and army of silverfish living in the bathroom.
All in all a dump, you couldn't pay me to set foot in the place again.
Oh yeah and if all of the above wasn't bad enough the room was directly located under reception meaning there was the constant racket of what could only be described as a heard of elephants.

Room Tip: Don't stay here, have no clue what their other rooms are like but you take the risk of ending up...

My wife and I stayed here 1 night on the front end of a river cruise. Great location relative to walking to many of the Amsterdam sights, shopping, and restaurants. Room was small and hot. Staff was indifferent and we waited 3 hours for our room.
Breakfast was very good.
We paid $400 Cdn for the room which, in my opinion, was not good value for what we received.
