The apartment in the Jordaan is very traditionally Dutch. Narrow winding staircase and all! The house has been very nicely renovated inside though, so all the mod cons work beautifully. There are a couple of requirements from a holiday accommodation - secure, clean, safe - and Eric ticks all the boxes. Plus he's a really nice guy who puts in a bit of extra effort, to make his guests really feel at home. Very nice to have the breakfast supplies ready in the fridge on arrival.

The location is excellent - away from bars and late night clubs, so you can sleep, but close enough that the centre is easily reached on foot. There is also a tram line and a bus route nearby, so no problems getting around Nice market literally around the corner one day - provided some fabulous deli food for a casual lunch.

Definitely would recommend.

This review is strictly for the "Canal House." My wife and I just returned from a stay at Eric's. We thoroughly loved it. The location is great! The property is really, really cool and unique. Beware! If you are not fit or have any mobility issues, the stairs will probably be problematic, to say the least. But, if can handle the stairs, the B&B is one of the coolest places you will ever stay. Great location! Casa Peru is a very nice restaurant located next door. Close to Anne Frank House. Amstersdam is completely accessible from this location. The bed in the unit is a little uneven and might be uncomfortable for some, but all in all we absolutely loved this place.
Tip: Addresses In Amsterdam can be a little confusing even for the local cabdrivers. If you can pin point the location on your smart phone (Look for Casa Peru Restaurant...it is right next door) , map it and show it to the driver before you head out, you can probably save a little hassle. Our driver got lost and wanted to charge us for his incompetence, even though he claimed to have lived in Amsterdam his entire life. Judging by his name and thick Indian accent, we found this unlikely. We had two cab drivers who were confounded by the address.

Room Tip: See the note for Taxis, above

Stayed at Eric's B&B in the Jordaan district. Excellent location. We stayed in the ensuite room with the white door on the 1st floor. Its got a good selection of books in the bookcase and I enjoyed going through the books.

Eric asked what we wanted for breakfast on the day of arrival, and provided everything we wanted. Eric was also very easily contactable either via whatsapp or sms both before and during our stay.

B&B had a washing machine and a beautiful functional kitchen. Washing detergent etc all provided for. There's a nice lil coffee machine too. One thing to note, if you want to cook, do ask for oil/butter as there isn't any in the kitchen. Also, if you like milk with your coffee or tea, ask for that too as there is only creamer in the kitchen.

Do ask Eric for restaurant/museum recommendations! We loved everything he recommended!

Will definitely stay here again when we visit Amsterdam.

Although I have reviewed this great apartment before, I thought I would comment on my recent trip in September 2013.

Eric was, as always, very kind and considerate and made sure that my stay was as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. He really is a great host! The apartment was very clean throughout, comfortable and as you have read previously in a fantastic location, so convenient for everything!

If you want to experience living in a house built in 1690, right on a canal in beautiful Amsterdam, then book with Eric!!

I will definately return!

We were so fortunate to get this place. It was clean, beautifully renovated, and the kitchen was great. Eric took care of everything for us, and the place is located in a great neighbourhood with a great market down the street on the weekends.

Thanks Eric!

A consistent patron of BnBs in the US, and with most hotel rooms in Amsterdam booked due to a Cardiologist Conference, Eric's places looked ideal. He didn't have availability at the Canal House, though did at the Jordaan rooms. I was under the impression that I had the room with an ensuite toilet, as I paid 90 euro per night. Be clear with this question when you check in.

Having learned to read TripAdvisor reviews in advance for other bookings, the reviews were most helpful. There is confusion over the Canal property vs. Jordaan rooms, and the pricing is a clear indicator, so do check out Eric's website. Some commented on small room sizes and the tight winding stairs, though I found them to be consistent with other European cities. Others commented that this isn't a true BnB as breakfast is not made for you. I actually preferred, and was quite pleased with, Eric's generously stocking the fridge in advance with my referred foods, then I could wake and prepare breakfast at my convenience.

It is also common for a double room to have 2 twin beds side by side, and that is how my room was set up. The shower/sink were nicely done as was the toilet just outside my room door.

If this is your first time to Amsterdam, I recommend arriving during daylight. While quite safe, the neighborhood may seem dark and therefore harder to navigate via street signs after sunset. The BnB and neighborhood initially show best during the day, in my view, so let that be your first impression! As you learn the area, you will venture out and find a fairly quiet though vibrant night life just around the corner with small restaurants and pubs with enjoyable food and atmosphere.

Similarly, walking from Centraal station is fine (10-15 minutes depending on luggage), though much easier in daylight if you aren't familiar with the city. It will set you back about 9 euro to take taxi from the station.

Also, Eric provides towels, and consistent with other European BnBs/Hotels, plan to bring a washcloth if you want one. REI sells small microfiber 'towels' that can double as washcloths.

If this is your first trip to Europe, there may be some adjustments due to centuries-old buildings and compact surroundings. Pack light, take advantage of backpacks, bring an open mind, and enjoy!

Room Tip: If you're not accustomed to traditional European BnBs with the toilet separate from your room, r...

A great place to stay and Eric is a great host. Looking over the canal with a short walk to the Nine Street area and all its boutiques, cafes and bars - a great location. The flat is lovely, elegant and comfortable with really nice touches that make all the difference - such as the Nespresso machine complete with coffee! Thanks Eric we had a lovely stay and hope to come back again soon.
