“Fireplace and cognac”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2008

A very good place to stay. Really excellent value for money. When I was searching for a place to stay, I browsed through numerous hotels, each and everyone of them far more expensive than this wonderful retreat and not offering half of the services you can get at the flying pancake.
Fireplace, big comfortable bed, Bang Olufsen TV and Hi-Fi set, ample space, free cognac, whisky and so on, perfect breakfast, excellent location (central but not noisy) and a very nice ambience. Everything you could ask for. Excellent value for the 145 E per night.

My husband and I stayed at the Flying Pancake in April 2008. We stayed in the Captain's Suite and had a wonderful time. Claudia was more than helpful and booking the room through her was very easy and convenient.

The place was immaculately clean and had all the comforts of home. I loved the steam shower, espresso machine and location. We were a short walking distance to a tram stop that took us everywhere we wanted to go in Amsterdam.

As for dining, Claudia directed us to a great cafe, Puccini's that we went to often to take breaks in between sights. We loved the coffee and ambiance. We also loved a tapas place on Plantage Keerklan formerly known as La Sala. It had excellent food and we were the only tourists in there so you know it was good. :)

What my husband loved most was all of the room the suite provided us. He loved the fact that it was more like an apartment and not some cramped cookie cutter room. For the price, it is a great deal! Our family stayed at a hotel in Leidslplein and payed the same price for a room you could barely walk in.

For a comfortable stay in a clean and centrally located place stay here!

  • Liked — all that space :)
  • Disliked — a strong enough wi-fi signal was difficult to get at times

Great place. Suites are very well appointed.
The owner is exceptionally helpful.
Her choices for dining was excellent and she was very helpful relative to directions, etc.

A little removed from key sites, but the city is so manageable it is an easy walk or tram to almost everywhere. Flip side is that the neighborhood is very quiet.

Would definitely go back.

We stayed at the FP two over the weekend of 1-2 March 2008. The location was excellent (near to a tram stop from the Central Station) and within an easy walk to some great shops and restaurants.

Claudia made us very welcome and the room was huge with good facilities such as open fire and steam shower. It was also quiet and comfortable.

Breakfast is delivered to your door - great selection of bread, pastries, cheese, meat, jam - and Claudia is so attentive that she noticed we weren't eating all the breads - so changed the delivery to include boiled egg and yoghurt.

Nice little touches like fresh tulips in the room, a great supply of DVD's, CD's and an iPod, and really good toiletries made the whole experience very special

Only negative is that access is up 2 flights of very steep stairs - no good if you struggle on stairs - and hard work if you have large bags

If you are looking for something that's a bit different, close to the centre of Amsterdam, and a real experience, you must try The Flying Pancake. The two suites are just brilliant, so well appointed, spacious and comfortable.

The breakfast, which arrives at your door in a basket all beautifully presented with fresh fruit, bread, cold meat etc etc, is pure delight - like opening a wonderful hamper full of goodies.

The room is spacious and modern looking out over the surrounding street scene, typicaly Dutch, interesting and within a few minutes walk of shops, museums etc. There is plenty to occupy guests with music CD's and DVD's and a wellstocked tray of different drinks. And the shower/steam room is a wonderful way to start your day.

And the family are a delight with a warm and friendly welcome. it would be difficult to ask for more or to find anywhere better.

Stayed December 2007

The Flying Pancake is an excellent place to stay if you are looking for a treat in Amsterdam. My girlfriend and I were looking for a boutique hotel in A'dam for two nights as we don't like the Marriott-style chains when staying for leisure. We found the FP and were delighted with the whole experience.

What we liked:
1. Great location in a quiet residential neighbourhood (which was lovely after walking around town all day) only 12 minutes walk from the centre of town (if you are good with a map)
2. In a beautiful house with Dutch character
3. Claudia is the perfect host, attentive, charming but unobtrusive – she happily ordered taxis for us late at night to get to the airport the next morning
4. Breakfast - Claudia squeezed fresh orange juice and provided a selection of fresh breads and yoghurts each morning
5. Space - our loft 'apartment' was the size of a small hotel suite for the price of a regular room
6. Luxuriously equipped room (shower-come-sauna, the bed sheets were amazingly soft, B&O stereo and TV, fresh coffee maker, etc etc) with loads of natural light

What we didn't like:
1. Nothing stands out for - we loved it, but FP isn't the place for you if you are old / have bad knees / are overweight / have small children as the stairs are very very steep and unguarded

Thank you Claudia !

Great location to everything in a quiet neighborhood. The rooms are like apartments with first class amenities. I would have expected to pay a lot more for the experience.
