“A limited yet lovely peek into another world”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 5, 2014

Book an hour tour of the Jan Six House and get a short but specific lesson into the history of Amsterdam and the extraordinary Six family. Rembrandts, glass, tile, and wonderful stories about the house, the art, and the family. We wanted more!

“Wonderfull, best private collection in Amsterdam, but limited access”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 7, 2014

This collection is really a must. It's a collection from one of the older noble/ aristocrat families in The Netherlands. It has it all, in a wonderful mansion. The collection houses a lot of object and paintings from known painters, as you can also read in the other review.

What I would like to add. Is that there is only limited access, only 5000 people a year can visit the collection and it is only open for two hours every week day, because the family is still living here!.

To get a tour you need to sent in a request through their website, which they can refuse without giving an explanation, however I don't think this happens often, only when their only booked for the dates you give. they give tours for groups of max 12 people!.

Still it is worth it (and the tour is for free), I loved the tour and the collection, a must if you are in Amsterdam!.

“This is a "must-see" experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 17, 2013

This is a permanent exhibit of original 17th Century artwork including Rembrandts and other well-known artists, shown in a wonderful 58-room mansion on the Amstel River near Rembrandtplein. The Six family, now in its 11th generation post-Jan, still lives in the upper floors of the house. This is such a unique arrangement--the public exhibition of privately owned art in a private home--that you have to see it. Much of the interiors of the house, floors, ceilings, etc., have been installed in this house but originally were in the Six family's prior home around the corner. Use their website to make a reservation and then call to confirm that morning. The tours last about an hour and are led by a delightful and very knowledgeable young art historian. Highly recommended, and not just for the world-class art on display. No charge for any of this.
