“Fantastic hotel.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 17, 2006

We have just returned from Amsterdam staying in the Aalborg hotel. The rooms are small but well suited to a short city break. They have had a recent refurb and I have to say look very nice indeed.

The hotel is within walking distence of a fantastic out-door market (5mins) and has a loverly park across the road.

You can take the number 25 tram from almost right outside the door to the city centre as far as central station although you can get to Dam square in around 20 - 30 minutes on foot (this way you get see a few extra sights that you may miss).

The staff at the hotel are (as with most people in Amsterdam) very frendly. The hotel also offers a bar and breakfast room.

I reccomend this hotel if you are going to Amsterdam, it is just the right distence away from the centre not to be a hassle from either city centre noise or traveling. I will definatly be using it again on future trips to Amsterdam.

We were worried about staying here, having read some pretty mixed reviews. We needn't have been - it was really great: very clean and comfortable room, with a good bathroom and cable TV and friendly, helpful staff (especially Khalid, on reception).

The hotel is close to good eating places, is 5 minutes tram ride and 20 minutes walk from the centre, has a pretty park right in front of it and, is a 5 minute walk from the fabulous Albert de Cuyp market (great bargains!). The best way to reach the hotel from Schiphol is to get the train from Schiphol to Centraal Station, then a no. 25 tram to '2e V d Helstraat' (shown on the tram's electronic boards as stops approach) walk 50m in the direction from which you have travelled and the hotel is right there.

Down sides: front rooms are noisy (our room was no. 17, which is at front) but not excessively so and no drinks facilities in rooms.

  • Disliked — noise
  • Tips/Secrets — try out the local cafes for unbeatable live music and good food.

Hi,
don't expect much, it's basic holland hotel. As in all holland hotels there is very small rooms, and elevator is like simple box without a door - it is normal in Amsterdam.
Well, if you want standart german/usa hotel style, you will need to pay much more - min 100 Eur in Amsterdam. But if want to pay 65 Eur/night - this hotel provides great service at this price. Very clean, bathroom is very clean also. Hotel is close to tram lines (5-10 min to central station / DAM), also there is great traditional market not far from hotel as well as many restaurants.

We found the room rather small - really only suitable for one person. No bed-side table, small wardrobe with few hangers. We stayed for three nights but the room and shower-room , particularly the wash basin which had a plug that did not fit, were not cleaned during that time. The bed was made.
On the positive side: the location was very central, the staff very helpful and the breakfast had plenty of variety.
We would stay at the hotel again when next we return to Amsterdam.
We had a wonderful time in a wonderful city.
Thank you!

I had a hellish one-night stay at Hotel Aarlborg. I was in Amsterdam for work. The room looked small but okay but I soon discovered the bedspread was dirty (sex stains - ew!) and the bathroom was far from the "spotlessly clean" attested to in other reviews. The real problem was that in the morning when I woke to have a shower there was no hot water. I phoned reception four or five times but no one answered -- and they claim to be a 24 hr reception. I went downstairs and was told "I can't help you" by the only staff member I could find, who was setting up for breakfast. I eventually made my complaint clear and was told there was nothing they could do, that they would try to fix the hot water system. Eventually I convinced the receptionist to give me the key to another room to shower there, which they did only very reluctantly. The operation is shonky -- terrible service where the guest is made to feel like an imposter. They shouldn't be running a hotel, certainly not aimed at business travellers. Yes, it's cheap, but it's not worth it.

Booked single room but got a twin (room31).

Good points. Good sized room. Very clean & newly decorated. Ceiling fan to keep cool. Multi-channel TV. Decent en-suite. Good location - 10/15 minutes from centre/railway station on direct tramline (number 25 stops just passed hotel) - about 1 euro each way (buy strip of 15 tickets @ shops). Also number 3 tram to Heineken/Van Gogh museums & canal bus stop (worth using for £12 a day). Rooms at front overlook park. Breakfast average for european hotel. Paid £50 per night through HotelsRUs. Most staff friendly & helpful & understand English like what I talk.

Less good. Trams are noisy 06.00 - 24.00 - even on 3rd floor. ASK FOR A ROOM AT THE BACK! Single rooms & triples look a bit small on plan, but I've stayed in worse. No tea making facilities or restaurant/bar but vending machine hidden inside breakfast room. Thank goodness lift working - stairs are steep, narrow and winding. Real hazard carrying suitcases. Towels are small but I was given five, so no problem! Also supplied with soap, showergel, shampoo. Just off my map, so a bit difficult to navigate - get a tram map from tourist info @ station.

Would stay there again - and there are many (more expensive) hotels I wouldn't say that about!

PS found previous reviews really helpful - well done this website!
