Our weekend trip to Amsterdam was our second visit to the city and a first for our guests travelling with us. I made the flight bookings several months prior to our trip 6th -8th April 2013. I did find that when booking a hotel many were not able to provide two double rooms within my price range as it must have been busy. Eventually I decided on the Aalborg as the location seemed suitable. On arrival we checked into the small reception and made our way to our rooms via the lift. They were both small doubles ours on the fourth floor front and our guests at the rear on the second floor, as in most of the hotels in the city the rooms are just big enough. The beds were clean and comfortable, with small ensuite facilites which were perfectly suitable for a short stay, there was plenty of hot water for showers . I found our room at the top floor was quiet enough for a good nights sleep, again our fellow travellers enjoyed their sleep at the back of the hotel. If using the stairs be warned they are narrow and steep, but this is a feature on many of the older buildings in the city. The hotel has a small bar on the ground floor (Grolsh on draught ,
excellent!)and a smoking area on a terrace at the rear. The bar area doubles up as the breakfast room.
We decided to pay extra as this was room only and have the continental breakfast ( 7 euro if you book with the hotel online or 9 euro at the hotel). We paid the 9 euros each , however I do think this is slightly overpriced for a continental breakfast , but it was all fresh produce.
On dealing with the staff, they were all friendly and helpful with directions and advice.
The hotel is located opposite a small park and only minutes walk away from the market. Trams are available to the centre outside the hotel, but we walked as the weather was so nice and sunny that weekend. Its only 10 minutes walk from the Heineken experience,(which we went to) and opposite that you can find the canal cruises, which is a must . We all enjoyed the stay and overall thought the hotel was very good, I would stay there again. Our guests enjoyed Amsterdam and they want to go back, however it is an expensive place to eat out and drink .
