“Gorgeous Hotel in Amsterdam”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 10, 2012

I travel quite a bit to Amsterdam and This was my first stay at the College. The hotel is overall one of the nicest properties I have stayed in Europe. From the exterior to the fabulous high ceiling rooms, every detail was fabulous. We enjoyed the chocolate pops left on the bed, a very cute detail. Another pro of the hotel is location, it is far from the noise from Leidesplein, but a tram ride away and walking distance to the museum quarter and vondelpark. Overall, great location, beautiful rooms, and good service.

My husband and I stayed at the College Hotel for my 30th Birthday in mid July. The hotel has wonderful architecture that is quite breathtaking on arrival. After reading reviews I expected the students servicing the hotel to be learners and had expected a less than polished service. This was not the case - we were met with proffessional, well turned out hoteliers. From the friendly check in to the lovely bar man who spoiled us with an array of cocktails. Rooms were small but comfortable and modern. We stayed in the mid tier room on the second floor and enjoyed day dreaming about how the hotel was once used as a college. The hotel is out of the city centre but very accessible by tram (5 or 12) which is easy to use and is a great way to see the city. For those visiting for the first time i recommended jumping on a boat tour, wandering the fantastic canals stopping in the great choice of bars and cafes! I enjoyed this hotel and would return.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 21, 2012

This hotel was our final stop on a tour of Northern Europe. We loved the old architecture of this hotel, and how the contemporary features and lighting complemented it in a warm, inviting way. Our 20- something old daughters were in total agreement. The rooms were quiet and comfortable, the bathrooms were stylish and a good size. We kept having to remember to turn in our large, traditional keys every time we left - a challenge sometimes. Every evening, the staff sent us a treat with bottled water - a nice touch. The front staff was very helpful, arranging transportation, tickets for the museums and directions to local restaurants ( "Le Bouef", was walking distance and perfect).

We liked the Hotel's location- in the museum district. It felt very safe and there was a great little restaurant directly across the street, where the owner serenaded us with his accordion. There was also a contemporary cafe close by that served both lunch and breakfast with good service with an outdoor area that was more affordable than the hotel's restaurant.

The only downside was lunch at the hotel restaurant. The service was unbelievably slow. It took almost 2 hours to have lunch. We watched our waitress attend to other tasks after we kindly requested water. I understand that they are students, but there needed to be someone who was supervising them, so they could learn their trade! Delightful help, but so slow, that we chose other restaurants to eat at. We did have dinner there and it was delicious.

Would we come back? In a heartbeat!

Nice hotel but the hotel staff are all students who are lazy and not suitable for any kind of business.

If they would replace the hotel staff by a professional staff I would definitely recommend this hotel.

Dear Stijnster,

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts about your experience in our hotel. We are happy to receive any form of feedback in order to find critical points in our organization which we can improve.

I understand that the service of our students was not to your satisfaction. I am very sorry for that. As we are a training hotel we do our utmost best to keep the level of service on a high point, which is challanging sometimes. Please may I ask you to provide me some specific examples of the service you was not satisfafied about, so we can take this to our trainings with students? Your specific examples are most welcome.

Thank you in advance.

With warm regards,

This is a restored building in the south Museum district of Amsterdam, about 20 mins by tram from Central Station and 10 mins from Zuid Station. The rooms are well decorated with lovely taupe, brown and red colors...very tastfully done. The bathroom is smallish (Europe!) but the tub was very nice, as was all the hardware. The overall vibe of the hotel is Hip, with soft jazz music, great colors, and people enjoying themselves. Bed was very comfortable and linens were good quality. The down side is the front desk staff were miserable at giving directions...everyone I asked (and I asked 4 at a minimum) gave me different answers, most of which were wrong. It didn't seem that they had a dedicated concierge, so this may be something that they want to add (+ have the local transport companies come and give them a briefing). Dinner was very nice...150 euros for 3 (w/ just 2 glasses of wine). It included several a-muses, which were both tasty and fun. Food and service at dinner were both very good. Lunch was another matter: it took half an hour (I'm not exaggerating) and 3 requests to get menus, and then another 1/2 hour to get our order taken. There were 3 of us, and only 1 place setting was brought, and I had to ask for that. We were on the patio, and it was Queen's Day, so it was crazy...I chalk the lunch experience up to a crazy holiday that they were not prepared for. The setting was lovely, and I would try it again...but just be more insistent. The sandwich was good/fair. Sunshine was fantastic!
Overall the staff were friendly and (attempted) helpful...they just need to get educated and all on the same page. The price was really good for Europe, so I feel as it the value was high, despite a few kinks.
p.s. AVOID traveling in or out of Amsterdam on Queen's Day...trams, taxi, etc are not all running.

Dear travellers,

Thank you for your review. We are delighted to receive your feedback and thank you for the time you took to write this review.

As you know The College Hotel is a teaching hotel established in order to improve the education of the young students of hospitality and tourism educations and to bring new talent to the hospitality industry. Since the opening of The College Hotel have 80 students from several schools in The Netherlands being trained in practical tasks in a real life situation and are schooled in all aspects of the hospitality industry. The students work under the supervision of a team of experienced teachers and hotel professionals.

As well at the reception students are working. We took note of your remark concerning directions at the Front Desk. As of now all students gets adequate training in the surroundings of Amsterdam.

Queensday is the biggist festival in The Netherlands, and crazy at all times. We are happy to be part of this great festival, but this take some challanges with it to survive. We are sorry for the inconvenience concerning your lunch. We hope we are able to welcome you again, and show you the service we provide normally.

Thank you again for your review, and we hope to welcoming you again in the future.

Warm regards,

Excellent location close to the museum quarter and away from the touristy Centrum. The hotel strikes vistors from the outset with clean crisp lines and considered modern interior fittings on top of the period brickwork.

Attentive service from the start, but for the missed room service order of Earl Grey tea one evening (they provided it on second request, complimentary with no charge, but it was 30 minutes late).

The rooms were well appointed, but a little tired. Nothing major, just needs a wee bit of attention here and there to mend small rips in furnishings etc.

That said, some surfaces in the bathroom were dusty - a minor point, but a professional hospitality venue should to ensure the basics are ticked off a checklist every time a room is let.

We ate in the restaurant on Saturday night and found it entirely excellent. Now we're happy in multi Michelin-starred establishments, or with a good takeaway 'fish and chips' meal from one of the local places to us in London, so we like to think we know our food. I could not fault any of the dishes - well seasoned, expertly prepared, and delicate. And the host waiters were very pleased to explain each dish in detail. The Dutch are not necessarily known for delicate eating, but I can confirm the College Hotel restaurant is well worth the visit. You will not be disappointed.

I should also say that the wine list, whilst not broad, provides adequate choice from old and new world vines.

Oh, and the bar feels chic and exclusive, but is at the same time warm and cosy.

Finally, its a great to support the hotel/hospitality students in their studies towards hotel management certification (hence the name of the hotel)

We would happily stay, and eat, and drink at the College Hotel for our next stay in Amsterdam.

Stayed here after a dinner at same hotel. Restaurant is ok but a bit overpriced for the service you get. The location and decoration are well done and create a unique atmosphere. Rooms are very charming and cosy with high ceilings and spacious interior. The bathroom looks different than a normal hotel room and gives a special taste to your stay just as the whole hotel in fact. Would recommend the hotel although have a look if location is near the sites you want to visit.
