“friendly staff, nice room, mildly haunted bathrooms”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 16, 2007

I stayed there with my boyfriend in room #5, Sept. 2003. The room was small and a little in need of a makeover, but clean and happy. According to the website, it looks like the hotel has been redone since then. It has a lot of character, and tasty breakfast. The location was good, if you are interested in spending a lot of time at museums - its right near the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, and Vondelpark (which is a lovely park, just watch out for killer bicyclists), but is really no where near the red light district.

If you believe in ghosts, keep reading. If not, stop reading: This place is certainly haunted. So are MOST places in Amsterdam, but this one in particular freaked me out. I wouldn't stay there again, because of that - but besides this, its a great place!

  • Liked — the view from the room. nice courtyards. clean.
  • Disliked — haunted bathroom.

Hotel Bema was a decent place to stay. It was clean and the people running the hotel were nice and polite. Our room had a general feel of grunge though, the rug was old and gross. The bed was seemingly clean though. The sink in the room seemed clean as well. It was fine for what it was. I was a bit turned off by the breakfast delivered to the room daily. It was gross to eat next to the sink and in a room with a gross rug. But it would be fine for someone who isn't obsessed with clean surroundings, like I seem to be.The shared shower was fine. It seemed clean and there wasn't a huge line or even anyone waiting or in there while I used it. There are two or three stalls, private, with locks. The shared toilet was also fine and seemingly clean though it's always a bit strange to share like that. It's a great location- near to the train, the museums, restaurants etc.

  • Liked — The big window in our room.
  • Disliked — The rug and grunge.

Positives--extremely quiet, no noise at all. Had a window overlooking a courtyard of apartments, a nice view. The room and shared bathroom/showers was clean. Breakfast in bed was nice and decent, nothing special. Very good price. Great location across from Museumplein.

Negatives--this is the smallest room I have ever seen. Barely enough room to walk around the bed. The decor was absolutely terrible--my room looked nothing like the photos on the website. The television is tiny and mounted high up on the wall.

We stayed here AFTER looking at TripAdvisor, and took it that the Spanish reviewer was just being neurotic. Even thought I can't read Spanish - it is true. The place is NOT fit for habitation, and the 'greeting' member of staff was a rude [--], with all the charm of a pig.

The man that showed us to our 'lodgings' - which was 15 minutes from reception, was nice but looked like a bum who was down and out on his luck . We were taken there by bus - charming as you can imagine! That was after being mislead that a car was coming to pick us up.

Now - the room - we had to clean it - I am being as serious as a heart attack. Lucky one of my friends bought supplies - but we did spend a good 2 hours taking care of it.

The bedlinen was stained and the carpets were grotty - I didnt walk barefoot - and tried to aviod touching anything unless necessary. Im not too choosy - Im just not a bum off the streets - and believe me a lot of bums make the effort to stay clean.

The shower room and combined toilet had damp in it and was rotting.

We were housed in a normal block of flats with the general public.

What I am explaining is that this 'hotel' had just appeared to rent a flat - as if we were in Hackney! Believe me the ambience was the same as being in Hackney at 2am - just as dingy.

The only saving grace was that Amsterdam was a hoot and Im going back this year - just not there! You have been warned people.

The hotel was good overall. Our room was very large (but we did have 4 people), the shower worked well, the museums were close, and food was delivered to our room.

The downside was that the sheets were not totally clean and the bathroom was down the hall.

Would recommend for a nice, cheap place to stay.

Me and a group of friends stayed in this hotel for 4 nights over the weekend as we wanted a cheap city break in amsterdam. When we arrived at the hotel we had to go up two steep staircases to reception so need to be able to do a fair few stairs if you want to stay here. On arrival the receptionist was friendly and gave us maps etc, we arrived early so left our luggage in reception until we could check in. The hotel is around 5-10 minute walk to liedsplein which is where all the bars/restaurants are and has good access to the trams which take you to central station and the red light district. Breakfast was served daily on a tray around half 8 someone knocks on your door with it but hey who wants to lie in bed all day anyway? The hotel was basic with a few patches etc on the carpet but it suited us for just a cheap place to kip; our toilet was shared but the corridors are short so there's not a long way to trek to the toilet. When we got to the hotel the hotel worker mentioned a discounted taxi to take us back to the airport, we though okay little did we know that on the day of departure the 'discounted taxi' was actually him driving us to the airport! but saved us 20 euros so whos complaining? Overall it was worth staying there just for some time in amsterdam the city was amazing, if you're on a budget this hotel is fine.

me and two friends stayed here and it was wonderful. when you're on a budget this place is money well spent. our room had a view of the gardens below, and the breakfast in the morning is simple but satisfying. the staff was super friendly. we're planning on visiting them again next time around.
