“Amsterdam modernity”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 12, 2013

We enjoyed a leisurely evening stroll east along Piet Heinkade that begins adjacent to Central Station. It is in such contrast with central Amsterdam and the canal side houses.

Soon in view were the ultra modern Muziekgebouw and Bimhuis. We crossed the pedestrian bridge and walked around the adjoining waterfront. We had marvellous views of all the surrounding harbour areas.

The high rise Movenpick Hotel is very impressive, framed against the evening sky. Alongside is the splendid Amsterdam Passenger Terminal catering for the numerous cruise ships calling to this popular city.

Using our tram passes we hopped on the No 26 and took it all the way to the terminus at Iburg. On the way it passed through a number of tunnels. After a walk around this rather typical suburb we took a 26 back to Central Station.

“Architecture and waterscapes of high quality”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 24, 2012

I live in the Eastern Docklands and am still enjoying every minute there. Particularly Java & KNSM islands have been redeveloped with surprising and high quality buildings (check out 'Barcelona' and the 'Whale') and offer wondeful views over the water. The view from the top of Java Island and the Jan Schaefer bridge is of exceptional quality; come here with sunset for full effect. The Oostelijke Handelskade and other areas beyond (Borneo Island, Sporenburg) complement with a mixture of modern architecture and some old remainders of the maritime past (the Lloyd Hotel etc). After spending some 2 hours walking here you could try to cross the Schellingwouderbrug (some 1,5 km away) to check out the contract with the quiet polder landscape of Waterland or you could go across the Jan Schaeferbrug towards Artis and the Plantage area for a nice contract with 19th century architecture.
