The Collector is a great place. I selected it because of the quiet but convenient location and the self service kitchen. Our room facing the garden was small, but very clean and comfortable with huge windows we could open to catch the breeze. The kitchen, which was spotless and well equipped, really came in handy when we got up late after the long flight from the US or wanted to keep some wine and soft drinks in the refrigerator. Although all three rooms were occupied during the 4 nights we were there, everyone was very quiet and it almost seemed we had the whole place to ourselves. It was exactly as I hoped it would be, and I would stay there again without hesitation.

This place was clean friendly and wonderfully located. 3 minute walk to Concertbegow, 5 to Van Gogh Museum and Rieksmuseum.
Quiet residential neighborhood with nice restaurants. Karel was friendly but stayed out of your way. Plenty of food left in the kitchen for breakfast. When I asked if I could install "Skype" on his computer. He said "sure" and the next day bought a Skype phone for the community computer. In a very expensive city this place was very reasonable. Tram stop just outside the door.

First of all, Karel is a very nice man and kind landlord.
The location is extremely convenient, 5 mins from the Van Gogh Museum.
The bedroom was clean, so where the linen and the towels.
The kitchen was a little less clean (the cutlery and dishes, in particular), but overall we were very satisfied and will probably book again in the future.

We stayed at the Collector for two nights recently and found it to be as good as the reviews here indicate. It has three good sized rooms, two in the back looking over a garden and one in the front adjacent to the communal kitchen looking out onto the street. We were in the room on the street (2nd floor), the only problem was that there was a lot of street noise as it is on a busy boulevard. There are storm doors as well as the doors to the balcony that help to cut down on the noise but it is still significant. The rooms in the back don't have that problem so if you can get one of those you will be better off.

Each room has it's own bath and access to a small balcony. The rooms in back share the balcony while the one in front is not shared. The kitchen is stocked well enough with eggs, bread, cold cuts, cheese, pancakes, coffee etc. You prepare your own food and clean up after yourself.

The location is very good, virtually on top of the Museum Plein and a few blocks from Vondel Park. There is a major transit stop a block away from which you can get just about anywhere including the airport on a new bus line. The day we left however the bus drivers were on strike so we didn't get to take advantage of it.

Karel (pronounced sort of like Carl) is knowledgeable and friendly but will leave you to yourselves so don't expect to be entertained as in some B&B's.

My best friend and I celebrated our 50th birthdays with a vacation in Amsterdam. We spent 5 nights at The Collector, and couldn't have been happier. I had done a lot of research on available B&B's (and hotels), and decided to try The Collector due to all the positive reviews; they were spot on! We had the smaller of the 3 rooms because we needed twin beds, but we had no complaints - our room was large, clean and well-appointed, with very comfortable beds and a nice balcony; the bathroom was good sized with a nice shower. Karel was extremely attentive and yet unobtrusive, willing to help in any way he could. The do-it-yourself breakfast arrangement is the best idea ever. No waiting around for a specific time to eat, which can be difficult if you are trying to adjust from a different time zone. Karel's kitchen is completely equipped, and you can also put anything extra you want in the refrigerator with your name on it. Karel will also buy whatever you like for breakfast. My friend and I even ate in a couple of times just because we were so very tired in the evenings after walking so much every day. Having a kitchen made that possible, and it was a great place for me to hang out and read in the evenings as I tend to stay up later and my friend likes to go to sleep early. Yes, the floors do squeek a little and the one flight of stairs is a bit steep, but this IS a restored house in Amsterdam, and that just made it more charming. Nothing woke us up at night - not even Karel coming up the stairs with fresh eggs early in the mornings.

Every day there were fresh towels in our room, along with fresh flowers in the rooms and kitchen. Karel even offered to do some washing for us before we left. He was just super, and we couldn't have asked for a better place to stay. Also, the location felt very safe and was nice and quiet at night. It is in a super convenient location as Tram line 16 stops right outside the door, and the stop for the Connexxion shuttle bus to Keukenhof is just 2 blocks up towards the Concertgebouw. Everything in Amsterdam is within an easy walk if you are so inclined. There is also an Albert Heijn grocery store a couple of blocks away if you want to shop for goodies, with a lot of take out and cook-in foods available. With plenty of nice restaurants in the area, and the option to fix your own meals, it really was perfect.

We'd planned on spending our last 2 evenings with my family in another town, however, circumstances beyond our control forced us to change our plans at the last minute. Unfortunately Karel was totally booked so we had to find another place to stay. We ended up at another B&B, had to pay more, and were really not at all happy there. We missed the convenience and wonderful atmosphere of The Collector! When either my friend or I are back in Amsterdam, we will without hesitation stay at The Collector again. Thanks Karel for being a wonderful host and wonderful person!
