“3 nights stay - Awful”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 28, 2014

This is my genuine opinion following my stay. 1st of all, you will be asked to pay the cost of your stay + approx 20 euros of city tax (which is normal) Secondly, you will have to leave a deposit of 10 euros for the room key. Not necessary as I can assure you the door could just be kicked down with a push kick. Stayed in room 15 which is meant to accommodate two. Bunk bed is dirty, no side table, chair, shelves or proper lighting. "Bathroom" is a 3 in 1 facility as you can pee, wash and brush teeth at the same time. There is nothing which separates or gives clear space between the sink and the toilet. Terribly dirty and disgusting smell coming from the toilet. Would not recommend for families or couples. Only for young and uncaring people.

Room Tip: If possible, ask to see the room before you get one allocated. Do not accept room 15 as it is likely...

I booked for one bed in a 4 bed room and paid 50 euros per night as it was last minute.

The public spaces had not been cleaned for quite a while and everything was very old.
The room was small (not enough space to even open the suitcase) and the bathroom was filthy. I have served in the army but Sarphati's dirtiness made the army look like a joke!

The breakfast is basic (bread, peanut butter, jam and coffee/tea).

The upside is that the staff is polite and friendly and the location is good.

As a synopsis, the experience was quite disheartening given the extremely low quality of the infrastructure as well as its lack of maintenance, which could not be offset by the good manners of the receptionists.

I would not recommend this hostel and if you end up staying there be forewarned; at least ask to see your room before prepaying 100% of your fees.

I stayed 2 nights at the hostel and my first impression when I entered into the place was about a lack of cleaness. There was a strong bad smell, the carpets were really dirty, the room's floor was sticky, as the tiny little bathroom. The blankets were broken and I had to ask for a pillow change. All this experience for a cost of 80 euros for two nights.

For a start the title is misleading because by no means is this hostel a hotel. I stayed for 3 nights over New year's eve, paying 200 Euro for a bed in a 10 man dorm. If you can't handle being in a room with lots of people who you don't know then obviously this size dorm isn't suitable for you. The people I shared with liked to get stoned all day and then go to bed so the lights were off and the room stank the majority of the time. The staff are ok, speak English. They have a few good tips on where things are and what to do in Amsterdam. The WiFi worked fine, it is what it is, a hostel with a bed, simple.

Room Tip: Don't get the 10 man room.

Located quite far from the lively city but trams can easily bring you everywhere. Staff are friendly and helpful. The room is really so small and it is difficult to climb in the double deck bed. The stairs are too narrow. There is no locker, no wifi, and very limited electrical outlets. Breakfast is free and so simple. Just enough for backpackers on a tight budget.

Nice location, across the street from relatively unknown Sarphati Park, and it sits right near the center. The rooms are clean, and you get a "Dutch" breakfast of unlimited PB and J's and coffee. The rooms are standard bunks, clean and well kept. The dining room is really nice, but you have to make breakfast for that.

The staff is cool, laid back, and helpful. They also are ready to give you specific tips if you need. The unique thing about this place is its location in the Pijp and close proximity to Albert Cuyp market.

The Pijp is the local hot neighborhood, with bars and vintage clothing shops and record shops. Its a funky area, with a less touristy feel.

The Albert Cuyp market is massive, stretching endlessly, offering all kinds of wares and food, with good quality, relative to the many outdoor markets in Amsterdam proper.

This place certainly provides the basics at a nice price, in a surprisingly cool location that you might not otherwise happen by over the course of a short visit.

Room Tip: no worries, its a quiet area, all good
