“A romantic fantastic hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 28, 2013

If you are looking for a romantic hotel, with beautiful rooms, special lights, an old-fashion atmosphere, a very gentle staff, not far away from the city centre but very close to the museum area, the College Hotel is the right place. The façade of this ancient building is very nice, as well as the lights in the entrance, the fire place in the lounge rooms, the candles on the tables in the garden, everything is perfect for those travelling as a couple. Less adapt for families with children.
Rooms are very clean and soundproof. Nice and perfectly clean bathroom. A cocktail of welcome has been given free (and was very good). Prices are at the level of the service.

The College Hotel is attached to the Amsterdam hotel management training college and is used by the students to learn the trade as well as providing a great environment. The rooms are dark with a chocolate theme and the lights in the rooms seem to have a mind of their own. Just keep pressing until something happens that you like.
Also beware that some rooms have steps in them. That midnight trip to the loo could land you in the hospital so I would recommend giving up switching the lights off before it is completely dark. Now for the fun side of things. The rooms are comfortable and certainly not anything like a chain hotel, each is different and I've stayed in a few. The bar is always lively in the evening with helpful staff and decent service and the restaurant always has some good Dutch dishes on the menu and is excellent value. There are several tram lines that run right past the hotel and Museumplien is only a 10 minute stroll away.
It is many years since I've stayed anywhere else in Amsterdam and the only thing that would make me consider somewhere else was if the College Hotel was full.

Room Tip: Try to get a room not facing the main road. The trams can be noisy if you have the window open

Being a massive fan of Mr and Mrs Smith boutique hotels I was excited to see a reasonably priced one in Amsterdam. I loved the style of the hotel and that is used to be an old school, the rooms looked a perfect size!
On arrival I was not disappointed, the outside was illuminated in a purple light and I member of staff was waiting by the door to greet us and show us to reception. We had read that the service can be a bit 'ropey', which I wont entirely agree with but some members of staff seemed nervous which perhaps came across as 'ropey'.
After check in we were shown through the bar area to lifts and up to our room, 121. The room was clean and nice layout with a separate section that housed a small sofa, desk and mini bar.The bathroom was big with a lovely bath, nice sink area.
Complimentary water and chocolate lollipops on our pillows!
The only criticism really was on the first day we were out by 8am to visit Anne Frank's haus and a few other museums, we came back to our room at 4pm to rest before going out for dinner and they were only just going to clean our room. We asked for the room to be cleaned as we were exhausted and that evening there was a knock on our door. We opened it to find a member of staff with clean towels, more complimentary water and lollipops.

The hotel is a perfect location, it is quiet and on the edge of Museumplein that houses the Van Gogh museum and the Rijks muesum. There is a tram stop outside where tram no 5 and 24 will take you up to the Dam within 10 minutes.

Word of advise, if flying into Schippol airport, get the train to Amsterdam Suid train station and then tram no 5 and get off at Roelof Hartstraat. The total journey will take less that 20 minutes. If you get the train to central station and then a taxi or a tram it will take an hour.

An excellent trip and we are looking forward to returning!

Excellent hotel experience. Great atmosphere. Good service.

Only negative comments:
- A bit far from the city center (20mn by tram from central train station)
- Noisy rooms (no double windows and trams can be heard passing in front of the hotel late in the evening and early in the morning).

Room Tip: Superior rooms

Goregous rooms and service very attentive. Again this hotel is a training hotel where things need to be improved, as put 2 glasses if champagne when I have booked a room with champagen, make sure there are no dirty glasses inside.
Breakfast is AMAZING.

Based in a wonderful old school building, the hotel is also a hotel management training centre. Our room was excellent, with good facilities. Service was mixed - some students had a lot to learn! The restaurant was poor and expensive. The bar area was good and very popular.

Having just returned from a 3 night break at the College Hotel and never having stayed there before, I can advise that the hotel and the service received there far exceeded my expectations. Firstly, the building itself is an architectural delight, very well and imaginatively furnished and extremely comfortable. Two very, very minor niggles commented upon by others in Trip Advisor. Superb mood lighting in the rooms but not bright enough to read by in the evening, nor was there adequate lighting in the bathroom to be able to apply makeup very easily. The bathroom sink is smaller than one would expect. However, this did not in any way detract from our enjoyment. The service was friendly and professional, especially the lady who checked us in on arrival. 10 out of 10 to her, she took us to the lovely room and explained patiently how everything worked and was very happy to answer any queries about the city itself. Other staff were also very helpful and friendly. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this hotel to anyone. Thank you for a wonderful stay
