Not as bad the reviews state. It was basic, but a similar standard to a university house & had a great lively location with loads of restaurants & coffee shops around. Not sure what the other reviewers were expecting for the price.
The owners are a bit scary but they're probably ok when they don't want to be the boss aha.
We stayed in the 5 private bedroom, which is on the top floor & yes, the stairs are a pain, but you get use to them. Our other friends stayed in a shared room of 8 and another room of 10. They were all the same standard.
Though the bedroom was small, the beds were comfortable and clean. When we slept we weren't kept awake by everyone else in the hostel, so that was good.
We had an en-suite which was also clean...but a very small 'wet-room'. The only thing was that the bin in the bathroom wasn't changed. When the showers on the toilet does get wet, but that's why there is a lid. The shower was hot & quite powerful, so it worked fine for us to shower each day :).
At the end of the day, you don't go to Amsterdam for the hostel, it's used for sleeping & getting ready, and for that it's good. :) You also get free internet access at this hostel so you can look at places before you go.
The location of this hostel is excellent. 10 minute walk to trams, 10 minutes to lots of coffee shops, 20 minutes to Dam Square. So many restaurants around :).
