“Good hotel, not so great location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 15, 2010

If you check the hotel website, it will tell you NH Museum Quarter is located 1 km from the city centre. When you get there, you will discover it is possible for a city to have more than one city centre! The hotel is actually some 3 km from Dam Square which most people believe is the centre of Amsterdam. Oh, well!
The hotel itself is lovely, cosy and secure. While we are made to wait a bit for our smoking room (we are reminded it was only a request, not a confirmation), the room itself makes up for the delay. It's on the first-floor, overlooks the canal and is quite simply huge (we were upgraded, it seems). The room is well appointed without being luxurious and the bed is very comfortable. The bathroom has nice, large towels and basic amenities. And there is a complimentary tea/coffee service which the staff is happy to replenish.
Getting around by tram in Amsterdam is easy and the stop for nos. 16 and 24 is a street away. The staff is helpful in showing us how to get there, and efficient the next morning in arranging a taxi for us to get to the station. And oh, the complimentary internet is available only in the lobby but irritatingly requires a fresh password every 30 minutes.
Overall, this has been a pleasant stay although we wish they hadn't been quite so imprecise with the location.

Booked at the hotel after long search through Amsterdam hotels and overall pleased with our choice. However it is basic hotel, little bit rundown (carpet stains and wall cracks). When you "get used" to this, positive values come first: location close to center, but not to centered so there is enough space for rooms to be big (enormous for Amsterdam standards), with beautiful huge balcony windows with a nice view to canal. Sitting by the open window - very enjoyable during summer. Reception staff very helpful and friendly.
Stay at this hotel, but as advised everyone else do not book hotels expensive breakfast.

We upgraded to a superior room, and it was: huge, corner room with great view. Good location. Good amenities in the room: iron, ironing board, safe, refrigerator. Front desk staff could have been better, went on and on explaining room rates on check-in late at night. Internet access was bad. Free wireless in the lobby was painfully slow, and only free for 30 minutes, of which many minutes were consumed by signing on. Unsecure access in the room was faster, but overpriced. Room cleanup was a little sloppy. Overall, a great room but I wouldn't stay there again.

We stayed 2 nights here at the end of our European holiday. We stayed at the ibis on the way in and then NH on the way out.... loved it! the location was perfect and we asked for a top floor canal facing room and they gave us a super room with an incredible view with big french-like windows (floor to ceiling), so the view was just amazing. tea and coffee in the room and they have thought of everything you might need - including a laundry room, gym, clothes line in the bathroom and you can ask for a fancy pillow as well to help you sleep better. the breakfast was 24 euro so we skipped it but there are so many cafes in amsterdam plus albert heijn grocery stores so you can always manage with food. walking distance to the Rijks museum and van gogh museum and rent a bike from mac bikes and then just ride around the city (watch out for the trams though)... dont bike too slow or the locals may horn at you.... would def stay here again especially since its a very pretty area.

The hotel is a bit bland but the room was very big and clean, the beds were comfortable and the balcony looking over the canal was a nice surprise. The staff were all very helpful and friendly. Although it is quite a way from Dam Square, the tram stop (nos 16 & 24) is just around the corner and for 2.60 euro you can travel anywhere within the hour as long as you keep registering your ticket on and off the tram. Catch the same tram too and from the main railway station. The hotel is 5 min stroll to the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum - order your entrance tickets online, otherwise you will queue for hours, same goes for the Anne Frank house.

Didn't have breakfast in the hotel but plenty of places to grab a coffee and croissant. In the evening, try the Monte Verde Italian restaurant just over the bridge. Don't be put off by the cheap prices - pizza, pasta, etc only 5 euro - the pizza, salad, tiramisu and Merlot were very good.

I booked this hotel after reading other comments regarding the hotel's close proximity into town when in reality its quite far from Amsterdam's central station and Dam Square. Be prepared to walk a long while or take a tram into town (rent a bike - there are several bike rental shops nearby). It is near the Van Gogh museum and the Rijksmuseum. The hotel itself is nothing special and appears dated. Its across the street from a nice canal and located in an upscale quite neighborhood. Its ideal for large tour groups (one group parked their rather large bus in front of the main entrance) that must smoke because the entire hotel reeks of cigarette smoke. The Continental Airlines crew spent the night here. The rooms are quite large and offer comfortable beds with a selection of different types of pillows (you call for the one that suits you). You'll also find a safe, iron/board, refrigerator, and a hot water pot with instant coffee/tea in the room. The TV did not work, the bathroom had several large strands of hair laying around, and they provide orange scented shampoo -- great shower. My sister in the room next to mine had a balcony which softened the the room's starkness. The entire hotel should offer free wifi throughout the hotel but only gives 30 minute of free wifi in the lobby. Breakfast not included and costs 19 Euros (not worth it - eat at Sara's Pancake House down the street from Ann Frank's House). Staff very friendly and helpful. Note: I didn't see the fitness center.

One of the best hotels I have stayed in recently (business or leisure). This one has spacious rooms good enough for you to jog inside in case you have to ;)

Nightlife in Amsterdam is great in few pockets, one of which hosting hard rock cafe etc. is close enough to walk to. Also the famous Von Gogh museum, Rijksmuseum and the I Amsterdam signage is at a walking distance.

Definitely a pleasing place with good connectivity and close to cultural hubs.
