This was the first time I'd ever stayed in a hostel and it was so bad I'm surprised it didn't put me off hostels forever. I travelled in a group of seven and it was pretty much impossible to try and negotiate a room for all of us, even though the hostel had space.
The floors were dirty, the bathrooms so small you couldn't even turn around in them, and the showers absolutely filthy. One of my friends had his suitcase bitten into by some sort of creature. Luckily the kitchen didn't charge for renting pots and pans, so we were able to save money by cooking for ourselves.
By far the worst aspect of our stay was our encounters with the manager, who is downright rude and uncooperative. I feel quite bad because other staff were lovely and helpful.
The upside of choosing this hostel is that you're near tourist attractions such as the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum. You're also right next to the Concertgebouw, which is handy when you've just arrived in Amsterdam and have no idea where you're supposed to be going. And of course, there's an Albert Heijn supermarket right across the street.
