We had a great time in the Netherlands, and a good part of the credit goes to this wonderful hotel, the Movenpick. We stayed there for four nights. They were kind enough to help us out by finding a room for us on Queen's Day!!!!
The hotel is clean, the employees very nice. The food in their restaurant is expensive, however there is a nice place on the dock a few meters toward Amsterdam with good food and reasonable prices.
While the Movenpick is not in the center of town, (we were somewhat happy about that, especially around Queens' Day) it is very accessible via the Tram # 26, ( runs very frequently, takes about six minutes to get there from Station Centraal). Read Rick Steves. When you arrive buy at least the part of the IAmsterdam pass that gets you on the buses and trams...best deal in the world. We bought a three day pass, but you can customize that to your plans.
The Dutch were very helpful, friendly, and really organized when it came to managing what we were exposed to. A majority of the Dutch speak English. Downside...look out for pickpockets in the crowds. Use a money belt. We took public transportation to De Hoge Veluwe, a national park, a wonderful place, google it....and to the Keukenhof, highlights of our trip.
