The Flying Pancake is a first rank bed and breakfast, ideal for tourists and professional travellers alike. Our room, the Captain's Suite, was comfortable and well-appointed, and accurately described on their web site. Eveything has a high-tech feel, from the available and free wireless internet to lighting controlled by remote control. The suite occupies a full floor (up steep and narrow stairs that somehow seemed less daunting after a day or two) in a restored 275 year old Amsterdam narrow house. We enjoyed excellent breakfasts, which magically appeared outside our door soon after we awoke each morning. We liked relaxing in the suite at the end of a long day of walking and sight-seeing. We slept well on a comfortable bed with excellent linens, with very little street noise to bother us. We were charmed by always helpful hosts Claudia and Hans and their lovely children. We couldn't have made a better choice.
The Flying Pancake is on the edge of the Plantage, easily accessible from Schiphol airport -- take the train to Centraal Station and then Tram 9. Amsterdam is a very walkable city, and we got most places that way, using the tram only a couple of times to return home at the end of a long day. The location is perfect for people who want to see the city and yet not stay in a noisy hotel in the midst of a tourist district. Staying there gives you a sense of what it might be like to live in Amsterdam. There are a number of ethnic restaurants in the Plantage, within a short walk, frequented by locals.
In short, the good things you read about The Flying Pancake on Tripadvisor.com are true. Among the scores of B&Bs we have stayed at over the last dozen years, it ranks at or very near the top. We have found the hosts are crucial to the B&B experience, and Claudia and Hans are tops in our book. We hope to return there on our next trip to Amsterdam.
