My wife and I stayed here over Easter weekend, as Amsterdam was the only place we could think of in Europe that would still have most stores and attractions open over the holidays. We booked the hotel on Priceline about a month in advance, using [--] to give us an idea of what price we could get. At 85 Euros per night over a holiday weekend, we thought this was quite lucky...I saw the prices just before the weekend, and they were several times as much.
The Moevenpick is easy to get to from Centraal Station. The easiest way is simply to walk. Head East from the station and follow the coast...the Moevenpick looks just like the picture on its website, and is very easy to spot once you hit the harbor. The second thing to do is to take the #25 (to PTA) or #26 (to IJBurg) tram and get off at the first stop. These trams run every 15 minutes apiece and stop in front of the hotel. However, since there is a canal in between the tram line and the hotel, you'll have to walk an awkward route for another 5 minutes to get there.
The staff at the Moevenpick were very friendly. We arrived 2 hours before our 3 pm check-in and they gave us a room. The hotel is only 2 years old, so it has a very modern look with great furniture. The rooms were very clean and quiet. They were also larger than any 'standard' room I had stayed in while in Amsterdam.
A few pluses and minuses:
PLUSES
--Location. Its away from the action, so its very quiet. As I'm no longer in my 20's and out for a raucous time, this was a plus. If you catch the tram as it pulls into Centraal Station, you're just minutes away from the hotel.
--Elevators. Amazingly fast and efficient. A minor thing that was a nice touch.
--Staff. Really seemed to go out of their way to be friendly. Alex and Mohammad, in particular, were a credit to Moevenpick.
--Shuttle. They have a shuttle van that goes to Centraal every 30 minutes. If you're going there, you need to sign up, as they only have 8 spaces per trip. If you're getting picked up, there usually isn't a need to sign up. If you happen to be leaving the hotel at the top of the hour, its very convenient.
--Non-smoking. The entire hotel was non-smoking, which we both personally liked.
MINUSES
--Location. Its away from the action, so its very quiet. As I was trying to pretend I was in my 20's again, this was a double-edged sword.
--Phone assistance. I had to call the Front Desk a few times during my stay, and each time it took at least 15 rings for someone to answer. They need more dedicated staff.
--No robes, and the towels were pretty flimsy. Invest in better towels, Moevenpick!
Overall, it was a very nice stay and I would return if the price was right.
