“Great B & B in Museum District of Amsterdam”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 6, 2010

This is a great, quiet and comfortable bed & breakfast in Amsterdam. Very nice residential neighborhood. The cafes and nearby hang-outs were all very local....not a lot of tourists in this quiet area, right near all the museums and an easy bike ride or tram ride to the city center. Irene is a great host and was always willing to answer a question or make a recommendation. Comfortable room, bed and accommodations. We will stay here again the next time we are there. Not far from quality coffee houses as well!

Nice B&B with a distinctive home feel to it. I have very much enjoyed my stay there for two nights. Located in a nice residential area, not far from the city centre. It's only a few stops away by a tram. Rooms are clean and comfortable. Kitchenette is handy and gives you much needed flexibility when and what to eat. Recommended to those who are looking to have a nice and relaxing city break. Would love to come back and write more. Thank you, Irene. Your friends from Moscow.

We stayed in this B&B for 6 night and we can absolutely recommend it to (almost) anybody.

When we arrived we were given the smallest of Irene's 3 rooms. Some people might find this one too small but we were quite happy with it. She had not yet completed the cleaning but we only left our luggage in the room and headed out again and when we came back everything was fine. Unfortunately the chandelier was broken and she hadn't yet found a replacement but there were floor lamps in plenty.

After three nights, some other guests left and Irene suggested that we move to the larger room - and: WOW. Lovely! The small room had all necessary amenities but this room was VERY spacious. Both were lovingly decorated with all kinds of antiques as well as knickknack.

Both rooms had a shower room, a double bed, table with chairs, a TV... There's wireless for free, too! The two big rooms also have private fridges.

All guests share one kitchen. Irene provides bread, cereal, milk, juice, cheese, cold meats, all kinds of spreads, tea, coffee, fruit... So whenever you get up, you can just help yourself to whatever you want. There's a stove and microwave, so it's no problem to cook a small dinner for those who don't want to eat out every day. There's plenty of cutlery, plates and whatever else one might need. Of course, this means that jam jars etc have been used by other people - we didn't mind but there are people who might not like this.

There's little to say about cleanliness - everything was clean, no complaints there at all.

Irene was very helpful and always happy to answer questions about sights, places to eat... She's a treasure! For those who speak neither Dutch nor English - she also speaks German (maybe even more languages, not sure about that).

Location was wonderful, too. Public transport around the corner. Only a very short walk to the major museums as well as to the town centre. And yet, it was very quiet at night. Lovely views towards the Rijksmuseum from all windows.

There was one very minor annoyance - the walls seem to be a bit thin, so once or twice we were woken up by people coming home late or leaving early. But really, that was a very minor thing!

There are only two possible reasons why somebody might not like this B&B:

You have to climb several rather steep staircases. For elderly, infirm or disabled people, as well as for small children, this might be a problem.

Irene has a cat. On the first day, while Irene was showing us the room, the cat visited us for a little while. This means that the B&B is NOT the right place for people allergic to cats!

For us, both points weren't a problem at all. Unfortunately, the cat didn't visit again for cuddles ;-(

When finally arriving at this B&B, (the location is far from all the interesting points in Amsterdam apart from several museums), we were met with a small entrance hall filled with junk.

The rooms are fine, the minimum requirements of cleanliness are met, but the kitsch aspects borders on junk. The bathroom sinks are so tiny that it is impossible not to splash water all over the floor.

We only had breakfast the first morning as it was not very appealing. An assortment of breads, jams, eggs, concentrated juice, instant coffee and teabags pretty much sum up the offering.

The endless, narrow staircases would definitely be a problem for people that have mobility problems or are of a mature age.

Of the three rooms, only one really gives onto the canal, the other two are around the corner and you have to stretch your neck pretty far to get a glimpse of the water.

All in all, the place is quite disappointing and way over-priced. We were charged about double what this was really worth. I've stayed at hostels that were nicer.

This is a hidden gem for sure. My hostess was fantastic, friendly, and knowledgeable. The B&B is located in a quiet part of Amsterdam but very accessible to all the hot spots. Right behind the Rijksmuseum and the Heineken Brewery, just s short walk or tram ride to the center of the city.

I highly recommend Between Art and Kitsch B&B to any and all visitors to this wonderful city. You will be treated like family in a warm and friendly home with a great view of a quaint little canal full of boats and people.

Overall we had a good experience here. The owner was very friendly and helpful, and the B&B location is just a relatively short walk from museums and the central Amsterdam canals. Very quiet neighborhood -- right on a canal. Our room was small, with one of the smallest bathrooms I've ever experienced, but the room was clean and reasonably comfortable. However, we were on the 3rd floor and to carry our luggage up 2 long, steep flights of stairs. The continental breakfast was adequate, but nothing special.

We were 2 parties of friends/co-workers traveling at 2 different ,overlapping dates. One part of our group stayed 6 nights and the other stayed 12 nights.
We booked quite far ahead, and had many emails with Irene to work out the details.
Irene was very helpful and steadfast in her commitment to us.
We felt this B and B was a real find both in price and in charm.
It is not your normal hotel stay at all..much different and more memorable. Who has a stuffed peacock in their living room, anyway!
We were not intimidated by the "Dutch stairs" and found them easy enough, even after we had trapsed around the counrty-side for 12 hours each day.
On one floor we passed through on the Dutch stairs there is cigarette smoke which is a shock to the nose, but it dissapates at the next floor.
The location is quiet and in a real neighbohood where there were so many cozy and excellent restaurants. (to be reviewed elsewhere). We could walk to the Rijks Museum and to the Van Gogh Museum which is open until 10pm on Friday nights.
We could also walk to the Leidesplain where there is much entertainment as well as Canal tours. In the other direction is the Heinekin Experience. Trams are easily negotiable and accessible. And one is near the Albert Cuypt Market which is open each day save Sunday
I think back on the Between Art and Kitsch stay...fondly.
