Stayed on Prinsen Boat for 1 week in June 2007. Made the arrangements with Peter, owner, by e-mail. Wired him a deposit and paid the balance on arrival. He was very easy to communicate with and gave us perfect directions to arrive quickly and easily from the airport. The houseboat is in an excellent location. An upscale residential neighborhood where we felt perfectly safe and comfortable. Many restaurants and bars were within a very short walk and there is plenty of fun people watching. Houseboat was clean and looks pretty close to what photos promise. It could use a little TLC but was comfortable and did have internet which was a really great convenience. Had a lovely, large picture window facing the canal and we spent a lot of the evening watching tons of boats go by. Trolleys are right outside and its a very easy city to get around. Everyone spoke english and were extremely friendly and accommodating. Every attraction is easy to find. Our only regret is that we didn't rent a bike or take a bike tour. It would have been a great experience but we chickened out! The amount of bikes is overwhelming and we thought it would be too difficult but after we got used to seeing them everywhere, we realized it would have been cool. Food is easy to find and reasonable. Had an excellent vacation. A week was a perfect amount of time to spend there. Really liked Amsterdam and other parts of Holland. Would definitely return.

We stayed on the Prinsen Boat as the last leg of our two week trip to Europe and were enchanted. It couldn't have been easier to find (Peter gave excellent directions) and we stepped off the tram and were surprised at how close the house boat was ( a few feet) and yet totally quiet at night and morning ( we weren't home during midday). The boats passing by didn't disturb us at all. We were hoping it wouldn't be like staying on a freeway and weren't disappointed. Our two families of ducks kept us amused in the mornings and ate right out of our hands. Peter was very informative and kindly waited as our plane had been delayed for a few hours and we had no way to let him know. The location couldn't be beat, it's within walking or tramming distance to all of central Amsterdam. For English-only speakers, Amsterdam is so easy and Peter (like most Amsterdamers) speaks it perfectly so we didn't have any problems asking where to eat or shop. I'd highly recommend staying on Prinsen Boat for any travel to Amsterdam to anyone wanting a self reliant (no room service), self paced, comfortable stay.

  • Liked — location on the water in central amsterdam
  • Disliked — no bedroom door and traveling with my partner's sister

We stayed on the houseboat for 3 nights and would highly recommend it for a great experience in Amsterdam. It is close to just about everything (including a tram stop) in a very nice neighborhood and very peaceful at night. The grocery store is a short walk and there are many cafes nearby if you don't want to cook. The houseboat was very comfortable with a nice kitchen and bathroom (great shower too) and it's fun to be right on the water. We even had a family of ducks visit us every morning and many boats passing on the canal for entertainment. Peter was easy to communicate with and his niece met us at the boat when we arrived; there was even a bottle of wine waiting for us. We rented bikes from Mike's Bikes and it is the best way to get around the city. Have fun!

  • Liked — novelty of a houseboat

All around a very good experience. We booked our trip at the last minute and as we frantically emailed nearly every hotel and apartment Peter from the Prinsenboat emailed us saying that he had space. From the very beginning he made the experience pleasant with an easy and laid back reservation process.

Upon arrival we were impressed by the property and its cleanliness. Peter immediately got us supplies and groceries and showed us everything we needed to know. Peter was very clear to point out that the heat worked very well (which I suppose means that on other houseboats it does not) which was true.

Having been to Amsterdam many times I have to say that coming home to the Prinsenboat was charming. The neighborhood bars don't feel touristy and the location is close to pretty much everything if you know where you're going and it makes you feel a little more "local" than a hotel or even apartment. I would stay here again.

What a unique experience? We literally lived centemeters above the surface of the Prinsengraat Canal in a cosy and clean house boat for two nights and two days. Being very central to most attractions of Amsterdam and close to coffee shops, delis and bars helped us spend our short stay efficiently. While central, the location was very peaceful when needed and quite lively througout the more active hours of the day, allowing us to experience the full buzz of the city.
The attitudes of locals proved to be quite polite and friendly and the landlord, Peter, was fantastic. Breakfast and a lovely bottle of wine was supplied and flowers was arranged by Peter for our arrival.
We would definitely recommend to stay at The Prinsen Boat as the service, location and experience was something we will remember.
