Having taken previous trips to Amsterdam and done all the usual touristy things, my friends and I hoped to get a different feel for this wonderful city. The 3 of us (All female in our mid 30's) spent the weekend at the clean, comfortable and stylish Movenpick Hotel which is just one tram stop along the harbour from Centraal Station. The hotel was excellent value for money and the staff extremely courteous. We agree that we would definitely stay there again.
Eating out in the city can be very expensive. We wanted to find somewhere that provided fresh, tasty local produce at reasonable prices. We most definitely found this in La Place. Just visiting is an experience in itself. There are stands offering fresh uncooked foods which you choose from and the staff cook in front of you to your liking. We especially liked the stir fry stand where we each filled a bowl with veg of our choice, picked a meat (Or prawns) and this was stir fried for us with option of sauces. I had mine with noodles and took a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice. This came to a little over 10euros. Food can be eaten up or downstairs in the airy eating areas.
Having tried various coffee shops on previous visits, we were very impressed by Barney's. On one side of the road there is Barney's coffe shop where people can smoke and drink soft /hot drinks and on the other is Barney's licensed cafe bar serving delicious snacks. We went on Sat evening and enjoyed cocktails and DJ playing RnB. People brought their own smoke and it was a really atmospheric and chilled evening...well worth a visit.
