“Really excellent stay at the Dutch Design Artemis”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 3, 2011

This is a really excellent hotel – it is modern, the rooms are kept spotlessly clean and the staff are extremely helpful and courteous. As others have commented the reception staff go to great lengths to assist in any way. Breakfast is well worth having - with hot and cold food available at the buffet. We were offered a discount if we booked it for each day we were staying and paid €14 each per day.

We travelled to the hotel from the airport on 195 bus (€2.60 unless you buy a chip-card at the airport – see below) to the IBM stop – you can’t miss the big white IBM building. Cross the road and walk a few meters to the right take the road left between the Atradius and a second IBM building. At the first junction you will see the hotel on the right. It is a very short walk.

The hotel website makes it clear that it is out of town between Schiphol and the city centre - so I do not understand why some people have complained about that. It is in a very pleasant business area. If you don’t mind a 20 minute walk you can reach several places to eat and find two large supermarkets. We ate at one of the two Chinese Restaurants but there was Thai and a European well as some pizza places and cafes.

We found the beds comfortable and spent five peaceful nights. TV has BBC 1, 2 and World as well as several european station. The TV has clear reception.

Dutch public transport is very good and the best value is got by buying a GVB ticket. There are 24-hour (€7), 48 (€11.50), 72 (€15.50), 96 (€19.50), 120 (€24), 144 (€27.50) and 168 (€30) OV-chipcards which they allow unlimited travel on all trams, GVB buses, metros and night buses. Remember to swipe our chip-card in and out. We found that the number 2 tram was the best bet to get into the city - even though it takes about 10 minutes to get to the stop (Louwesweg) because it runs very frequently and goes all the way to Centraal Station. You can also use all of the trams in the City. The nearest bus stop is for the 145 bus - just at the rear of the hotel but it served by the rival company Connexxion and it does not accept the GVB card.

We really enjoyed our stay, couldn’t fault the hotel and would recommend it if you do not want to stay in the centre of Amsterdam.

We stayed at the Artemis for 3 nights but definitely won't stay again. It's very far from anywhere and tucked away between a business estate and a housing estate. The rooms are nice enough but it would really be nice if whoever allocates them would remember that a married couple would prefer a double bed rather than 2 single beds. It's becoming the oldest trick in the book to get more revenue from room 'upgrades' so stop doing it. Also...wooden panelling in the rooms and a purple plastic childs chair??

We only had one drink at the bar in all the time we were in Amsterdam because there is simply no choice but Heineken and some drink i had never heard of and the hotel has a very 'cold' feeling to it. There is no place to sit and relax inside the hotel at all and for some strange reason they have let someone loose with a few planks of wood and a hand saw!!....I mean, what the hell was the person thinking when they decided to build a wooden wall around a single chair in the middle of the lobby?....Planks of wood had also been sawn up and nailed together to make what i can only describe as 'jengo gone wrong' and the seating area inside looks like a school canteen.

You're a hotel and not an art gallery so sack the person who commisioned the mad chippy, stop trying to be all artistic, and concentrate on giving your customers a comfortable stay.

We won't be going back to the Artemis for 2 main reasons; It's too far from anywhere - unless you work at IBM, and the boarding area at the airport has more charm.

Excellent hotel which has everything you need, clean and tidy. With reguards to coming from the airport buy a gvb ticket in the airport their prices are really cheap and can be used on all buses or trams. Catch the 195 bus and this will take you to the bus stop around the corner of the hotel, its the one opposite the ibm building. For a 3 day pass it was 19.50 euros and this is unlimited use. There is a bustop around the trams are a ten minute walk away, catch the number 2 tram into town and back its soon easy. I would recommend this hotel its fab for the price and around about 15 minutes from town. Make sure you dont pull anything out of the minibar as they have sensors on them and will charge you for them and there are extra pillows there in the cupboards if you look. All i can say it was fab free hairdryer, trousers press, ironing board, iron and free tea and coffee. Like i say if you read the book thats left for you you will know everything. You can also purchase gvb tickets from reception.

We recently stayed at The Artemis as part of a post-wedding celebratory holiday in Amsterdam, after it was recommended by some of the party who had stayed there before.

