“My birthday treat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 22, 2014

Just returned home tonight from an absolute cracker of a surprise weekend away staying at Barangay B &B in Central Amsterdam
My wife found it on the internet and where do I start , on arrival we where given a really warm welcome and a free drink whilst booking in :)
Our room was beautiful , we stayed in one of the patio rooms, full of individual touch and thought
We had breakfast in bed both mornings and it was more like work of art as well as good food.
Position wise for exploring you could not get better, easy to find and slap bang in the middle so nothing too far
Thank you to the boys for making our stay so good and we will be over to stay again :)

Ian and Jayne

Room Tip: Patio room just gives that little extra touch

Hola IAN & JAYNE.
Thanks for staying with us and taking the time to write a lovely review.
We are indeed the B&B boys..... our lives centered on giving a different type of accommodation/experience in Amsterdam. We are very happy to differentiate ourselves from other b&bs by providing the best service we can.
Our deco is tropical-inspired in the middle of cold Amsterdam... he eh hehe !!!
For those who want to experience our world famous ( or as ian & jayne mentioned - artwork ) breakfasts in bed, then book via barangay.nl and choose the PATIO ROOM in a Classic Amsterdam house with steep winding stairs included.
Location is best, in the middle of the UNESCO World Heritage Site and almost all attractions within a short leisurely walk and yet, on a very quiet street.
For those who find breakfasts in bed to be decadent ( h ehe he ), then book an upper room and you enjoy breakfasts in our lovely kitchen which is self-service with loads of goodies to choice from.
We hope to see & show our B&B to new guests as a result of this wonderful review.
Tropical regards, wimmo, eds & godxxx

My husband and I were looking for a room near the station, due to an early morning train schedule, and found Barangay. It was perfect! Wimmo welcomed us warmly and gave us a map with all the salient areas marked. The retro music and eclectic decor made us feel right at home. Although there is no elevator, the spiraling stairs introduced us to the charms of the beautiful buildings in the Nederlands. We had the Red room on the third floor with our own very modern bathroom. A rain shower! I loved it. The shutters opened out over the neighboring balconies and rooftops. We even had swan towels on our bed when we arrived, as well as coffee/tea maker in the room. Very thoughtful. The breakfast room is the most charming one I have ever seen in our travels. Lovely china and place settings. A complete kitchen at our disposal with a stocked fridge and huge basket of fresh breads. Live orchids in our room and the breakfast room. We had a key to come and go as we pleased and the breakfast area was open before its regular time for us to use before we slipped out to catch our train. The entrance is charming, as well, with flower boxes and greenery. We highly recommend this B&B to anyone visiting Amsterdam.

Room Tip: If you need an elevator, ask for one of the ground floor rooms. Go to their website and read about...

Thanks for staying with us and taking the time to write a lovely review.
We try our very best indeed to differentiate us from other b&bs and from hotels especially. It is not your out of the box kind of accommodation.
As mentioned, our deco is tropical inspired and almost all our guests really like it indeed. For some it might be a bit out of the ordinary. As mentioned in this review, better be ready with our deco and stairs. Check our website indeed.
All rooms have private bathrooms either ensuite or external private. If you want to choose your own room, dont forget to book directly via our site, barangay.nl !!
Location-wise, it is indeed hard to beat. As mentioned, our breakfasts kitchen is self-service and there is loads of choices to make.
We hope to see & show our B&B to new guests as a result of this wonderful review.

The location was good, near main train station and able to walk to most major attractions or take tram. The B & B owners were very nice. Our room was ok, a bit small and noisy as it was across from the breakfast room and could hear tenants above us.

We stayed at the Barangay for 3 nights in late May. While doing research, I kept coming back to this place... maybe it was the cats calling me... We were in the Buddha Room which had a small Buddha alter up a few stairs and a large bathroom down a few stairs. The room had everything we needed and while it was warm in the room, we kept the window open most of the time which was just perfect... hearing the rain tapping on the roof.

On our way in, Wimmo brought my heavy suitcase up the stairs. The stairs are steep but part of the Dutch experience in my mind. I loved the fact that Wimmo outlined where in the city to go and where to avoid. Because he mapped the area out, we saw a lot of really neat streets/sights that we might not have seen otherwise, which just made the visit all the better. My husband and I loved the street just behind the B&B, as well as the whole area. Very centrally located and super close to the train station.

The "self service" breakfast kitchen was lovely and most mornings was able to have a nice conversation with both owners. It was a great way to start the morning. Another fantastic part of the stay, is the fact that all the decoration is just right... over the top but in a cool artistic way. Not boring or dull like some other B&B's I looked at. Plus the prices were right for what we were looking for and I appreciate the human element of the guys, not jacking up prices during certain times of the year just because they can, as other hotels do. I loved this place for so many reasons and would stay again if we get back to Amsterdam.

Wow... nice to hear that you we were able to make your stay in Amsterdam more memorable. Such kind words that keep us going for the past 15 years. It is never boring to read the reviews and most importantly, a lovely acknowledgement for all the ( hard ??) works that we put our heart and soul.
As one of our guests once said..... this place is full of love. And indeed, our love for Barangay and our guests has been our motto in making this endeavour a very pleasant one.
As mentioned, we had been very lucky to be able to run a b&b in the best location of the city, where our street is quiet but just around the corner, the best shopping streets and tourist attractions can be enjoyed leisurely.
Lots of thanks for making time in writing you experience with barangay and for sharing it to our future guests.
We hope to see you again. Tropical regards,
Wimmo & Godxxx

My wife and I spent three nights at Barangay in May 2014 and recommend it those looking for good location, positively different decor of room, and a top notch breakfast, which in our case was served in our room. The host was helpful and informative (buying tickets to museums via internet to avoid lineups at entrance was one very useful bit of advice; using buses to move about town was another).
Barangay is located in a very quiet neighbourhood, yet around the corner and up a short block is Haarlem St (my translation of the proper Dutch name) with its restaurants and bars. It's only a 10 minute walk from Central Train Station.
Would recommend it to anyone who doesn't mind a free roaming, gentle black cat sharing common areas and who can manage a flight of those tight little stairs common to older dutch homes.
We would gladly stay there again.

