We stayed at Barangay the last two weeks of September 2006. We chose this BnB based on other TripAdvisor reviews and the Barangay website, and we were not disappointed.
First, the location: Barangay is extremely close (4-5 minute walk) to Amsterdam Centraal Station. This is fantastic because: 1) who wants to drag luggage all over Amsterdam? and 2) easy to catch trams, buses and international trains. Barangay is close enough to Damrak/Red Light district so you don't feel like you're missing any action, but quiet at night. The Jordaan is a few blocks away, and there are many extremely tasty Indonesian/Argentine/Indian/noodle houses right around the corner.
Now, Barangay itself: Clean, welcoming and festively decorated island-style. We debated between the breakfast-in-bed lower rooms, or the do-it-yourself breakfast that comes with the Upper Tropical rooms. We ended up staying one night downstairs due to a snafu, and the rest of our (really, very long) stay in an Upper Tropical room. I would recommend the do-it-yourself breakfast, upper rooms since they are larger and you can get up and ready to go at your own pace. On the other hand, our one experience with the breakfast-in-bed was pretty satisfying - someone's a good cook.
The caveats: the upper tropical rooms share a bathroom. It's quite large and cleaned every day, but mornings can get busy if you wake at the same time as your neighbor. Also, upper tropical rooms are up three flights of very narrow stairs, so pack light or get ready for a workout.
Wimmo and Godwin are great hosts and their enthusiasm shows. As another reviewer noted, Wimmo will provide a map and orient you when you check in, as well as provide suggestions for where to go and what to see. Wimmo and Godwin are available most of the time to answer questions or give advice.
During our stay, Wim and God printed out e-tickets for us for the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh musuem, which is a convenient way to avoid lines. If you get a chance, also take Wim's recommendation for a canal boat tour - it's a private tour (two, maybe up to four people) for two hours with personalized attention and drinks included.