I'll start with the positives:

The hotel looks lovely, is clean and well furbished and the desk staff did what they could to help. There is free wireless internet also.

The negatives:

The hotel is so far out from the activity centres of Amsterdam (Leidseplein and Dam Square) that it takes a 10-15 minute walk followed by a 25-30 minute tram ride to get there. It is very close to the airport though.

Equally the hotel had clearly over booked. Even though we had booked two months in advance, when we arrived we were told to wait while they found us rooms (and the desk staff told us that some people would have to be sent to another hotel as we were having their rooms). People who ordered twins got doubles, people who ordered doubles got singles, the whole thing was a nightmare. One person then had a member of staff cancel his room key and walk into his room after 24 hours as she thought he had been moved. A poor show really.

Finally the rooms looked great, but the beds were uncomfortably soft, and only came with one pillow each which was tiny and thin so sleep wasn't really possible

I really wanted to love The Artemis, and had heard good things, but I won't be staying there again.

Room Tip: Double check your booking!

A great hotel with great service, but far from the centre of the town(15-20min)<especially at night when the night-bus services are so rare and the only way to get back is either cycling or getting a taxi (about 30 euros).A smart option if you are on a business trip-a great value of money.Prefer:the breakfast-it costs 19euros per day,per person, not really cheaper than in town.Prefer not:to rent a bike from there-though it sounds cheaper for a day rental(15 instead of 17.5),you have to be back at 11.And buy water and snacks before getting there;really expensive and nothing close.

Room Tip: on the 8th floor with a terrace view

Me and a friend recently took a trip to Amsterdam, being students we set out looking for a good hotel at an even better price and the Artemis hotel did not disappoint at £55 per night for a 4* hotel. Once we booked the hotel in January this year we read a few reviews that did not show the Artemis in a good light, this was a bit disconcerting as we didn't know what to expect, we read many reviews, and the main qualm that people had was that it was so far from the centre of Amsterdam and the transport links were poor. Although the hotel is outside the centre of Amsterdam in the business district i dispute the comments made about the transport links, Amsterdam has one of the bus, tram and train services i have ever experienced, it was a few minutes walk from the hotel to the nearest tram station, Louwesweg, and then 10 minutes on the tram number 2 to the main entertainment are Leidseplien and a further 5 minutes to Centraal station. The airport was also close to he the hotel and it cost €25 to get to the hotel which was cheaper than the hotel shuttle between to two of us, alternatively there is a bus you can catch which is the 195, we took the bus back to the airport on our last day as we had purchased a 72 hour OV-Chipkaart from the hotel for €15.50 which allowed for us to have unlimited travel over that 72 hours which was great for the tram and bus links to the main entertainment areas in Amsterdam. The hotel was warm and welcoming with very helpful, friendly and knowledgeable staff who spoke pretty much fluent English. We didn't try the hotel restaurant but we heard that the food was absolutely fantastic which i can believe due to the quality of the hotel. The Artemis was well furnished and we had everything that we needed for out trip. All of the rooms at the hotel are well furnished well and extremely comfy, and all include a guide to the room, hotel and Amsterdam.

Problems with the hotel:
During our stay we only had one problem, which was that the minibar in the room is automated, which i did not realise so as soon as anything is taken out it adds it to the bill, i say this was a problem but as we did not consume anything we picked up we did not get charged we just had to explain to reception and they removed it from the bill. (it says that the minibar is automated on the actual fridge, i just didn't read that)

Overall i would most defiantly recommend The Dutch Design Artemis Hotel, in fact we are already talking about going back over to Amsterdam for new year (2 days after our return) and will defiantly be staying in this hotel. I hope you have found this review useful

This hotel was seriously one of the best i had stayed in. Check in said 2pm onwards but we arrived at 10am and our room was ready. It was very clean and the size of the room was spacy. The bathroom facilities were great with a powerful shower. The hotel was only about a 5 min walk from the tram stop from which you get the number 2 tram to leibseplein (the entertainment district) for all the bars, restaurants and coffeeshops. Taxis were expensive but if you get an ov card for public transport (cost depends on the length of card, 1 hour, a day 3 days etc) then you can get any bus, tram or metro (not sure about trains) and swipe in when you get on and off when you get off. Trams are the best way to get round. A deffinate must stay.