Aloha....
Thanks for your lovely review. We are very happy to know that you had an enjoyable stay with us. We are indeed a very quiet neighbourhood and yet, totally in the middle of the historic centre of Amsterdam, within the UN World Heritage Site.
You stayed in one of the Patio Rooms and had our world famous breakfast in bed :) indeed. Also as mentioned, the patio room are the only room where our 2 very sweet cats has access if you open your room to them. If you are allergic, no worries... you can always just close you bedroom door and they would not be able to go in the room.
Again, thanks for taking the time and for making a part of your Amsterdam Experience.
Hope to see you again very soon. Tropical regards, godxxx

This is my 5th trip to Amsterdam and 2nd staying at the Barangay. I visited previous with my partner and returned with a friend after such a wonderful experience the first time. We were greeted by Wimmo who served us up a nice drink upon arrival and pointed out some of the attractions of the city and nice bars/areas in detail on a map. We frequented the sky bar regularly given the lovely weather so thank you for the recommendation although we did not manage to find the city beach ha. Wimmo then showed us to our room which was a patio room with separate bathroom right next door which was exclusive to us. The room was beautifully decorated with a relaxing patio area to sit out at with a sky light to let the daytime sunshine in when possible. We were also provided with kimono robes we took full advantage of using. The room had a fridge, tv, tea/coffee facilities a table and chairs both indoor and outdoor, hairdryer, wardrobe and cabinet space and extremely comfortable beds. A bonus of the patio room was the exceptional breakfast in bed served at a time of you choosing. Our first morning consisted of fresh fruit, cereals, juices, coffee and a lovely cooked omelette. The second morning we were served pancakes, fresh fruit, yoghurts, cereals, juices which were also delightful. I feel it's unfair for people to pass comment on the steep stairs, this is a given in the majority of buildings within the city which people should know in advance, and can hardly be deemed a criticism of our wonderful hosts or there beautiful home, especially when they are happy to carry your luggage up or down stairs for you should they be difficult to negotiate. We were not leaving the city until late on our last day, our hosts were happy to allow us longer to check out and also store our luggage for later collection providing us with a key to come and go as we pleased despite the fact technically our time as guests was up, this for me just sums up the best customer care I've ever had staying at a guest house, in fact anywhere and believe me I've travelled the globe far and wide. I don't have any negatives I can say about the Barangay, I would maybe suggest a fan in the room for the warmer climate maybe a nice added feature for guests but otherwise this is a home away from home ran with love, care, attention to detail and hosts who clearly go the extra mile. Gentleman thank you once again for helping make my stay in your city memorable yet again and dare I say it again? I'll be back...

Aloha .... tropical greetings from almost tropical Amsterdam.... he ehh e. Well, at least it is always tropical inside our B&B, rain or shine, winter or summer.
About that, Amsterdam can sometimes be warm.... like 3 days in a year and as suggested, we do have fans available on request. These are not in the room but it is in our storage area in order to have more space in the room.

We are very very happy to read this extensive review about our b&b.... not only detailed review about the room, facilities but also about us. Also, thanks for mentioning the stairs as a lot of people might still not know about it. Indeed, we have steep traditional Amsterdam stairs and we could not change it as we are a listed/heritage/monument building. It is however part of your unforgettable Amsterdam/Barangay experience.

Thanks a million for taking the time in writing and of course a billion thanks for staying with us again. We hope to see you very very soon. Much appreciated for telling the world about us and raving for all the services we offer. Rest assured we will continue to do our very best to keep giving love our guests rightfully deserved.

Tropical greetings,
Wimmo, Edson & Godxxx

B and B Barangay and it's owner hosts are very deserving of their long list of accolades. We are a senior couple who spent 9 nights there in May. Wonderful location. Wonderful service and hospitality. Wonderful breakfasts. We even had wonderful weather. Wimmo watches the radar, intently, for the benefit of his guests. By the way, the other guests were amiable and everyone enjoyed the conversations in the kitchen/breakfast room, admittedly, me especially. Oh yes, the stairs, unavoidable in historic Amsterdam, but worth the short climb to escape the cold blandness of chain hotels. The hosts will help you book the rooms with the least stairs, if you e-mail your needs and use their website. We love this place and almost would keep it a secret, but the boys deserve to keep it fully booked and they do. We can't wait to return to Amsterdam and B and B Barangay.

sawasdee. aloha....
we are very happy to know that you enjoyed your stay with us. we also enjoyed your little chats, especially during the morning breakfasts with the other guests. it was fun to hear the different stories each guest has to tell. it is also of curiosity that guests staying for a couple of days has totally different amsterdam experience that our guests staying longer than 5 nights.
loads of museums for Stephen... we think he has seen more that all of us here in Barangay combined... he ehhehe. And of course, you enjoyed your lazy mornings and rest at your tropical & buddhist inspired room.
Wimmo is indeed always making sure that all the guests get what they deserved and also checking the rooms constantly.... he love doing it.
our location is very close to the central station and at the same away from the maddening crowds.
we hope to continue giving the nicest service that our guests deserved.
again, a million thanks for staying at barangay and making time writing a super review.
