“Basic but cheerful budget hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 26, 2006

Three girls from the UK in Amsterdam for the ING Marathon.

The Verdi serves a perfect base for a weekend break with friends or while on a budget. Go elsewhere if wanting luxury or a romantic get away as bedrooms are basic.

Quiet and pretty location at the heart of the art quarter. Trams near-by with great access to centre, trains etc. Very friendly Japanese family still running the Verdi - traditional style building with steep steep steps.

Decor is colourful and charming in a cluttered sort of way at ground level. Upstairs the decor is much more simple and hostel like.

Rooms - our room for three was cluttered with furniture, but sheets were crisply clean and towels changed daily. Shower-room was small but very modern and sparklingly clean.

  • Liked — Location and staff
  • Disliked — shabby bedroom furniture and uptairs decor generally

Right near the Vondelpark, in a lovely posh quiet area. Breakfast is good. Friendly, respectful staff. Clean. Mooky the little black cat is nice. Shower is good. Satellite TV in all rooms is a good touch. Piped music at beakfast times makes it seem like a scene from Twin Peaks!! I love it.

There is however a pervading smell of onions.

And to all the American folk complaining about the steep stairs: This is europe guys, buildings are old and they are built differently to houses in the states. Part of Amsterdams charm is the 'cosy' architecture, and steep, wobbly, narrow staircases are part of its eccentric charm. Are the stairs to steep or are you too fat and unfit? Just kidding guys.

See you soon Hotel Verdi.

  • Liked — quirkiness!
  • Disliked — onion smell pervades throughout
  • Tips/Secrets — feed mooky ham at breakfast

Pay attention: room 12 is out of control, tunnel effect is waiting for you so take care, in the name of the Lord, the beds are a torture machine, those 2-meter pillow will destroy your neck. a weird looking fat black cat will run after you, really diabolic; check the sunshine curtains, the dream of every cinderella; by the way if you are up for some latino seduction pay attention to the italian-michaelbolton-surprise. Seeing the photographs is not easy but anyway all is worse you'd ever imagine. Not to mention the stairs hell-design, you'll easily fracture all your body.

we booked a trip to amsterdam and stayed at the hotel verdi after reading the reviews previously posted on this site

firstly the stairs were dangerous not just steep

secondly the breakfast worth a second visit i don't think so just bread cheese and coffee

service well this was the only plus the staff were very plesant but could give no advice on the city as they had only been in amsterdam a short time

worth the journey

This Japanese-family owned hotel is a great place to stay in while vacationing in Amsterdam. We stayed in room 12 (all the way at the top) and we loved it! We had our own private bathroom, toilet and shower, and it was decently priced. Stayed December 26, 2004 to December 29, 2004 and if we ever return to Amsterdam, we plan to stay at Hotel Verdi. The downside are the steep stairs and that keeps me from rating it 5. The included buffet breakfast is filling and there's a nice variety. The staff is very welcoming and after a cold winter day, we return to the hotel in the evening and they offer to make us some tea. Overall, money will spent! Location is awesome -- near the Van Gogh museum and it is on a quiet, well lit street! Also family friendly, if it matters to some.
