We arrived on July 4th for five nights and had the most wonderful stay with Karel at The Collector. The house is a unique reflection of the owner with little nooks and cabinets containing interesting bits and pieces collected over the years. Our spacious room was in the front of the house with its own balcony. The bed was one of the most comfortable we have ever slept on. Everything was absolutely spotless, but more than that, we really appreciated the little touches. For example, there were always fresh flowers in our room and the guest kitchen and we took great advantage of the free internet access.
Karel is a most gracious and accommodating host who is very knowledgeable, hospitable and friendly. Unlike traditional B&B's, a wide variety of groceries -including fresh eggs from his chickens in the back garden- are supplied and you make your own breakfast and snacks whenever you wish in the guest kitchen. This made our stay just like being at home. Karel goes out almost daily to bring in fresh bread, dairy, produce and whatever else you might like.
We also loved the location - a quieter part of city surrounded by pretty tree lined streets and beautiful shops, but still very close to everything. The Concertgebow concert hall, the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh museums and the Vondelpark are in the neighbourhood and you could virtually walk everywhere in the city from thee. . There is also a tram stop with frequent service right across the street.
Compared to other places to stay in Amsterdam that we researched, this was both terrific value and very comfortable and relaxed. We would definitely stay there again!
